Winter coat win

I'm visiting the in-laws in the upper upper midwest, it's very cold here and I decided to buy a winter coat while I'm here.

Did some research and figuring what I wanted is something knee length or longer, attachable hood, and puffy/wind and water resistant. Interior pockets a plus and want it to be comfortable in the 10s-20s. Looking online the price seemed to be in the $200-$300 range.

Saturday we went to a farm supply store and I found coats, found something that was knee length and had everything except the interior pockets. Cost $129, I take it to the counter and it was on sale for 50% off, so I paid $68 after discount and sales tax. This was a great deal and I been wearing it since then and it's the best $68 I ever spent. Took the dog out for a walk at 6am and the coat kept me warm.

Generally not a fan of cold weather, if we move back to the Midwest after husband retires I would buy an ankle length jacket. Glad I have something that will keep me warm for the Midwestern Fall/Mid Atlantic winter.

I can’t see a good reason to move to the cold upon retirement unless you leave during that season. Winter sucks!

I've bought some great winter coats in the past at farm supply stores.

I didn’t mind winter when I lived in Wisconsin. But in 2008 I went back for Xmas and that was my last winter visit. I am no longer used to it being that cold.

Good job on finding that deal on the coat, hana! Having the right winter coat is key in the North.

As for frugal-one and Terri, yes, you do need to re-acclimate if you move to colder climates. I love the winter, and the fall! Last weekend, as we drove over the mountains to get to Stowe, the leaves were absolutely gorgeous, and I was thinking to myself that I could never live anywhere that didn't have 4 seasons. Today was DH's birthday and I bought him snowshoes so we could go snowshoeing together again this winter.

I have lived in the north all my life. Winter is more dangerous as you age. Falls are a big problem as walking outside in winter is a challenge even with the proper gear. A person’s immunity and tolerance to cold also decreases. There is a reason older people flock to warmer climes. I am thankful I am able to go south for the winter. We are not gone yet and may have to rethink leaving sooner in the future. There is no acclimating to this. It is miserable to be constantly cold. It doesn’t help to wrap in layers because something is always exposed.

Happy Birthday to dh! I've always wanted to try snowshoeing... maybe someday.

Catherine, I like to snowshoe too and it’s a quick 30 minutes to the mountains. I also like 4 seasons but our winters are mild. We don’t get much snow in the valley most years but I can look up at the mountain and see it.

Never thought about going to a farm supply store for coats but we have a Tractor Supply store by us and looking at their website, they have a great selection. I will definitely stop in soon as it's getting colder where I live.

Terry, my son recently went with his fiancee to Lake Tahoe to meet her family and he said it was amazingly beautiful.
