What Movies Are You Watching?

We watched Inside Man again. I think I appreciate it more, after watching it a couple times. It has Danzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster.
I have Tea with Mussolini that I want to watch sometime soon. I also watch to rewatch The Cider House Rules. I really liked that the first few times I watched it.
I think I've said this before........but its one nice thing about having a bad memory these days. We can watch things over and over, and always forget how it goes, so it's like watching it
the first time. :laff:

Should we end this thread and just use the 2014 Movies? I didn't see it there. Seems like duplication.

Such a heart-wrenching movie. Heart-wrenching. I watched it once and loved it, and then watched it a couple of years later and had a hard time dealing with it. But great movie for sure.

So, we are on our annual Academy Awards Nominees Marathon as a family. I've seen all of the Best Picture nominations now, except for Her and Dallas Buyers Club which I hope to see before the Oscars.

So my thumbs up/thumbs down:

American Hustle: Entertaining and extremely well-acted. Very much the type of movie to win Best Picture, but overall, I'm not into these types of movies. I recommend for those who like Goodfellas

Captain Phillips: Extremely suspenseful. I thought Tom Hanks did a great job.. Really good movie, but not sure it will win an Oscar. I recommend it for those who like A Perfect Storm

Nebraska: Very simple, but simply good movie. Slow especially in the beginning, but it grows on you. Bruce Dern was GREAT, and so was June Squibb. Was not impressed by Will Forte's acting. I recommend for those who like "Dad"

Philomena: Another movie that's compelling because of the human element. Judi Dench was amazing. However, no chance that it will win the Best Picture Oscar. I recommend for those who like (hmmm, can't think of one...) Maybe for those who liked A Secret Life of Bees

Gravity: You gotta see this on a large screen, HD, and 3D if you can. Very good (mainly) one-person movie. Doubt it will be Best Picture. Recommend it for those who liked Open Water

Oops--two movies I can't weigh in on:

12 Years a Slave: I HATE to admit it, but I watched this at home and snoozed through most of it--not because it was a snoozer. I was just sleepy. So can't weigh on this one. What I saw was really good.

The Wolf of Wall Street: Watched about 20 minutes, and I'm sorry, I know I'm a prude, but I was with my kids and had to turn it off--but truth be told, I would have turned it off even if I were alone-- because it turned ME off first.


Non-Oscar Movie but Should Have Been: Saving Mr. Banks. Come on!! That was the one of best movies I saw this year!! Loved it.

I'm not sure who recommended "Korkoro" on Netflix, streaming, but I would like to thank them for it! GREAT!

I had bad luck with movies for awhile but recently hit several that I liked:

Coraline: This stop-motion movie for children is fairly creepy, being based on a book by Neil Gaiman, but is really well-done. It would be a good Halloween watch if you don't want something really scary, and I liked the strong central character, who has more of a personality than you often find in animated movie heroines.

Whip It: Another movie with a strong young heroine. I was not convinced a movie about roller derby in Texas was going to do a lot for me, but in the end I liked it a lot. It was very warm-hearted, especially in the relationships with her family.

Battleship: This was not nearly as bad as the reviews made me expect--if you like human vs. aliens w. explosions, it was a perfectly respectable entry into that genre (just try to ignore the whole board game connection). It's not going to win any Oscars, but I had a good time with a bowl of popcorn on a Friday night.

what an unruly bunch they are, you tell them and tell them, and still they use an old thread for new posts! haha.

Now I know that I posted about the Danish film The Hunt but can't find it on this thread, so it must have been the other thread. The Hunt was nominated for Best foreign film. I liked it more than all of the American Oscar films I've seen even though many of them were fine. The Hunt is about a man who is accused of child molestation. It's about how his freinds and community treat him during the investigation and afterwards.Mads Mikkelson, who is really growing on me, stars.

edited to add: wait, there isn't a Movies 2014 thread, I think Gardenarian was thinking of the What are your Reading in January 2014? thread.

I watched Cloud Atlas at my daughters insistence. While all the make up was amazing with the different characters going on, I really had a hard time following it and eventually lost interest.

We have Dallas Buyers Club in our queue for this weekend. I am hesitant to watch as it will bring up old memories of taking care of my little brother who died of AIDS during that time. But I am a big fan of our local star, Matt McC and am just too curious not to watch it.
