We are going to kind of ignore it. I have "Mom Duty" that day, so I'm going to go over and spend time with her like I usually do, and I don't plan to even mention that it's Thanksgiving. DH and I will have dinner later, but we're planning to have ravioli as a main course. The little specialty bakery/pasta shop that we like was not crowded last year the day before Thanksgiving, so we're hoping for the same this year. DH will bake a pie of some sort.
We'll be eating at DS2 house. It's funny. We all have houses that are too small for family dinners (except for my former house that is now DS1's house in NJ). Up here in VT we struggle to find suitable accommodations for dinners exceeding 6 people. But DS2's house is the least small so that's where we're headed. We each bring something as prepared in advance as possible to make it easy on ourselves.
I suppose we will cook a turkey. We are buying one anyway, may or may not cook it on The Day.
Haven't heard anything about family get togethers. B-i-l just had the first step towards dentures, and his mother has been in and out of hospital, so I doubt my sister is doing it. Mom hasn't said a word about anything and there now is a snow prediction. Sounds like I may get to sleep in (first time since Easter), and fry some chicken, that day.
Getting together at a sibling's house. It's always so much fun. And with everyone just bringing one or two sides, appetizers or desserts, there is always way too much food!
Had turkey and all the fixings at a local restaurant Wednesday. It was very good. The “day” may be spent playing cards with friends and just having appetizers.
There are several recipes for assembling “1 pan Thanksgiving dinners” and I think that is a brilliant idea for small households. Here is one:

I liked the contents of this one the best:

Driving to Texas - one more time. Gotta see the grand-twins while I can.
I love one-dish/pan meals! That looks pretty good, IL. Thanks for the link.
okay-----i will prolly have rice n veg'tabals on that day. I don't participate in the Turkey Holocaust, nope. But yeah----alla those IWAH-types load up in the huge consumermobile, get it filled up with gas-o-hol, so they can drive-n-eat and sit-n-watch Iwah VS Iowa State on the boob toob. As if, it's fun to do. Ha. Hope that helps you some.
Thanksgiving will just be a quiet day of the two of us. SO bought the smallest turkey I've ever seen (12.5 lbs) so it shouldn't take forever to cook. Weather's supposed to be good so I'll go for a hike on the "Big Trees" trail before dinner since it's my favorite super local trail (15 minute drive from our house).
I'm taking the whole rest of the week off because I need to use up some PTO so I plan to hit some other trails this week that would be too busy on most weekends. Otherwise the whole week I plan to have a quiet week. Doing an extra shift at the animal shelter on thursday morning since the regular adoption cat volunteer needed the day off.
Extremely fortunate to have been invited to son's and will have a great day; am bringing pies.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
I'm got lucky with an invite to a woman's home who has a reputation as an exceptional cook. Small dinner party and people were asked to bring a list of five of their favorite books to be discussed between courses. I'm not always so lucky and recall the tofurkey alone during covid. That was a dark Thanksgiving.
Good wishes to everyone.
Rogar, that sounds lovely.
Happy Thanksgiving, all!
That sounds like delightful conversation, Rogar! I hope it turns out to be as good as it sounds. I just got home from Mom duty and DH and I will have a quiet dinner at home with ravioli as the main attraction.
Rogar, that does sound great, and the book list is such a good idea for a dinner party!
We ended up staying home snowed in and then lost power, but luckily I cooked the dinner early so by the time we lost power, we were fed.
Power back on about five hours later, which was also lucky.
Thank you, it's par for the course up here that the weather is so unreliable at the holidays.
I was saying to husband if I knew we were going to have to cook dinner, I'd have tried a one pot Thanksgiving crock pot recipe. Maybe I should just plan for it for next year!
As often happens, the kitchen plumbing went awry at DDs house. Her DH is leaving for 3 weeks on biz trip so headed to Home Depot for a new garbage disposal before heading back. Chaos whenever we visit it seems.
I had a nice time with my goddaughter's family. Two hour drive each way. Left at noon, home at 10pm. Had a nap after dinner on one of the choices in the LR (many of us did this) so I was good for the drive home. B
We had a rainy day too, which is welcome after the prolonged drought and so many wildfires around us.
We enjoyed a nice early Thanksgiving celebration with our daughter and grand boys last weekend before leaving town for our annual winter wander about on Tuesday. The holiday itself turned out to be memorable, but not in a good way. We checked into a Corps Of Engineers campground in the middle of nowhere Mississippi on Thursday afternoon and within minutes of pulling into our reserved camping space, I spotted a dead man lying in the grass at the adjoining campsite about 40 yards away. Of course, I didn't realize he was dead right away, I just noticed that someone was laying on the ground in his underwear on a crisp and damp afternoon in late November. Thinking he may be injured or ill I went to investigate and determined that he was deceased right away. Called 911 and spent a couple of hours talking with responding Deputies and Coroner who speculated that he succumbed to alcohol poisoning or possibly just passed out the evening before and froze to death overnight. That speculation was fueled by the deputies finding approximately 15 vodka bottles in his camper, most of them empty.
I've been thinking about this guy ever since, alone on a holiday of thanksgiving, and not surviving it. Makes me want to cherish my family and friends all the more.
Alan, that is a sad image of that guy’s last hours.
Oh man, Alan! That is so sad. Sorry it put a damper on your weekend, but you did what you needed to do.
A young 29-yr-old police officer committed suicide in my hometown marina parking lot. Some poor soul found him in his car. Surely affected his holiday as well. I wasn't even there and it's weighed on me.
okay-----makes me speculate whether that campsite & the trailer are stigmatized, due to that tragic incident. But yeah---15 bottles o' vodka is a lot. Yup. You bet. Prolly, the guys' obituary(if one is published) will euphemistically state that he "Passed away unexpectedly", and leave it at that. But yeah--it demonstrates that you kids needta STAY HOME and take care o' yourself, during these so-called "holodayz", which otherwise are nothing more than consumption, consumption, consumption. See? Hope that helps you some. Thankk Mee.
I'm sorry you had that in your day, Alan. It seems like a sad way to go.
That is so sad, Alan. And you are right - makes me cherish my family all the more!
No, not Chicago.
I was answering LBB's question.
