    Crazy Hailstorm Yesterday

This storm blew in quickly from the southwest; as soon as I saw the dark clouds gathering over the Ortiz Mountains just to the south of our house, I ran and got my phone to get some photos. As we were standing the porch, suddenly these really loud pings started ricocheting off the metal porch roof and it was SO LOUD. One of the ice balls hit my cheek and it actually hurt.

It was the most intense hailstorm I've ever seen here. Usually the hail is pea-sized, but this storm had large marble sized bits and some at least an inch in diameter. Both of our cars have little dents all over the roofs and hoods. It could have been a lot worse though. Some neighbors had broken windows, and one friend's greenhouse roof got smashed in.

Links didn't work for me either. I don't think I've ever been in a hailstorm before. I guess where I live, they are not prevalent.

Hailstorms are very rare in Indianapolis. I can remember two horrible ones though in 40 years. One took out loads of cars, windows, and roofs in a general area. The other had huge hail stones and was localized to an area on the SE side and took out roofs, siding!! !and most anything else. Could not believe the damage.

We were hiking in Alaska and thankfully just missed being outside (not many trees) for a long intense hailstorm. It left large piles of hailstones that had slid off the lodge roof.

Very common here on the Front Range but up until last year, we escaped any severe ones. Just had the roof replaced due to one a year ago. They seem to be coming more frequently in unexpected places.

I got news today from a friend not too far away who got hit a couple of weeks ago. It seems like those little pockets of large damaging hail are more common. He said it came without much warning in the late evening. He had one car parked outside and said it now matches their other car that got hit last time. I can picture homeowners insurance becoming more expensive, but at least it's not like Florida or California.

I've only seen hail twice, and it was little, cute, harmless hail.

I remember one year I went over to my spare garden about a mile from my house and my plants looked weird. There had been a hailstorm there, but not at my house a mile away.

we have a heavy metal roof which I don’t think is damaged by hail. Our siding is Hardee-board type so it doesn’t get marked by hail like vinyl can.
