I read a book years ago by a middle-aged Englishwoman who rode one of those (or something similar) across the US. It sounds sweet indeed.

(Gardenarian--Good for your daughter--as well as having a good head on her shoulders, it sounds like she has a good heart!)

I want one with some type of training wheels on it. They are making those now a lot for baby boomers or other folks with balancing issues. I am NOT the most athletic person in the world but those look fun. Those recumbent bikes also look interesting.

my friend from Burlington was here to visit and she happened to ask what was stressing me out, I explained I felt like I was obsessed with the basement hoard and paralyzed at the same time to do anything about it. She loves to be busy and organize stuff, bring cast-offs to charities. She offered to come for a weekend and help dehoard! My mother is on board and she offered to pay the cleaning lady to help. I am bowled over by this offer and so relieved!

That is such neat news, freshstart! I have helped friends declutter and I also love doing it. One friend had over 125 collared knit shirts. We had a blast decluttering/

That is so cool, Freshstart! I don't know anyone here well enough to have a decluttering buddy (soon, I hope) but I sure could use one.

Having a non-emotionally involved person is a good idea. I hope you can toss stuff because simply rearranging or organizing won't work. In addition, what you think you can give away isn't always possible. Sometimes it is really just trash.

my mother spoke seriously to my dad about what they want to accomplish down there and they decided they wanted to treat it as cleaning out before they die, no holding onto stuff, especially large furniture, that they "might" need. Heaven helping, this is their last place before dying so anything not wanted by me or my brother goes. This is a big turn around in my mother's way of thinking and that she even has goals for this is nothing short of amazing.

I wonder how you can keep her in this frame of mind. And can you get her to agree to not view the stuff in your basement that is leaving? Can she get some temporary medicationto ease her through this?

I fear that she will regress and stop the process, or will use this to make you the bad guy because you dnt want any of the stuff.

Since decluttering is difficult issue for your family, I wouldn't delay. I would do it fast and now, no waiting for friend. Its like ripping off a band aid, do it quick. I am getting rid of stuff, I don't always want to but it is necessary.
