Fascinating!

Saw "First Man" last night. Well worth the $29 for movie tickets and snacks. It is a must see.
An Inconvenient Sequel.
"Boy Erased" - based on the true story of a teen son of a Christian minister who is sent away to a "conversion therapy" place to try to turn him into a heterosexual.
Pretty brutalizing, and this was 2004 time frame. Excellent acting by Russell Crowe who plays the dad, and wonderful acting as usual by Lucas Hedges.
I saw "The Crimes of Grindelwald." Beautiful cinematography, but the story was basically incomprehensible. I'm very familiar with all the Potter books, and they went way off canon. Jude Law was a good choice for young Dumbledore; I wish there was more of him in the move.
DH and the young adult offspring and I saw Bohemian Rhapsody Saturday evening. We all thought it was amazing. The actor who played Freddie Mercury - Rami Malek - did a superb job of inhabiting his character and showing us his talents, drive and demons. Watch out for the inside joke that Mike Myers says as he plays an exec with EMI. The actor who played Brian May must be related to him - unbelievable resemblance. I would see it again. Now to dig out the old Best of Queen CD...
Saw "Bohemian Rhapsody" on the weekend. I thought it was pretty good, but not "wonderful." Rather entertaining. Now I've got various Queen songs as earworms.
My video choices have been uninspiring for some time now, but I did really enjoy Blackkklansman. Although Hollywood had a hand in enhancing the story, it's the true account of a black cop who infiltrates the KKK in Colorado Springs. A little of the Coen Bros. dark style of humor and a great period soundtrack by the award winning jazz trumpeter, Terence Blanchard. I got it as a DVD from Netflix.
I started the Blackkklansman book but didn't finish it. I'm glad for your sake the movie was better.
Just saw The Hate U Give. Based on the YA novel. Young actress Amandla Stenberg really carries the movie. (Goodreads gives the novel 4.5 stars)
Yeah, I see that showing up in the Goodreads competition for best book of the past ten years. There are some perfectly mediocre books lined up (they skipped The Goldfinch? Crowdsourcing this isnt highlighting best book IMHO.)
I donwloaded the autobiography of the Sociopath. It is fascinatin so far!
ooops, this is on the movie thread. Oh well.
Saw it with my daughter over the weekend, which was fortunate since she could explain some of the more obscure plot points and motivations to me. The whole thing seemed pretty much a setup for a sequel. Johnny Depp chewed the scenery shamelessly and the CGI was almost overpowering.
The kid loved it though. I’m thinking I will be sharing my income with JK Rowling for some time to come. Better the kid to be into that than gaming-obsessed, I guess.
Decided to go high-brow today and see "Ralph Breaks The Internet".Spoiler alert:
When the entire group of Disney Princesses get together and decide to save a big strong man, they're badass.
Saw Nutcracker/Four Realms Saturday afternoon. I knew going in it wasn't the same story as the ballet and that was correct! It was only very loosely based on the usual storyline at the beginning. Only one real ballet scene during the movie (Misty Copeland!) and then again during the credits. It was enjoyable - Morgan Freeman was in it, so there's that. I liked the steampunk-inspired stagecraft.
We watched “Can You .ever Forgive Me?” “with Melissa McCarthy yesterday. It is out in theaters now, has been out for a while. It is about an author who finds a way to generate money from forged literary letters. It was competent but nothing great.
Watched Downsizing on Hulu as I thought it would be about simplifying. In order to avoid ecological catastrophe, humans can decide to become small (about 6") if they wish. What an odd movie!
Honey I Shrunk the ... Species.
Rewatched Alfie with Michael Caine this weekend. It's classified as a comedy and is one of the bleakest, most depressing movies ever. My husband said we should ask the library to reclassify it.
Downsizing was good. It made people instantly rich because their money went farther because everything was so small. We just saw Widows, Robin Hood and I forgot the name of the other one:)). Two movie theaters lowered their prices to $5 to attract people. I think the fancy theaters are getting all the business. I could care less about reclining, drinking and eating during a movie. You also get a reserved seat but it’s expensive.
Won't You Be My Neighbor? :(
Just saw The Cove. Really has me thinking....
TT you got me curious about Diwnsizing. I watched it and liked it.
Y, glad you enjoyed it.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
First Man about the U.S. and the race to the moon. I thought the pacing was good, Ryan Gosling was very good as Neil Armstrong, but especially interesting to me was the sound effects - you could almost feel yourself inside these space capsules with the shaking and the metal rattling and the clicks of the switches and their harnesses. It felt like we sent these guys to the moon in a glorified tin can.
I also liked that they didn't gloss over the real dangers, and clearly showed those early astronauts who died for the mission. Still an incredible scientific achievement.
Mortal Engines
Like the Hobbit, too much CGI and too little heart.
Looking forward to watching Roma this week.
Went to see Bohemian Rhapsody last night. Actually got a little weepy at the end.
DH and I watched Roma. I loved it - he not so much. I thought it really captured a place and time perfectly.
Loved the movie about Queen.
I want to see Bohemian Rhapsody. The only criticism I have heard is that it's a little light--great showcase for Queen songs and great performances but lacking a strong storyline or insight on Freddie Mercury. Do you guys who have seen it agree?
I'm also looking for a review on Leave No Trace.
We are going to see The Favorite today. I can hardly wait for the new movie about Mary Queen of Scots to come out, it will Probably be the best one of the year. This year has been so bleak for good films.
Catherine, no I don’t agree with that assessment of the Queen movie. IL, I also am looking forward to that movie.
The Favourite is delicious! It is a heavily fictionalized portrait of Queen Anne of England and her relationship with the Duchess of Marlborough, and when an interloper charms the Queen, girl fights ensue.
Sets and costumes are great, of course as in any costume drama, but the musical score is cool. The costumes are a bit stylized especially in the last third of the production, so that helps to clue us that this is a comedic presentation of life at Court, it is not straight bio.
