I am watching the salute to The Beatles and their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show 50 years ago. How strange to know exactly where I was at this exact time 50 years ago tonight. I was sitting on the floor in front of my grandmother's black and white television watching a group I had never heard of sing "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand". The next day we, (as a generation), were not the same. So here's to the Fab Four, The Gear Guys with the hair in their eyes - you rocked us good!

The songs were so HAPPY!! They still make me smile. We had a guy who came to school with his short hair combed down into bangs trying to do the Beatle do and was sent home. This was high school in the 60s.

I remember that 50 years ago in late January, my best friend (who had several older sisters) and I were being driven to school, and I Want to Hold Your Hand came on the radio. I asked about who the artist was, and my friend looked at me and said, "You've NEVER heard of the BEATLES????"

That was the moment that my life changed from being a 12 year old child to being a 12 year old on the brink of puberty with all that entails--getting swept up in music, culture, high emotion.. I watched the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and become madly, madly crazy for them--less than a year later, my father would leave home and they became a surrogate for something/someone to lead me through those years.

The Beatles did't really become a favorite of mine until a few years after their premiere in the states and now their music is a delight. I can remember my folks saying something like, I can't believe they call that music. Not I find my self saying the same thing about some popular music and only have a vague notion of who's who in the Grammys. The Beatles sparked an excitement and musical innovation that I don't think has been equaled since.

Sad Eyed Lady, I just registered for these forums and haven't posted an intro yet -- but I had to respond to your post. As I was watching the same show, I turned to my partner and said, "How strange to know exactly where I was at this exact time 50 years ago tonight." And that was -- sitting on the floor in front of my grandmother's black and white television!
I suppose there were a lot of us -- such is the lot of a boomer!:laff:

I missed the Beatles on Ed Sullivan (I think it was past my bedtime--I was eight) and I remember feeling very left out at school the next day because all the other kids were talking about it.

The Beatles are the only pop band I never get tired of listening to. Not long ago I was trolling YouTube for old videos of the band. There are lots of them, including guest appearances on some rather odd TV shows (one was of them appearing on some Swedish variety show). The thing that always strikes me is how precise they were in performance--they're live, but there's never a note out of place. No gimmicks, just four guys with their instruments playing really well.

Is this where I boast that I met the Fab Four TWICE?

Ditto!!

My first Beatles memory is Love Potion Number 9, at a birthday party. We were 8. Why that was playing I will never know... seems a bit young for the Beatles!

I hate to blow a cherished memory, but that wasn't the Beatles. You're probably thinking of The Searchers.

I was a great fan and got to meet them on a couple of occasions. The first time, my favourite, john Lennon was sleeping on a sofa, i was a bit upset as I had his two books which I wanted him to autograph. Paul McC wrote my name on his own hand and said he'd get JL To sign them when he woke and he'd ensure the books were given to the venue manager to collect later.

How trusting we could be when young..... And the duly signed books were waiting for me the next day along with signed photographs of the other three!

I think I saw them Five or six times live.
