Yes, if we all treated others the way he treats his characters, it would be a wonderful world.

Finished The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store and really enjoyed it. Am now well into a combined volume of All Creatures Great And Small and All Things Bright And Beautiful. Such light, happy reading!
I love love love James Herriot. I still remember riding home on the MetroNorth train from NYC after work reading All Creatures Great and Small. All commuter trains were "quiet cars" back then. The chapter about Mrs. Pumphrey and her dog had me almost passing out trying to stifle all the LOLs. I finally had to close the book. The funniest, most painful book I ever read!
These were my books for March:
- Daughters of Shandung by Eve Chun - this was a good novel about sisters in China during the Cultural Revolution. I think anyone who likes Lisa See's books would like this one.
- The Unseen World by Liz Moore - really good story about a young girl's unusual upbringing by her brilliant father who develops early Alzheimer's Disease.
- More or Less Maddy by Lisa Genova - I've loved all of her books and this one was no exception. Maddy has bipolar disorder. I found the book to be somewhat emotionally exhausting, but I think that is a credit to the author who does such a great job of helping us get inside of Maddy's head.
Rebel Girl by Kathleen Hanna, a memoir from the musician and feminist. It focused mainly on her years in the bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre in the 90s, smaller parts focus on her childhood and college years. It also includes the inspiration for many of the songs she wrote.
Bunny to Beast by Sean Barber. An ordinary rabbit gets caught in a fight between an elf and dwarf and the high level of magic turns the rabbit sentient. The newly sentient bunny now named Sir Fluffington becomes partners with a young druid, Jessica, and they go on adventures. It's a fun read and I may have stayed up past my bedtime reading.
Has anyone read Vigil by George Saunders? Did I see that recommendation here? I read his Lincoln at the Bardo, which was great, so I was thinking of putting Vigil on my list.
Rosa have you read “ A Little Life” by Hanya H…..?
I’m dipping into a bit of it and it’s holding my attention, but I keep wondering if the abuse the character Jude experienced in his childhood is going to be too much.
okay----i am not reading ANY books, since books tend to clutter everything up. Yup. Instead, i spend all my time tidying up and getting rid of ANYTHING i am not using. So yeah---my place looks as if no one lives here, and is move-in ready. How do you kids like that? Ha.
Iris: Please do let us know what you think when you're done. I'll admit that I have Wally Lamb's latest on my TBR list, and I've heard consistently that it is relentlessly depressing, and no happy ending.
I read The River Is Waiting, and though it isn't rainbows and unicorns, I didn't find it unreadable. I wouldn't use the word "enjoyable" but perhaps " thoughtful." I had no problem getting through it and I have put down plenty of books.
Thanks, Kay. That is reassuring and Wally will stay on my list.
