View Full Version : Broccoli a stimulant?
DH and I have noticed that when we have broccoli with dinner, we have trouble sleeping that night. I've noticed it a fair number of times. I even stayed up later last night and had alot of trouble falling asleep. The other things in the meal last night were salmon, sweet potatoes. No caffeine in the afternoon or evening. I can't remember exactly what the other meals were composed of, but just remember having trouble falling asleep when broccoli was involved. Curious. Anyone else?

We use broccoli as a home remedy for acid indigestion. It works as well as cabbage for an acid stomach for us. It actually makes me get sleepy. But every body is different so if you have noticed a pattern, that is probably an accurate observation of how your body reacts to it.
Broccoli also has anti-estrogenic properties, which impacts the uptake of magnesium, a mineral that helps with insomnia prevention -

well salmon probably is a stimulant with the omega 3s and so on, those can be stimulating. Broccoli, never noticed.

Interesting that you posted this, Cathy. I FINALLY had some seeds germinate in my backyard of you guessed it - broccoli. First we had 2.5 inches of rain and then a prolonged cold snap with a few nights down to 36F and I thought I'd lost any chance of any seeds germinating but sure enough it warmed up and then the seedlings appeared.
But getting back to the subject, I really do believe that people's systems to some degree are different. What would stimulate you might not me or vice versa. I actually find pasta stimulating and won't eat pasta for dinner - other people I know feel tired after eating pasta. Best I think to listen to what your body is telling you and honor that. Rob
Hi, I'm new here. No problems with broccoli, but collard greens, carrots and parsnips make us bounce off the walls. Whenever we gave the "pot likker" from the greens to the dogs, same thing happened to them.
