We had Mom and Sis over for dinner. Sis and I went to Mom's house and got her up and ready and brought her to my house where DH was manning the kitchen. Sis is a vegetarian, Mom doesn't know what day it is and Rosa doesn't particularly love turkey, so we had a non-traditional Italian pasta dinner with a few desserts. Mom was decidedly non-perky and asked more than once if she was dead yet or why she couldn't just lie down on the floor and die.
I'm sure I will horrify some when I say my gratitude cup would have really overflowed if Mom had died during the dessert course. Oh well, can't have everything. Poor Mom does not deserve this hellish existence.

So sorry you are having to deal with this, rosa. It is wonderful to have Mom at another Thanksgiving table, but I totally understand that sometimes you wish the best for the other person, even if the "best" represents the pain of loss and grief for you. I saw that in my MIL in her last year... she just seemed to have run out of life.

And on the flip side, I got a text from my brother #2 early Thanksgiving morning that my brother #1 (whom we visited in August because he has been suffering from a myriad of health conditions, including multiple small strokes and congestive heart failure) is in the hospital. My SIL says that "multiple doctors are throwing darts at the wall" So, on Thanksgiving, I had my cell phone on the table beside me in case I got terrible news. I wish an angel could come down and wipe away all this crappy medical stuff and make him "hale and hearty" again. So in terms of thanks, I'm grateful for my relationship with my brother and for his goodness that he has shared with me, but I did pray this morning during meditation to God/Creator/Universe "Thy will be done."

Really resonate with both of these--at the end I was just praying that "they be okay" whatever okay meant, at peace, and that God keep them close and alleviate their suffering.

I'm so sorry that your brother is doing poorly, Catherine. That's good that you got to spend time with him during the summer.

I'm so sorry for all the trials and tribulations some folks are going through. Hugs to all.

Have the "free" turkey from the grocery store in the oven and several leftovers from Thanksgiving dinner in the fridge. Should be a good dinner and nice stock of the freezer by the end of the day!

Okay---what did I have, yesterday? Hmm. Oh, yeah--summa those ready-made burritos. Heat-n-serve. They cause me gastric disturbances, but I'm fine.

Chicos del horno stew. A traditional New Mexico dish made with dried and roasted sweet corn. A few supermarkets around here actually carry chicos.

Thankfully my thanksgiving didn't involve dealing with loved ones struggling to survive another day. I'm lucky that that has never been my reality. The struggle days have just been random days during the year. My heart reaches out to Rosa and Catherine and I hope that your loved ones are able to find peace.

Today's dinner was a lasagna using eggplant as the noodles. It was quite tasty and low carb as is everything I make these days to deal with my diabetic issues. The recipe recommended not freezing the leftovers so I guess I will be eating it for the next couple of days...

Fresh asparagus with hollandaise sauce. I put too much lemon in the hollandaise, but otherwise it was great.
