One might be dealing with grief and loneliness while getting rid of your lifelong partner's possessions. It is easy to imagine just tossing it all, but I imagine the actual "going through" all of it might be quite difficult. I recall DH dealing with his Dad's possessions and some of those things still live in a closet since he can't let them go. I still remember finding my Dad's diaries with explicit descriptions of meeting with his lover over the years. Why would he leave that behind?
