okay--here's something interesting. (see photo) Okay----what it is is a small-block Packard crank. But yeah--it was laying inside a parts car I picked up, all rusty. So anyway---i derrusted it and had a machine shop grind the journals .010-.010 us. So, now it can be reused.

okay---I picked up some cores from a guy in Nixa who didn't need them. He's following the crowd with plans to drop an LS motor in his old Chevy. Myself, am an old guy with old school ideas. Among the cores was a 327 block, date coded 1962, and the original heads that are fit for further use. but, theres also a pair of 291 1968 327heads, bare and rusty. The plan is to rebuild them, as they are an upgrade. to derust them, im fist using power tools(drill and dewalt rotary) with wire wheels to start, then a soak in Evaporust. I used some CRC spot check on one of the heads as a preliminary, and will spot check the other one tomorrow. I've got a set of pistons i've had for decades to use in that block, and summa the other vital components. Yup.
okay---bought a set of oem-type stamped steel rocker arms w/grooved pivots and new lock nuts on EBay. They are Crane brand, and came in the Crane box with data sheet. Id say they prolly are 20-30 years old, never used. I plan to use them, then save the box, that has all the Crane logos and graphics on it. Will cover it with clear packing tape to better preserve it. Then, store spare parts in it on a shelf. See----Crane finally quit business prolly 10-15 years ago, after many years as a leading brand of valve train parts. I also tryta save my S-P and TRW boxes, too. Yup.
okay---i got word from his boy that Church Guy is in rapidly declining health. but yeah---i told you kids that he moved ta So. Indianna some time ago, after the demands of mowing got the better of him. He let his boy take over at the ranch, and do the mowing. Also, a guy took over the place across from church guy, and he's a busybody with a loader, clearing the back of the lot that has been wooded for at least 40 years. we don't take kindly ta people clearing trees in the name o' progress. nope.
okay----the past Hollliday Weekend, steada getting out and DRIVE to pile up more miles before they "Trade" (get screwed) like those normal people do, i took my refurbished cheap tool box from the swap meet to the wreckin' yard, because they presently have an old Ford there. Trouble is, just about alla the mom n pop wreckin' yards have closed up, and now there's just the Corporate behemoth based in Callyfornya that owns the nearby wreckin' yard, and the last few years, they've jacked the prices waaaay up. So, i pulled the carburetor offa the Ford, not that i really needed it, i just really, really like that kinda carborater. Yup. Y'ss---it's an Autolite 4100, a very nifty design used by Ford in the late-50's to the um mid to late 60's. Turns out, the one on that particular car had been thru reman, and there was no ID tag on it AND the casting number (1.08) indicates that it's a small-block carb. But yeah--the Ford i pulled it off of has a big block engine. See? But, this is still a plus. Anyway, i about only go ta the wreckin' yard when they are having sale weekends, due to the prices being so high, any more. But yeah--i will place that carb in inventory, and maybe this winter, disassemble, clean and rehaul it. Again---the Autolite 4100 (and also the 2100) are masterpieces of engineering, for the reason that they are very simple and efficient in design, which is unusual these days. They deserve to be saved from the scrapyard. Yup.
okay---made a round-trip ta Strafford ta day. Actually---i's been out there the other day to look at an olld Chevy El Camino the guy is parting out. But yeah, being he's a "pro", i didn't figure there'd be any bargains. So, anyway---long story short, i bought the two doors complete, and the front seat---which was in remarkably good shape, for nearly 50 years old. Plus, a good wheel & tire offa a 90's s10, that was on it. And, a chunk out of the bed floor with a cordless sawzall. But no, I couldn't get everything in my littlebitty teeny-tiny subcompact car that I bought from the wreckin' yard 8 years ago, soooo I'll needta make a return trip tomorrow ta pick up the seat, and the piece of the bed floor. So, have anya you kids beenta Strafford? It is possible, since it's situated on I44. Anyway---i hadn't been collecting G-body El Camino stuff much, lately, but I shoulda been. Got some catching up to do, before they are very, very scarce. Yup. In case you didn't know, an El Camino is configured similar to an old Subbarooo Brat. Now do you see? Actually, one a my El Caminos is a GMC Caballero, and is missing the exterior GMC Caballero badging. Last time they even HAD a cabellero at the wreckin' yard, it had the "caballero" badge in the grille, but when i when back to get it, it was gone. See---it is kinda essential to me that i have the GMC badging on it, because they have license-plate readers and some whippersnapper young cop might say hey---thats a Chevy, not a GMC, not realizing that they made some El Caminos to sell through GMC dealers, and called them Caballeros. Then, pull me over. Could happen. See? Also, being a GMC, it is a deluxe model with power windows, and the door panels and the switches are boogered up, so these El Camino doors have manual roll-up windows and decent door panels and that seat, all the same color as my Caballero. Just trying to get it serviceable and roadworthy; not a concours restoration. Ha.
okay----looked at F-book marketplace at 2 AM, and guess what? A set o' "461" heads came up for sale. They've been reconditioned and upgraded, so yeah---i met up with the seller in the McDees parkin' lot in front of Walmart, this morning. Price was right. These will work for my 327 project, and will allow me to start assembly right away. How do you like that?
okay----i know you kids prolly wish you could get some 461's for your Subbbarrooo or whatever, but alas, they won't fit. Nope. The ones i just picked up are fresh, but the seller days they have 550lb open valve springs, so guess what? i went downta Autozzone, and ordered a set o' Melling VS 110's for like $25, paid up front. Be here next tues. Aldi's is across the street, so IO went in and picked up some essentials, but they were low on catt food. Not good. Anyway, I'm gonna break down these fresh heads & store the hardware in coffee jars, and detail the ports and bowls a bit. How do you like that?
okay---called the car glass guy from romania, and his boy quoted me a paltry $100 for a windshield for a classic El Camino, carry-out, so next day I drove my itty bitty cheap economy car i picked up at the wreckin' yard 8 1/2 years ago downta their shop. The guy said jr quoted too low a price, but i go with it anyway. But how you gonna haul it home in that littlbittycar? Well, i showed him i was right & the glass fit inta my car just fine. See? But yeah----it's still sitting there, because for the last couple days, I been helping out somebody with their 56 Chevy, fixing the wiring to their tailights and also their steering column, which takes skill tho not a masters degree from Hahhhvahhd. Nope.
