I havent tried getting an orchid to bloom. I dont think I could do it.
My rave today is my experience with Amazon. I bought a watch from Amazon.
The last time I bought a watch I had to go to a big box store and take what they had. This time I could choose exactly what I wanted which was the absolute stripped-down model of big face watch.

My family and I went to see the Anthropocene exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario yesterday. It is very well done and presented a unique photographic including videos view of the impact of human activity on our earth.

So thrilled! I'm in San Diego working, and I spoke with DH last night on our nightly on-the-road call. He called me back a few minutes later--I figured he forgot to tell me something. He had just gotten off the phone with our son, who had reported that my DDIL is pregnant!
What makes this particularly exciting is that they had a very difficult time getting pregnant the first time around and had to go to IVF, which worked. But this was a totally unexpected event!! They did the pregnancy test 3 times and couldn't believe it, so she went to the doctor and he confirmed it.
Their son was born only last May, so this baby will be very close in age, much like my 3rd and 4th--(very similar situation--I, too, was taken by surprise).
I'm so happy for them.
That is a wonderful call to get.
Catherine, that's exciting! Congrats to all. My first with with fertility treatments and my 2nd was a bonus!

I got the green light the other day in Occupational Therapy to start picking up my guitar, not necessarily playing it (yeah, right....). And I have been able to do more and more on the jeweler's bench.
About five weeks post-wrist surgery, things have really started really turning around. I have been able to do more and more with my left hand in the last two weeks. Last week I started ditching wearing the splint, as I felt it was impeding me. Now it is all about combating the stiffness in the tendons. The area where she did the cartilage repair at the bumpy part of the wrist bone is still pretty tender and swollen though and I can actually feel the metal plate holding the ulna together as it heals which is kind of weird. I have a nice 5 inch long scar along the outside of the lower arm from the wrist bone bump going upward toward the elbow.
So last night I was able to eke out a fairly weak version of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." I can tell it is going to be awhile before I will be able to manage bar chords. All I know is that being able to do the things I love to do, to do the things that make me tick is making my mood improve quite a lot!

I am sitting in Hermann enjoying our new gas fireplace just installed by DH. It is so easy— turn it on, and it is on. Turn it off, it’s off. Want a fire to warm up for 7 minutes? Done! Need to leave the house suddenly? Turn off the fire, easy peasy.
This gas fireplace world is great!

After the wood fireplaces that we had for years, the gas fireplace is wonderful for just the reasons that you listed. Enjoy!
I guess I’m nostalgic for the old wood burning stove days. But I’m not so far removed to forget the endless task of cutting, splitting and stacking firewood before each winter. In the seventies during the Carter Administration we had the energy crisis and that’s when our gas forced air furnace was switched off and two wood burning stoves were installed. One in the living room fireplace and one in the basement. Keeping those going was a big job. It was messy, dirty work but I did enjoy the crackling of of the wood and the sparks dancing and he licking flames. After a long day hunting in the cold of winter, there was therapy in that arrangement.
Now, I have a deluxe gas fireplace with four lighted ember settings to simulate the coals, five fan settings to blow out the heated air at might discretion and five flame settings as well a a constant pilot, all behind a special radiant glass and inside a jet black metal firebox. I am spoiled. And I like it.

Do any of you remember what that old fireplace spline was called? I am thinking it was similar to Oakum, which is used in plumbing.

I saw my orthopedic surgeon today for the follow-up on the wrist surgery (almost two months ago - dang, time flies!) She is really impressed with the progress I have made; I haven't been playing much guitar because it got aggravated the other day, but I am working away at the jeweler's bench, seven weeks post-op! I am going to go to OT for twelve more visits to work on the stretching and strengthening. The first month was really difficult, but now that I know what it all entails, I'll probably end up getting the other hand done (my dominant hand) at some point but not any time soon. Good news on your medical progress, SiouzQ. It can be discouraging when you're right in the midst of it, but now that it looks like you're on the other side I'm sure it's a relief.
