I second that, can you take a little time off? It sounds grueling.

The increases are worse than I expected. And they’re on top of already existing duties. 34% for China, on top of recent 20% and 25% from 2018.
So sorry things have gotten so much more difficult for both of you, Tradd and TMS! Hugs and hope things improve.
TMS, I agree with the others - your health comes first!!! Do what you need to do for YOU.
Ah, it wasn’t clear.
Thinking of you, Tradd, with every click of the Orange One's pen.
TMS. Can you just shutter the cafe and say sorry, I'm done here? Obviously I have no clue as to your financial investment in the business, though your loyalty is clear. But it seems untenable to me, to be trying to put in new systems, find new help, and look out for the interests of someone who has clearly done you poorly over the years, while managing a dire health situation yourself. I wish you all the best, I truly do. Please, take care of yourself! Sending you all the good vibes I can muster.
Today? OMG.
Today was just freaking insane. I had just gotten done responding to all the emails and phone calls about the reciprocal tariffs going into effect, and had stopped to have something to eat at lunch, when I heard the news. I am spending so much time dealing with questions and notifying customers that I barely have time for anything else.
Just received an email from Rondo, who makes sheeters both we and donut industries use. 20% EU tariff and a 31% Switzerland tariff. This took effect yesterday and any machines not delivered before yesterday are subject to them.
Our last machine was $12k normally and I got lucky and caught them the week they decided to close out that model at $6k. (boss said jump then after the week before wanting me to get one until he found out the price and realized that the abuse and lack of maintenance they put the old ones through, was ridiculous).
This was back when they didn't want me to deal with "their baby". but I took care of most of the other equipment. One main piece we use, average lifespan is 7 years. Basic compressor maintenance, and I obtained a lifespan of 13 years. We had talked about a sinking fund to have money for the eventual replacement of EOL equipment, but evidentially, the idiot gambled that money away.
Health update.
I have been off for a bit now, had to have another person explain it to my manager as she just kept expecting me to work 12+ hour days. She wasn't listening to me, just hearing what she wanted to.
If I was still at home, I would not be eating and probably dead now. As is, I have now been keeping food down, approximately 60% of the time. (chemo nausea).
Today, is the first day in three weeks I feel anywhere near my old self. Otherwise 20 minutes of walking, with a walker, and I need to sleep for hours.
I got called in yesterday morning. Paper out thought all my employee's. No one could figure out how to change the second roll of cash register tape (you wouldn't believe the trains of thought). 30 seconds after arrival I had it done and the flood of stupid questions began (look at the left side, look at the right side, same thing but where exits)
Still need that cook, preferably someone with some common sense and a very minute, mechanical ability (look first, don't be stupid).
Doctor wouldn't give me results and moved the answer stage down the line *good or bad sign, I don't know*.
I have probably two more rounds then another scan. Part of me is hoping for a bad result, as only 40% of people have one side effect from this chemo and other side effects odds, go dowb from there. I am in the 1%, that is having 90% of the side effects. Either the cure IS worse then the disease, or I am dying (in which case we go to pain management) I had been in the middle of estate things, when this chemo kicked my ass. I'd like a couple of weeks without side effects to finish getting affairs in order.
On a positive note, we do have to wait for her surgery, but it appears mom's was caught super early.
Wow, TMS, good acumen and timing on buying the machine when you did, and trying to convince him to set up a sinking fund! Your tariff example is sobering.
IL, that's a great question to Tradd about the tariffs--how do you even know what's real policy, what's a rumor, when it is changing hourly?
TMS, praying for you to get some non-side effect weeks and feel a little better so you can do what you need to do! Hang in there.
Good news on your mom, TMS. Still sending prayers and positive energies to you!
TMS, I'm sorry about your side effects, but happy about your mom. My DD has just had her 3rd round of chemo--it does knock her down, but her appetite has been OK. I make her soups twice a week, thinking that if she doesn't want the solid food in the soup, she can sip the broth. Not sure if I mentioned that she landed in the hospital for 8 days with a chemo-related infection due to her immunocompromised status, but she's OK now. Point being, chemo's a bitch. I'm sorry the side effects are hitting you hard.Continuing to hold you in my thoughts.
