I will say that at one time in my life Portland was the promised land, I was doing my best to get jobs in the Pacific Northwest and I interviewed in Corvallis with an eye getting to Portland eventually. But when I paid my first and only visit to downtown Portland it was… A disappointment. The place lacked architecture of interest.

I heard Stockholm described as having been taken over by violent illegal Muslim immigrants, who were destroying the city and the culture. I had heard there were no-go zones.

I arrived there during the weeks around the 2017 terrorist truck attack, carried out by a Muslim fellow from Uzbekistan. My Airbnb was on the route of the attack.

During the weeks after the attack, I visited the “no-go zones”. They seemed fine, and my daughter and I had a good time. At the same time, US media was continuing to ramp up coverage about just how bad it was, in places I had just had a lovely lunch and chats with locals. Clearly my experienced reality was very different from what the US news was reporting. My impression was that the “uncontrolled violence” was not widespread….

Sweden did seem to be doing all sorts of proactive things to integrate the immigrants into their society. This was evident in all sorts of cultural sites, print and broadcast media, and so on.

I think I may have mentioned this all here in nearly-real-time, back then.

I was very very impressed that in the park adjacent to the horrors of that day, there was a large gathering. Of people from all walks of life. Who were there to thank and support their first responders, who had just had to clean up some rather horrific things. Brought a tear to my eye.

Security was very tight at transport hubs, but in that gentle-yet-firm way the Swedish people have come up with. Reassuring and helpful, not confrontational.

Just watched the evening news (had recorded) and witnessed propaganda about how social security will not be dispursed if the government shuts down Oct 1. Other scare tactic items were mentioned but this caught my attention since it is relative to me and I had just read what the impact of a government shutdown would have on me personally.

Hard to fathom that anyone would want to eliminate or hinder healthcare for millions of people but that is exactly what republicans want to do.

Trump went on a temper tantrum tirade of deepfake video name calling using fowl language posted on X after the shutdown meeting. Not a good sign it will be resolved in the near future.

Are Republicans actually trying to take away healthcare for millions or is the funding in question part of covid era emergency appropriations that Democrats set to expire in the Inflation Reduction Act?

Looks to me like they are trying to take away healthcare. Like many things going on .. it doesn’t make sense. Talk now of closing national parks too.

That's right. That's what the Democrats are trying to use as a bargaining chip to prevent the government shut down. Paul Krugman posted a great chart to show what the financial impact would be on people across different household sizes and incomes.
