    Treasury bills

Does anyone else buy t-bills? My favorite financial guru, Terry Savage, talks about they’re a great way to get some safe gains on your chicken money.

I decided to try it with $500 ($100 min) in a 4 week t-bill and roll it over two times. The rate is much better than my standard Chase savings account and Vanguars requires $3K minimum for a money market fund. It was super easy setting up the account. I want to buy a new car within the next year and figured this would be a no-brainer to save up a bit extra.

I need to do this. Are you sure it was super easy to set up? It looked a little confusing but I will try.

Yes, very easy. There’s a video on Terry Savage’s website and also a how to on the Treasury Direct website. The only issue I ran into is that the website doesn’t allow “-“ hyphens as part of password and Safari on my iPad always includes those for passwords it creates. I just replaced the hyphens with something else.

I use Treasury Direct for a 12 month T Bill, which is one rung in my ladder including the T Bill and 3 12-month CDs. I like to spread my business around, but I believe my return would be a little higher if I left out bank and credit union CDs and concentrated solely on T Bills. In a rising interest rate environment, each time a rung renews for a further 12 months, I have found that the APY has increased.
