View Full Version : Temperpedic Mattrus
A little more than 3 years ago, I asked what you all thought of Temperpedic mattrus. A large percentage said they were the best, wouldn't trade for anything, etc. After much research, we went ahead and spent 3k. I never cared much for it because I always felt hot, but I could live with it. DH loved it. Until now. Long story short, we are going mattrus shopping today. I can't believe we are replacing this after 3 years! Anyone have suggestions?
Am I unreasonable thinking that a mattrus should last years? Our first inexpensive mattrus went almost 20 years!
A sore subject. Literally. We are having the hardest time finding a mattress good for husband's back. That we can both sleep on. Even I who have no back issues am unhappy with our latest mattress (almost 2 years old).
What has changed recently so that your dh now wants to replace it? Maybe with that info, we could try to brainstorm some alternatives...you know, like in the old days (well, today too I guess) when a mattress / box spring sagged one could just slip a piece of plywood between the two and get a few more years use.
Does your current set have any type of warranty - and could your dh's issue be covered?
My mattress is probably 15 years old, and we bought it cheap (frankly it probably "fell off a truck" at $300). It is SO BAD. I sleep on the very edge of it because that's where the last bits of firmness reside. Otherwise, I just roll into DH.
We considered getting a SleepNumber bed, based on our experience at my brother's house. I think if there are two bedmates with different firmness requirements, this is the way to go. Right now, I'd be happy sleeping on the floor--and we are seriously considering an Asian style platform. DH went to China a couple of years ago and he raved about the simple hotel mattress.
We use to have a really high quality futon in a guest room and I wish to everything I still had that futon mattress - so firm and super heavy. I'm considering looking that direction instead of traditional mattresses.

When I replace beds, I'm going to go entirely green, green, crazy green, and get an entirely latex bed. (yea maybe with organic cotton cover) Some beds claim to be latex but are mostly polyurethine so you have to be careful. The true latex ones you mostly order online. I'd get the real thing, that is my dream. *Pricey*. Pricey but honestly the whole bed (matress and box springs) would be less than 3k (though that varies on size of the bed of course) and I hope it's good for the environment (beds are pretty toxic in manufacture). I currently have a wonderful talay latex matress pad on a rock hard bed. The combo works well though, and the bed is pretty new, so no new beds for me anytime soon even if I know what I'm going to do when that day comes. I'm obviously not allergic to latex :) Latex is the OPPOSITE of Temperpedic. It's cool temperature. Ok I don't notice this in summer obviously but when it was cold I had to put a blanket over the matress pad that was already covered with a matress cover and a sheet. It was making me colder.
ANM, I don't know how old this blog post is but it's informative. I recognize the Hastens bed--my BIL used to work at ABC Carpet in NYC, and he still talks about that bed.. it's on his "if I win the lottery" list, as it's VERY pricey.
We had a White Lotus near us, but it closed. I believe there's another one in NJ though. I really like their products, based on my window shopping experiences in the past.

catherine, before we married, DW had a Sleep Number bed. I urge you both to try it before you buy it. She loves it. I never got past the feeling that I was camping out on an air mattress. Like many couples, we have very different Sleep Numbers (mine higher). That adjustability was nice, but the cliff in the middle of the bed where 80 met 30? Not so much. Not comfortable for snuggling, at least for me. Definitely try it the way the two of you would sleep on it.
Our current bed is an innerspring futon mattress on a platform a la IKEA. The mattress come in various levels of firmness and it rests on a set of birch slats which can be adjusted firmer or softer. It works fine for us. And the mattress (replaced it with the same kind) lasts for around 15 years.
Glo, have you thought about a mattress topper made of memory foam or latex or ... ??

Thanks for the advice! We did sleep on it for a couple of nights at my brother's house (he's a "neighbor" of yours, in MN). We liked it, but then again, I think we'd like sleeping in the car compared to our bed.

Have you called the company? Ours is closer to ten years old and still in great shape.

Oh I forgot this resource. This is the ultimate guide to matresses and beds, you won't find a better guide anywhere:

Read the forums and web pages, yea I know forums on matresses, how exciting. But really it's worth it before you spend money.
We bought a Costco foam with tempurpedic type topper. Modest price, awesome comfort. We keep the bedroom cold; my preference is about 45-50 degrees.

I did a secret shop of a mattress store about a year ago here in Phoenix and I was amazed, absolutely amazed, at how much mattresses can cost these days. Wow! Gotta say that I myself bought a second-hand futon for $40 back in 2007 and I swear by it - it is comfortable and seems to give my back the support it needs. I also like that if I want to, I can easily fold it up. I will say though that the same year I bought the futon I was working for a hotel chain and I went down to Tucson and stayed at one of their hotels in Tucson for $25 a night. There was a sleep number bed there and I will admit that was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on. But after two nights I missed my futon anyway.....somehow it's so me. Sorry that I don't have any practical mattress advice to give. Rob

WE absolutely love, love our sleep number bed and have had it for 8 years. They come with a limited 20 year warranty and my Chiro says these are the best beds. I like mine really firm and DH likes it softer. However, we bought a king because everyone who had a queen hated it-probably too small of a bed to have different firmness. Also as Steve mentioned if you cuddle in the middle you are in 2 different firmness positions. There was a time when we cuddled while sleeping but once menopause hit I was too hot anyways:|(
