I used to take the “strategic voting” tack, but I’ve come around to the “vote my conscience” philosophy. Our politics will never evolve if we stay obsessed with short-term tribal warfare. I’m willing to take a longer view and support what I believe to be a more intelligent form of governance, even if that puts me in the minority.
I think both the likely major party candidates have demonstrated a certain hostility to the Constitutional order. But I also think we have a system of checks in place that won’t allow tanks to roll down Fifth Avenue or the creation of a Truth Ministry anytime soon. So I’m content to decline the invitation to panic and weigh in on what I’d like to see happen in the longer term.
Although I do think Bae has a point about ranked choice voting. That might serve to take some of the hysteria out of the process. I’d also like to see an end to the current primary system. It doesn’t seem to produce high quality candidates.
