Of all the places to pick in Maryland, they pick this one??!! I had been secretly hoping the trip would get canceled.
So, son texts me yesterday that they were leaving and my heart sank. He has never been to a real big city by himself. He has no street smarts because he doesn't need them here in the boonies. He has no idea what real crime is especially murder, assault, robbery, etc. My heart sank but at least they were staying in a "better" part of Baltimore in a nice hotel. Not the low priced motel with drug dealers and prostitutes like I thought they would be.
Got a text a few hours later saying they hit a snag and were heading home. I was thrilled!! Turns out the girlfriend forgot to mention they were both 20 and the hotel wouldn't rent rooms to people under 21. No hotel would rent a room to two 20 year olds so they had to drive back home.
I was happy I could sleep last night knowing my kid was safe and not getting mugged or worse. I told him all was not lost as they could still go up during the day to visit the aquarium or walk around the harbor but it seems the experience tainted the whole idea of going up there. Baltimore is a daytime only place (and even then it's not completely safe) but even Baltimore residents know not to be out at night in most areas.
