Dropped off an Amazon return Monday. Dropped off ink cartridges and batteries at Staples recycling. Have a large Christmas tree storage bag all bundled up to go to Goodwill, so that's only .5 purged, lol.
I gave away a very large 36 inch high pot that I’ve used in two large flower show installations. But I’m tired of it, and we have a new enthusiastic woman in the flower show group who is in her initial collecting stage.
It is so nice when those of us in the decluttering/divestiture stage can connect with those in the collecting/accumulation stage.
Sister and I went though Mom's bathroom cabinets yesterday. We filled a bag for the trash, but also took away some items to keep or donate. Mom's house has a ton of bathroom storage, and of course it was all totally crammed with stuff at one point. We now have it pruned down to things she actually needs at this point in her life, and things we haven't quite figured out what to do with. For example, the woman has what is probably the largest private collection of tweezers in the country. She has many partially full bottles of her once beloved Zen perfume. The Zen actually has some value on eBay, but might be more trouble than it's worth. Maybe we should start spritzing her with it for her remaining days.
I have noted the fact that Mom's house has loads of storage space, unlike my own house. For example, her bathroom had all the storage beneath a very large double vanity, perhaps 6' long, then another equally long, horizonal medicine cabinet, as well as an adjacent linen closet that is a generous size.
I have no vanity at all, a small, standard medicine cabinet, and no linen closet. We manage to get by just fine with what we have.
Of course I sometimes wish that I had a bit more storage space, but bottom line is that more store space = ability to amass more stuff.
I totally agree. I think there are some who feel that "empty space" needs to be filled - with anything, sometimes! LOL. I've been decluttering this house for over 15 years and STILL have a ways to go before I am happy/comfortable. Also another reason I want a smaller place!
Empty space must be filled? Oh yeah. I live with that guy.
meanwhile, empty space in my kitchen drawers makes me unreasonably happy.
IL, Happy Stuff and Rosa- Yes, I get it. I love looking in a nearly bare closet...hasn't happened too often lately! Right now I will be content to empty my surfaces nest to the computer...and the dining room table again. Our kitchen table is currently filled with a 1000 piece puzzle in progress. It is fun, so I don't mind that, but I realized how much I use that table to park things.
Right now I am working on files for taxes...grinding my teeth and wishing they would just take 20% and not make us produce reams of paper! Next is Death files...trying to get them set so if we die accounts can be accessed. Not easy when I find myself saying dreadful things every time I sign on to something and have to get the "security code" sent to my phone after I have used my password. This should go in the rant page, but I'm calling it decluttering.
Decluttered two pieces of Valentine's Day decor. Lived with it for about a week and a half and just didn't like it. Also got rid of three bottle brush trees. Much prefer the look of the mantle with less of them on it.
In my continuing saga of Lego organizing/storing/selling, I feel like I kicked butt this past week with the actual organizing part. Have Legos sorted by color and stored in ziplock bags. All the bins and containers they were formerly in went to sibling game night last night. All my crafting siblings took all but 3 bins! Those will probably be used to put donations in at my next donation pickup. I've reclaimed part of my living room again!!! LOL.
Good progress, Happy!
Sister and I decluttered a couple of boxes of stuff from Mom's house yesterday.
Just sold a smaller cast iron tub on Marketplace. It's been sitting in my side yard for MANY years! YAY!
Decluttered a Valentine's Day table runner. I took it off our coffee table because one of the cats kept messing it up whenever he would lay on the table. I got tired of fixing it. Ended up liking it without the runner so it's gone.
This week I gave away via FB:
Heated mattress pad from Mom's house
Unopened Colace supplement from Mom's house
Two water pitcher filters that a friend gave us, but are not compatible with our pitchers
Partially used calcium supplements from our house
One person needed a nudge, but overall the pickups went smoothly.
I'm sure it's faster and easier to just donate things, but I also know the thrift stores get more stuff than they can handle. I figure as long as I have the time and inclination, it is better to get things directly into the hands of people who actually want them; there is less risk of them ending up in the trash. Plus I would not be able to donate supplements, especially opened ones.
I also recently culled a bunch of pottery from the boxes in the cellar, and my sister took it all and gave it away in her condo building. The pottery boxes in the basement stress me out a bit when it feels like the collection is just growing.
How do you approach decluttering health and beauty stuff - lotions, makeup, shampoo, supplements etc. that you purchased and then decided you don't like or need?
Yes, me too. Either it’s good enough to go to Goodwill or it goes in the trash because I do try to not load up Goodwill with tons of crap. I shopped there regularly and I don’t want to see crap when I go there.
That said, our house cleaner has taken a few things off my hands, foodstuffs and a clothing rack.
I have two or three pieces of furniture coming up that I will take to the auction house and we might get a few bucks for them.
The auctioneer Has an antique store and he’ll keep whatever he doesn’t sell for us at auction, by that I mean, we will donate it to him.
okay----i added to my clutter, and am proud of it. But yeah---a guy about 35-40 was decluttering his and his late fathers home shop tools. They hadn't been used in awhile, either. He made me a real good deal on some power tools i can definitely use, but not enough to justify purchasing new. Nope. Anyway---he said he was selling everything he owned, so his wife could take a new job in Spain. In Europe. Many 1000's of kilometers away. He sure was no Tom Selleck or Brad Pitt or Jack Kennedy, but as i started to leave she appeared, and i concluded that he would probably have a very hard time replacing her AND the kids, if he didn't march in lockstep with Mama's plan. For a gal that age, she was a honey, looks-wise. Yup. But yeah--i've got to find a spot for these tools, pretty quick. Hope that helps you kids.
I guess it depend on the item. If it's something that comes in contact with my body, e.g. lip balm, roll-on deodorant, I would toss it. But partial bottles of supplements or shampoos, lotions etc. are often offered on FB and people respond enthusiastically. The woman who took my Caltrate said she was grateful because she had to take it every day. What she got from me was worth between $20 - $30. so I saved her some money.
Unopened can be taken to the VA hospitals or women’s shelters.
