Sis and I decided to take advantage of the strong housing market and just put our house up for sale. Open house this weekend. YAY. About 6 months after we bought the place my sister's job transferred her too far away to commute (although she tried it for a couple of months) and about 5 months ago she rented a studio apt near her work and now wants a bigger place so figured it's a good time to sell. Not sure what I'll do after we sell but definitely won't buy again for a long time. Just rent - or most likely do a seasonal house rental/travel combo.

I hope it all works out well Spartana! I'm sure you'll be relieved to sell it.

It's the new reality, having a career AND owning your own home in the same area for all of your working life is becoming more and more rare. Hope your sale goes well!

May you have the good fortune of a friend of mine (sold his last two houses in a day for asking price).

No kidding! And they wonder why the Millennials don't want to buy houses. None of the ones at my work seem to, and that's why. Also why I have a long commute at the moment: jobs come and go, but fruit trees are forever. :~)

Anyway, best of luck Spartana!

Thanks all! Well I didn't have a career in this area when we bought the house (bought the place several years after I had took an early retirement) but my sister still works for the same company she has for close to 20 years. It's a huge worldwide government defense contractor and they are constantly closing job sites and laying people off and then re-hiring them at a new location. This is the third time it happened to my sister in the past 3 years. So, like me, she isn't planning on buying another place either and will just rent. Too much squirreliness in her job all the time. She wants to remain free to transfer where ever (or just up and quit) and renting or doing the roommate thing works well for that.

Hi there - Just sold the house (well accepted an offer) so am happy. Have a couple months for escrow, assuming it all goes well, and then I'm free. Of course I have no idea what I'll do next but won't buy again for a while. My sister has gotten a bigger apt near her work so she's settled in and will take most of the furniture and household stuff. So I'll only have to deal with my clothes and a few personal items to pack up and take with me. Oh and the dog too :-)! Now I just have to figure out where I want to go next!

You will have fun deciding where to go so hope that the sale goes through without a hitch.

Welp the house fell out of escrow due to loan problems (UGH!) so will have to start again. Still plan to travel (leaving in a week or 2) but will stay in the USA until house sells. Kind of nice to have a home base to come back to if I want but I think I'd rather have the freedom and money instead :-)! Fortunately sis will be around (doing that wage-slave-labor thing) so she can take care of things and keep an eye on the place while I'm gone

That's to bad. Hopefully with spring coming up it will move fast. Buying and selling a house always seems to be such a pain. I'm hoping nothing pops up in my sale. It seems to be going well, but its not sold till I get a check in my hand. Ive already put some things into storage and we have gotten rid of a lot of stuff. And we have rented a place in Florida, so it would cost me some if something happened to my deal.

Well, that just stinks Spartana. Sorry it fell through. Hopefully it'll show quickly again and you'll have another offer on the table.

Yeah it does stink but we weren't in any hurry to sell anyways but thought it would be a good time to take advantage of the rising housing market. The housing market was booming here last year - mostly investor driven - but things have slacked off a bit now. Not sure why, but there is a definite slow down even though prices are still high. We were probably asking too much for the condition of the house but because we aren't in any hurry (and the house is paid for and is very low cost to keep) we figured we'd test the market with a higher price.
