https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/26/h...smid=url-shareEvery year since 1988, the United States has marked Dec. 1 as World AIDS Day, when people mourn those who died of the disease, honor efforts to contain the epidemic and raise awareness among the general public.
Not this year.
The State Department this month instructed employees and grantees not to use funds from the United States government to commemorate the day. The directive is part of a broader policy “to refrain from messaging on any commemorative days, including World AIDS Day,” according to an email viewed by The New York Times.
Just theoretically, how many years do we have to have a “day of the disease” past the stage when we truly need to raise awareness for an emergency epidemic? HIV was a terrible disease for the LGB world (actually, L + B and then some Cis persons. Lesbians woild say “leave us out of this!” ) and it took a while for real recognition to take place of that. But it’s been under reasonable control for many years.
When is our “day of Bubonic Plague?” There are still cases reported every year.

I looked up some statistics on AIDS and found that as of 2022, 13% of the people in the US who are infected with AIDS don't know they are infected with AIDS. So I can see the point of awareness campaigns.
