The Post Gazette out of Pittsburg will cease publications May 3. It first paper was published in 1786. As quaint as they might be, a small town paper is nice and not in the digital realm as are emails. My luddite opinion. I can imagine you see the editor or others with the paper in the stores or otherwise around town. They could be new friends?

We do know the editor/ owner’s first name because she writes a column that’s fairly lame, but she’s a nice person.

small town papers are valuable and that’s why we pay money to subscribe to the print version of it. We really do enjoy the newspaper, and they got rid of the worst writer. Before that there was a really good writer who wrote an unbelievable number of copy inches each week. I can’t even imagine the number of hours that guy put in.

Their current reporters, two of them, are decent.

and then, there is the small town newspaper convention of “write your own article” where we could submit most any article about any community organizations or events, and they will publish it. That is nice.

I'm trying to think of a corollary here in Burlington. We have a couple of hometown newspapers. The main shopping area is on Church Street. The news keeps close tabs on openings and closures there because, frankly, the lovely pedestrian outdoor "mall" has seen some tough times, brought on by increased internet shopping, COVID, and lately, lack of management of homeless and addicted loiterers.

Here is an article that nicely summarizes news about Church Street businesses. (There may be a paywall...) https://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/...n/86669775007/

I skimmed the article because I’ve learned how to drop a URL into payroll remover sites. This Burlington article gives the address of business they’re writing about. it’s either under the photograph or at the end of the article, either convention works for me.

Yes, I think it's very supportive of both the businesses and the people who might be interested.

We subscribed to our local print paper until it went out of business. Now we read a free local paper that is pretty decent.

We don't have any around my area as far as I know. The free paper disappeared about a year ago. I think it was the last to go.

It is Pittsburgh, Post Gazette. Growing up we had 2 newspapers each day, Pittsburgh Press and the Post Gazette. Haven't lived there since the 60s. Sorry to hear the loss of another newspaper. Here in Frederick, MD it was the same, Frederick News and Frederick Post but now just the Frederick News Post (Maryland).

I always get the spelling wrong and have been chastised for. Yes, ...gH. My home town of 100,000 had a morning and evening paper. I had friends and relatives who were paper boys, administrators and on the production lines. They still have a small paper owned by some media giant and I read it mostly for the obituaries, as not much else is worthwhile. I was told big Denver Post offered a special one year subscription for a penny. I don't know if there was a catch? I suspect society may have been better off only getting the recent news once or twice a day. People can go down the doom scrolling aisle fairly easily now.

Well surprise! Our town newspaper went to brief tabloid style print form. I kinda like it. It has greatly reduced content. I’m sure they are struggling financially since another county newspaper moved in to cover this area.