Catherine, so sorry she is going through such a rough time with the chemo--I am hoping spring will finally come and all this ill health can be vanquished. There is nothing worse than your child being sick.
TMS, prayers your way and your mom, too.
TMS, I am sending you all best wishes, vibes, and prayer for your strength and comfort.
I am a petty, petty person. OK I admit it. Now with that out-of-the-way…
I’ll be attending 2 conventions this year. The first one is over. As usual, at the registration desk, they shove a bag full of crap at you. Usually, I take out the conference program and my name badge and hand the bag of crap back to the registration desk people because I just don’t want it, it irritates me.
But this time, oh no! The bags were personalized with our names on them. Sigh. So I sucked it up and took home the bag. And this bag will go down in conference history as THE WORST bag o’crap ever.
people actually crafted things for this bag. There’s a crocheted bookmark. Somebody sewed a fabric container for little Kleenex packages. And etc., I was going to count the number of items in the bag, but then I thought why should I spend my time doing that? I need to get over to the Simple Living Forums to register my complaint! Ha ha.
so here’s a picture of it all. It will all go into the trash later today so I don’t have to think about it anymore.
Attachment 6314
Next weekend there’s another convention. They are giving information about where to register and where to “pick up your goodie bag.” Oh joy, another bag full of crap.
I think this obsession with tiny things in a bag is tied to the female sex. I would like to stop in at a convention of engineers and see what’s in their registration packet. I suspect there’s not 42 little bitsy items.
Yep, that’s a lot of crap. Into the trash it would go with me.
Ugh! That is a horrific amount of crap and many people's wasted time when they could be doing something way more useful with that money and time like reading to children, or helping adults with literacy, helping in a food kitchen and on and on...
I’m sick of importers (customers) keeping asking us to commit customs fraud so they play less duty on China stuff. Some of this is on air freight, so departed well after the increases went into effect. You knew what was going on and you still chose to ship it? One customer who didn’t ask for fraud brought in a shipment worth $1.2 million. Total duties and fees were $1.8 million.
And people still actually wonder aloud why prices are increasing. It's mind-blowing. Yet my BIL is still blaming all price increases on Biden and Obama. (Of course he's an idiot)
We're going to just see actual price increases in the next month or two. Retailers and other companies front loaded by bringing in extra inventory. It's a matter of how long that lasts. Imports from China are of course more affected than stuff from other countries. There was also an in transit exemption for shipments that departed from origin BEFORE the reciprocals went into effect. The last of those shipments are now arriving or have arrived.
Deleted everything I typed and simply going to....
Sigh......
happystuff, we are doing a lot of that too. Now I am not even enjoying watching any news.
Happystuff, we are also doing a lot of that. Now I find no enjoyment about watching the "news".
Black fly season has started. I have a hard welt on my neck already.
oh yuck! That is bad.
this reminds me of something I’m happy about: where I live, we can sit on the ground. We don’t have fire ants. Oh certain places have chiggers, but I don’t run into that where I live. Sitting on the grass is lovely. I was talking to someone about weeding our Iris beds and I said hey anymore I just sit on the ground and weed, but she can’t sit because the fire ants attack her
My cup runneth over with humans.
Duringthe last week of April, I went on a 6 day roadtrip that included a bunch of interaction with fellow humans. Then, I came home to be obligated to attend a two day convention. I skipped the part of riding in a bus with 50 people to visit Iris Gardens because I could not face being with that many people and no place to escape. Then I went to the dinner that night because it was a meeting where I had to take notes, as the secretary. So no sooner was that over, then a few days later I chaired a two day Iris show. Lots and lots and lots of interaction with – you got it, humans.
At one point during the Iris show, I went out into the hall and just sat down to get away from all the noise and chaos and the humans.
In 24 hours I’m chairing another Iris show which will involve humans of course. As well as Iris. From there I have a rest from humans for about two weeks before I plunge into June flower shows, garden tours, and road trips that end with seeing humans.
You know, I like you humans well enough, but it’s a little bit too much at the moment.
Too people-y is what I call it.
