Audiobooks - Dumb Questions

I have not done an audiobook since listening to cassettes in my car in the nineties. There are a couple of books I would like to try as audio because I want to share them with DH (Townies is one, and Catherine's recent mention is what prompted this post).
What is your source for audiobooks?
How does it work?
Do you actually download the book to your phone?
My library has Hoopla and I think they might also have Libby. Amazon often tells me I have a free Audible credit or trial or something, but I've always ignored them.

rosa, I have the Audible app. You can download the books from the app, or you can download directly from Amazon, which is super easy. After you buy it it will automatically go to your app. You can either purchase the book or you can use a credit if you go with the subscription model. I have the subscription model. I usually listen to books while I walk and sometimes when going to sleep. Otherwise, I prefer the experience of reading a book.

I have never downloaded a book from a library, so I can't speak to that. Maybe someone else can.

I have downloaded from Hoopla and Libby. But not audio, just e books. It is pretty straightforward with the ebooks.

I have hoopla on my phone, I went to the library and asked for help downloading it and a quick tutorial and I have audobooks.

Check which one your library uses and you can download books on it and then in my primitive car, I connect the phone to the jack and the book plays through the car stereo. Others use bluetooth.

Easy and free from the library. If not sure how to do… just go to or contact library and they’ll help you. I just use their app and look specifically for audio and download so it is on my iPad. Other devices can be downloaded also. Libby and Hoopla

I've downloaded audio books via Libby. I also use an app/website called Chirp.

I read the article you linked, Bae. Thanks. It's very troubling like so many of Amazon's business practices. It sounds like I can accomplish what I want without Audible. My life is not Amazon-free, but I do try to minimize my use of them.
