I have never tried this fish before but there was a promotion at a local grocery store so I bought two pieces to try.
What do you think of this fish and what recipe works well?

It's basically just catfish, I avoid it unless wild because Southeast-Asia farmed catfish are believed to be naughty and destructive of wild fish stocks. The local (Vancouver) aquarium has it on its best-to-avoid list. Farmed US catfish are regulated a bit better, buy them if you must have farmed fish.

Yeah, how do they come up with all these new names/varieties for farmed Chinese catfish? Never heard of basa, but the last I had to research (and decided to never buy again) was swai. Basically, same fish, different name.

Never heard of it. I don't buy fish with unfamiliar names.

Never heard of it, but will probably be showing up in stores soon.
Per Bae's advice, we'll avoid it.
I use the Monterey Bay Aquarium's list of fish to eat, you can download a pocket guide here: Seafood Watch (http://www.seafoodwatch.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/download.aspx).

(They have Basa listed as a "Good Alternative." Not best, not horrible.)

Never heard of it.

Ditto. And I think I was confusing it with a fish called Barramundi from Austrialia that I've seen show up lately and claim to be sustainable, which always peaks my interest briefly as I stare at the package and then I never buy it because I'm not sure if it really is sustainable or not.

I don't buy fish with unfamiliar names.

pretty much. because I have to research if they are reasonably sustainable first
