first let me say I am not one to "decorate" - I don't watch HGTV, nor spend a lot of time or money on changing things in the house. But, this is about color more than anything else. For many years I have been strictly neutral, earth tone, natural color oriented in the house. Sheets, towels, bath rugs etc, I liked to have in a "natural" or sand color. Walls basically off white, except for the kitchen and I have always liked a yellow kitchen. Then a few months or maybe a year ago I started wanting COLOR! I started small, painted the end of my hallway "Tangerine Dream" which is a very pretty orange. And that seems to be one of the colors I am desiring, along with purple. Oranges, yellows, purples - totally so different that what I have previously wanted. In fact I have even cruised Pinterest for rooms with those colors and "boho" style! Me, who used to want only uncluttered simple neutral rooms, and now THIS! I hope the link works, I am never sure if I get it right or not. http://<img src="http://www.sayulitalife.com/photos/sayulitalife/home/2564/super/casa-mikayla-sayulita-1.jpg" alt="casa-mikayla-sayulita-1.jpg (512×384)"/>

I just downloaded a course from The Great Courses called How Colours Affect you: What Science Reveals. I screened the first session very quickly and colour tells you about your state of mind. Wanting colour is actually very healthy and upbeat. Go and explore with one room and see what you think. You can always paint it back to bland another day. Have fun with it. Or you could try some wild and vivid stencils or wallpaper one wall in bright colours.
Do it and report how it worked out for you.

I loved my college class on the psychology of color. I really do try to use it to create different moods in the house. And that's the fun thing about paint, if you try something and don't like it you can re-do it.

Yay for you, SEL! I like pale colors for walls, esp for the north-facing rooms that get less light. The bathroom is bright yellow and I swear it wakes me up!

I used to like neutrals but now like more color as I get older. I like to do the accent wall with a nice color and then the rest of the walls in a room more neutral. I think this way you get some glamour or pop etc. without being overwhelmed with color. I used to like wallpaper but it is so much harder to change then paint & more expensive once you get sick of it. I think sometimes too we just get sick of stuff we always loved. For years I had the country look & then one day after about 25 years woke up and was sick of it. I took it all to goodwill & started over. It felt so good to do that. Some people do total redecorating every few years which I think is crazy. I find that when I buy stuff I really love-I love it for a long time.

I would love to see your pics! Try posting again - I use photobucket and it's really easy to copy the link and then post it here.
I have been liking colors a lot more too, but I don't like painting, so I'm staying with neutral walls and putting in more colored pillows and blankets and stuff.
I love the bohemian look. I'm using Pinterest a lot these days; I really enjoy it.

I'm a color fanatic, and thank goodness so is DH. I just painted our laundry room a gorgeous aqua blue, and the pantry a pale baby blue, both as backdrop for matte silver shelves, and the new W/D that got delivered today. Our kitchen is currently several shades of green, yellow, and terra cotta, but being painted this summer to be a bit more subtle; sage, deep brown, possibly a pale pale aqua, and taupe.

Every room in our house except my textile studio has lots of color. Our house is pretty nondescript modern build, and we live in Seattle. Lots of grey skies. Our interior rooms are the antidote!

http://www.sayulitalife.com/photos/sayulitalife/home/2564/super/casa-mikayla-sayulita-1.jpg Maybe this will work. There are so many rooms of this type (Boho) and with such beautiful colors. This is a kitchen, but it is just for an idea of the colors and style.

While I love seeing the ideas of colour, I am cringing at the cleaning and dusting to maintain the rooms in the images.
I like my living room and dining area to be neutral with the focus on accents but the other rooms are bright in pink/navy, turquoise, peach and mint green.
It will be fun to see how colourful you decide to go.

Aside from a short stint in a rental the last time we had a white wall in our house was 1991. Color is a wonderful thing. The very best part is that if your taste changes its only paint! You have to be a little careful with that attitude as its led us to some pretty outrageous experiments, but they've all been fun. Its kind of funny, most of our friends consider off white to be a solid color selection. We're definitely the outliers in our little, colorful house with LED lights and food growing everywhere.

Although I love the looks of those rooms I doubt I would be able to have the clutter. I don't like clutter and a friend once said to me "there is an art to clutter". I think she is right, and that is how it looks in these rooms, but I think MY clutter would look just like clutter! So, I think the small touches some of you have mentioned is only as far as I go. I am attaching a couple of pictures, my orange hallway wall I have already mentioned, and the other one is a skirt I found at Goodwill. I split it open and used it first for a curtain in the bathroom and lately have put it over a table. Bright touches. Not enough yet but I am working on it.

O.K. I see the images didn't work again, so maybe I can get them up later.

I also read that a room looks better if you have a few big items for decoration versus a bunch of small ones that look like clutter. I have been doing this & it does look better.

My mother was one who proved "there is an art to clutter." She used to make the most distinctive arrangements out of found items and antique bibelots. There was always something to look at, and she made it work. The wallpaper in the living and dining rooms was deep pink--almost red. She painted the woodwork white. She had a real gift.

I got my insatiable love of color and texture and line and composition from her.

purty pics Sad Eyed Lady but they make my head spin! Just too much stuff, clutter and color for this minimalist :-)!. While I find peace and harmony in an almost bare white-hued room, I do appreciate and enjoy (for a short time) the look of lots of color and texture and "stuff" even if I would find it sort of overwhelming if I had to live in spaces like that. I'd find it even more overwhelming if I had to clean it :-)!

Yay on photo success! Nice pics!
I love the colors and combinations of patterns. It's great to get to a point where you can just throw things together and they actually work.

A good quilter is a master of combining patterns and colors. It's a skill that translates well to interior design.
