It means nothing to me because of how badly I felt that I was treated there. I did save the frame because it was a nice frame and I might need one in the future.

Do you have time...

I am trying to establish a new routine for myself and I want to read more books and less online stuff (far less doomscrolling).

Do you have time carved out for reading? Or do you just pick up a book here or there? Morning reader? Nighttime?

Rosa, how do you manage to read so many books?

I seem to have trouble allowing myself to sit and read because there's always something else to do and I feel guilty. I know this is dumb thinking. I used to read during my lunchbreak at work, but I don't work anymore and kinda got out of that habit now I'm home all the time.

Hi all,
It's been a long time since I posted. So much has happened over the years. I moved to NC from NH in 2021 for my husband's work which meant selling our little mobile home on the river and moving into an apartment.

I had to start my career over in a new place, where no one knew who I was. Which was challenging as my field is one where jobs are based on reputation.

I lost my mom, my brother and my best friend between 2021 and 2023. This past fall my MIL had to move in with us, which meant moving from a one bedroom apartment to a much larger 2 bed/2bath.

I miss my simple life. I miss my home in the river, kayaking off my lot, growing our vegetables and herbs in the garden and living small. I'm just in a season of life right now where that isn't possible due to our location.

Hope to catch up with you all.

Greetings to everyone on this wonderful forum! I can already see that I will meet so many wonderful people here, and also learn so much.

My name...

Greetings to everyone on this wonderful forum! I can already see that I will meet so many wonderful people here, and also learn so much.

My name is Miloš, I'm 44 years old, I'm from Serbia. I like Minimalism, nature, animals, AI Art, Art Deco, AI music, walks, quality conversations, cooking....

I won't write much about my past, what happened is what happened. The most important thing now is that I found meaning in minimalism, and realized that less is really better. Today's consumerism and the fact that there is so much around us can make us so tired and crazy. I realized that the problem is not in me, but the system is created that way. Well, it is, and the problem is definitely in me, because I fell for all those advertisements and all that other programmed people say and behave.

As for the material side, I've always been kind of modest, or so I think. But, as far as the spiritual aspect is concerned, I was not modest at all. There is a strange and very strong impulse in me, to constantly search for meaning in spirituality, to change one thing after another. I switched to hundreds of spiritual practices, religions, self-help methods, esotericism, occultism...I grabbed a lot. And none of that satisfied me. When I realize when I have been deceived by my greedy mind, I either get depressed, or I change my interest and do something else. That happens very often. I see that your forum has a "Simple Spirituality & Religion" sub-forum. I'm sure I'll learn a lot there and it will help me.

Luckily, I somehow almost got to minimalism. I've heard that term before, but I didn't know what it meant, or at least I knew somewhat. I have also heard the term "social minimalism", when people limit contacts in life, limit their activity on social networks, and adopt pets. That's really nice.

Our current apartment (we've moved several times) is full of excess stuff, like most households. We threw out bags and bags of stuff, but it's still there. I post those redundant and unnecessary things on internet sales sites. I have sold something so far.

I have almost started reading the book “Minimalism: Live a Meaningful Life by Joshua Millburn”. Great book, I recommend it. That's how my minimalist journey began. And it's really wonderful, pleasant, and relieving, because now I no longer compete with others, nor do I want to become something I'm not, nor do I want to fulfill someone else's expectations.

The Straights of Hormuz. Oh dear God,PLEASE tell me this girl is part of the bit. She’s just playing along, right?

It is funny as a bit and simultaneously horrifying if she’s not in on the joke. It’s horrifying because she votes.

edited to add: I’m sorry if those of you without an Instagram account can’t see this. I didn’t think of that. It’s a video clip of a man interviewing a woman during a No Kings protest in the United States. He asked her about the prejudicial nature of our country’s concern with the “Straights of Hormuz” when we show absolutely no regard for the gays of Hormuz.

She responds in agreement that it is wrong and this is part of ongoing discrimination against gays. Isnt it awful! He says, and she agrees with the interviewer that they could bring the gays from Hormuz and set up another Fire Island.

she appears to me to be sincerely participating in this “man on the street” interview while clearly the interviewer is setting her up for a comedy bit.

I have not done an audiobook since listening to cassettes in my car in the nineties. There are a couple of books I would like to try as audio because I want to share them with DH (Townies is one, and Catherine's recent mention is what prompted this post).
What is your source for audiobooks?
How does it work?
Do you actually download the book to your phone?
My library has Hoopla and I think they might also have Libby. Amazon often tells me I have a free Audible credit or trial or something, but I've always ignored them.

okay---i was checking on the price of a pint of Ben-N-Jerry's "Nutty Buddy", which is what got me thinking: What is the formula for being a modern-day hippie? Is it going to the head shop to barter for used vinyl albums or concert tickicks of your best bands(or the most obscure--that might be even cooler)? But yeah---there must be conventions for being unconventional, so let's generate a checklist, here. I see where summa you kids discarded your old clothes---that would seem to be a faux pas; after all, hippies wear old clothes, don't they? so anyway---your turn. Edited to add: Ben and Jerry needta sell their ice cream,(vanilla Fudge, Strawberry Alarm Clock, etc.) in metric increments. Gram, CC. Kilo. etc. It will make their product more authentically hip.

This post is sparked by discussion how to write a thank you upon the death of a loved one….

Not too long ago I was clinically dead for a short while. You hear talk of people having near death experiences where they say they saw their life pass before their eyes or they saw “the light”. My experience(s) were the feeling of an intense “hot flash” starting at my feet and traveling to my head and again intense “hot flash” starting at my chest going upward. I don’t remember anything else. DH commented “so maybe life just ends?”. Or maybe, that is when I came back to life? I am wondering if anyone here has had a near death experience?

My mother comes from an Italian Catholic background. Although she was not a fan of the Catholic church in her adulthood, she did consider herself a Christian. As you probably know, I am an atheist, or even an anti-theist. I would describe my sister as more of an atheist-leaning agnostic.

So here is my question. Many of the people who came to her visitation gave us "spiritual bouquets" or perpetual mass cards. The giver buys a card (for as much as $30!) to enroll Mom in daily prayers by a bunch of monks. Now these cards are less than meaningless to me, and I actually find it a bit annoying that the damned church made money from her death (leave it to the Catholic church). I also understand that the givers did this with love in their hearts, and that the practice is meaningful to them. I know better than to say what I really think, e.g. "so sorry that you wasted your money and helped to support The Evil Empire," but I also am not about to say something totally insincere like "I'm sure Mom is appreciating those prayers up in heaven!" Does it sound OK to thank them for their condolences and just leave it vague like that? I want to acknowledge the caring behind the gesture, without showing that I value the thing itself, if that makes sense.
