View Full Version : You guys should quit encouraging me, or.............
I'm going to keep posting various pictures!
I guess when I take a cool pic, I like to share it.
I didn't want to put this under "cool winter birds"......cause this was taken one spring. We had had alot of flooding in our lower property and I guess a number of things died. Well, in the spring when the water receded, nature's clean-up birds showed up. They hung around the yard by the creek for quite a while. I looked out my window one morning and saw this. I was so excited that I could hardly stand still long enough to take a picture.
They are turkey vultures. I love these guys. They are so quiet and well-mannered.
This is one of my favorite shots ever. They were sunning themselves in the early morning.

And here's one I caught flying overhead this past summer.

Cool. I also like turkey vultures - love the way they soar in slow circles overhead.
Isn't it amazing that there are animals who will clean up dead things? Nature surely knows what she's doing!
We had another neat Turkey vulture experience. I can't remember if it was the same summer as when it flooded in the early spring, but for about 2 weeks one summer, many turkey vultures roosted in one of our big spruce trees.
We would usually sit on the deck after dinner, and around 7-8p.m., they would start, one at a time, flying in from different directions and landing in the upper branches of the big spruce tree. It was soooooo neat! We missed them when they left. They must have found a better supply of food elsewhere.
I would love to see that again.
Well, if you keep taking and posting kick-azz pictures...
Not the same thing, but as for animals who will clean up dead things, a few years ago my grandsons were taking a walk at the park and examining ant hills, twigs, squirrel nests and leaves, when I found an owl pellet. They could not wait until we got home, so we took it apart right there and they chose the mouse skull and a couple of long bones to take home.
Since then, they have assembled a nice collection of mouse and rabbit skulls and have found some wonderful stones. However, mom and I draw the line at fresh roadkill.
Nice pictures again Cathy.
LOL Jilly...........oh come on.......what's wrong with fresh roadkill? hahaha
How cool about the owl poop! That's neat that your grandsons are so interested in stuff like that and that you encourage it!
Thanks new2oregon. :)
Turkey Vultures are cool. I see them all the time in early spring as they return from their southern winter migration, sometimes 5 or 6 per streetlight for 10 or 12 streetlights in a row.
They return to Hinckley Ohio on March 15th of each year and thousands of people come to watch them arrive.
Those are amazing pictures, Cathy. Thanks so much for sharing them with us!

Wow Alan.......that's really cool! I didn't even know they migrated.
Sounds similar to the sandhill migration in northern Indiana at the Jasper-Pulaski Game preserve. We went one year and it was awesome. I think they said there were about 35,000 cranes there. They stop over there on their way south in October. There weren't any there when we first got there, and over the next hour, right before dark, they came in from all directions. Really incredible.

Pellets are owl vomit. The compact pellets are whatever the own cannot digest. They are very interesting, no smell, just treasure.
Oh shoot.........I knew that. I don't know what I was thinking. haha
Pretty much the same as honey. :~)
LOL Jilly............I wonder how many people know what honey really is. :~)

Tasty, tasty, bee vomit. :D
LOL..........who knew that could be so yummy?
Also supposed to be why it is so digestible.
