So far? I think Tim Scott.

George seems to be ignoring all of the maga voters. They don’t seem to be interested in a ‘cheerful’ candidate. They seem to want a bully who hates the same people they hate. Trump exuded that hate in spades in 2016 and to a slightly lesser extent in 2020. Now he just hates all the people trying to hold him accountable which is probably not going to inspire much of anyone beyond his hard core base to vote for him.
I also agree that Tim Scott seems like a fun kind of guy.
On another note, I heard that Cornel West is running on the People's Party ticket. Not a bad follow-up to Bernie. I like him.
So as of today, we have:
Former President Trump
Former Vice President Mike Pence
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie
Current North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum
Former South Carolina Governor / UN Ambassador Nikki Haley
South Carolina senator Tim Scott
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis
Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson
Ryan Binkley
Larry Elder
Vivek Ramaswamy
And probably a couple I missed
I can't wait for the debates! Should be very interesting.
The Trump campaign has indicated they may skip the primary debates, as has the Biden campaign.
I pray he will change his mind, get out of politics, try to atone for his behavior, and enjoy golf and grandchildren.
Since it seems that indictment is imminent it's possible that the candidates who have no shot at winning the nomination and seem to only be in it to thwart trump (Christie, Hutchinson, Pence) will be able to slam him hard enough to solidify enough anti-trump sentiment within the party because of the indictments to steer the party away from the circular firing squad mentality that resulted in trump getting the nomination in 2016. The longer it takes before Jack Smith hands down an indictment for espionage the less likely the others will be able to knock him off the republican party leader pedestal.
If they succeed in taking him down it will be interesting to see who gets the nomination after DeSantis falls flat on his face once people outside of florida get to see what a radical he is.
Just checked google news for the first time today. Apparently the indictments were more imminent that I thought...
It’s going to be awkward in the Republican debates when they are asked if they would pardon trump. They can either say yes and lose independents or they can say no and lose trump’s base. Talk about a lose/lose situation…
I wonder what the GOP will campaign on. Seems like usually it's been the economy or some war, neither of which appear too significant these days. Even gas seems slightly acceptable and inflation is relatively tame. No doubt there will be the usual demonizing of the dems and Biden's age. I think Pence mentioned something about entitlement revision, which sort of breaks down to Medicare and social security. Abortion doesn't seem too popular of an issue and there doesn't seem to be much on the table about taking people's guns and ammo away. Maybe defunding the DOJ?
If DeSantis' reaction to the trump federal indictments is any indication it appears that they are going to be running on "defund the police"
Indictments…LOCK HIM UP! LOCK HIM UP!
It's rare that I agree with anything trump has said. But this statement of his from July 2018 is something I can agree with:
"As the head of the executive branch and Commander in Chief, I have a unique, Constitutional responsibility to protect the Nation’s classified information, including by controlling access to it…. More broadly, the issue of [a former executive branch official’s] security clearance raises larger questions about the practice of former officials maintaining access to our Nation’s most sensitive secrets long after their time in Government has ended. Such access is particularly inappropriate when former officials have transitioned into highly partisan positions and seek to use real or perceived access to sensitive information to validate their political attacks. Any access granted to our Nation’s secrets should in furtherance of national, not personal, interests."

Sununu - until he dropped out
I think most voters might take issue with your assertion that “inflation is relatively tame”. I also think the push to move individual college debt to the general tax paying public won’t be all that popular with the general tax paying public. The general laxity of the Democrats concerning crime and our porous border could also be fertile fields to plow. Of course, it would be helpful for Democrats to identify with reparations
I don’t think that things are going so swimmingly under the Democrats that the GOP has no issues to run on. Taking Trump off the board would do wonders.
also, Roger mentions no war being a big deal. I think 75 billion in tax dollars for Ukraine is a pretty big deal, not to mention the threat of nuclear annihilation or even the lesser never ending U.S. involvement at some level.
“ taking Trump off the board “it’s a funny turn of phrase. I fear this court action will inflame his followers, so I prefer my fantasy heart attack scenario. It’s so much cleaner and cheaper for the taxpayers.
I see that Rachel Maddow has suggested that the DOJ should dismiss all charges against Trump in exchange for him dropping out of the Presidential race. I wonder if that hasn't been the goal all along?
I am definitely not in favor of charges being dropped for trump. He deserves to go to prison! I wouldn’t shed a tear if that soulless devil had the big one. I wish the democrats had someone younger that was a viable candidate as I think Biden needs to retire.
The economy is a big issue here as prices are very high. I am definitely against forgiving student loans and talk of reparations is one of the stupidest things I’ve heard in a long time.
I wonder what her rationale was for such an idea. If the evidence is anywhere near as strong as the indictment suggests letting trump off the hook seems like a really bad idea, both from a "we are a nation of laws and no one is above them" standpoint, and from a "don't politicize the DOJ" standpoint. Especially since on the latter point doing this would hand the 2024 election to the republicans. Thankfully the DOJ doesn't take advice from political pundits.
Okay---I am 100% in favor of dropping all trumped-up charges against President Trump, in exchange for the resignation of Raging Maddow. She/He/It Maddfow will then emigrate to Saudi Arrabbia, and be beheaded. Fair enough. All in favor, say aye. Thank Mee.
well, Hillary was certainly let off the hook for her violation of national security with her home server set up and her elimination of thousands of messages, so it’s not like there’s no precedent for it.
I just think it’s interesting that Democrats Rachel Maddow and apparently Joe Biden who must be backing this Trump federal court action, consider him enough of a threat that they want to smear him or eliminate him.
Please do tell us how hillary was sharing state secrets with people they shouldn't be and how she was conspiring to hide the fact that she had stolen stuff. I realize false whataboutism is the current republican talking point but geez, you people need to get out of your bubbles and realize how stupid that talking point sounds.
I don’t understand how deletion of thousands of emails isn’t hiding something. What Hillary did may or may not be more egregious than all of the hiding activity with security documents found in everyone’s bathroom, garage, Corvette, etc. I really don’t know because I don’t know the details but in the overview is all kind of the same thing.
Okay---in case you did not know, espionage is a Capital Offense. End of story. Case Closed. So yeah---Get the rope.Attachment 5523
So what about rice and Powell before her? They all did the same thing except didn’t use IT people that weren’t authorized to do work on classified systems. That was her one and only crime. Not even remotely similar to what trump has been accused of. But by all means continue on with your whataboutism.
I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe they used their personal accounts to conduct the business of their office. If I recall correctly, they were both condemned by the media in a classic case of whataboutism when they admitted to having personal email accounts on their government issued phones regardless of the fact there was no evidence either used those accounts for anything other than personal use.
Sometimes whataboutism applies when discussing a specific case, but not in this one.
Yes. What aboutism applies in this case. Hillary consulted rice on what to do before she set up her server. And followed rice’s advice except that she hired inapproprite IT people. To claim that that somehow compares to stealing documents, refusing to give them back, and disclosing them to people not aithorozed to know about them is absurd.
