It didn't even occur to me that "if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down" would be considered frugal because I've been doing that for decades. But I suppose it is. If I don't have any "brown" that needs flushing I will flush the yellow once a day or so.

jp, do you do anything to manage any odors from only flushing the yellow once a day? That's my one drawback to not flushing, it seems like it could make the toilet/bathroom smell like urine without some way or neutralizing or masking the odor likely to build up over time.Quote:

Re: If it's yellow...we keep a shaker of baking soda in the bathroom and scrub the toilet every few days with that. Nary an odor.
When I clean the coffee pot with vinegar (at least once a month) the vinegar gets dumped into the john, and the bowl brushed. When I bleach small items (dish-rags, handkerchiefs) the bleach water goes into the john, and brush the bowl. When the bowl looks stained, I either bleach it and brush, or scrub it w/baking soda. I've not noticed any odors. If we're having company (a practice I heartily discourage, being non-social, lol...) we flush. Works for us! Water is not the same everywhere, and that may have an impact, I don't know. Our water is marginally hard, and smells limey out of the tap, although we have "city" water.
Maybe I’m oblivious but I’ve not noticed any odors in the bathroom.
I thought that doesn't work with my toilet, it's one of the horrible old LOW FLOW toilets. Last time someone kinda sorta fixed it (as in reality there is no fixing it, just somewhat improving it temporarily), I kind of begged them to install a new toilet. But no luck. So flush it down immediately or else the plunger is a certainty and sometimes even then.
Had a plumber tell us that the inexpensive wire egg-beater looking things are better than plungers for toilet clogs.
