Arthritis and funky finger nails?

I've always had very soft nails. But in the past year, I've developed huge horizontal ridges in a couple nails. I know this can be from a systemic illness, but I'm thinking it has more to do with having alot of finger arthritis. Anyone else?

My mom, in her late 70s, has arthritis in her fingers and has been complaining about weaker than usual nails and ridges in them. I think her ridges run vertically, from tip to cuticle, but I'll check. I'd imagine that the changes in bone under the nail beds might affect the nails. Her fingers are looking pretty deformed. Same as her mothers, and mine will probably be the same too.

I have very large raised vertical ridges but, I am told that is okay...I think you are right the horizontal ridges might mean something
