I recently finished re-reading a fantastic book, "Serve God, Save the Planet" by Dr. Matthew Sleeth. In it, this physician and his family completely change their way of life: downsizing to a house that's the size of their former garage, air drying clothes, using less electricity, etc., etc. He talks a lot about his mission work overseas and how we in developed countries directly impact the lives of others, particularly the poor. It's a GREAT read and there are sections for discussion if you use the book in a small group in your church or community. I'm currently in the middle of this book. Very enjoyable.

It is an excellent read, I think for both Christians and not. :)
