    Reagan

I’m planning on seeing the new Reagan biopic this weekend. From what I’m reading it finished third at the box office over the holiday weekend, but the usual media chatterers are panning it. Probably to be expected.

I understand the film focuses on the endgame of the Cold War.

I like Dennis Quaid and think that is interesting casting.

Let us inow what you think.

For me, I can’t think of a film to get me back into theaters.

With an increasingly high rate of Covid in my community, and the fact that our quite-nice village movie theater is usually completely packed (1-2 showings a week of a single film), I’m not popping my head in for a while, when I can live a few months behind real time, and watch films in my quite-nice home theater, with far less expensive refreshments, and the ability to pause the film as-needed.

About pausing the film when needed, that is exactly why I miss going to theaters. That experience required me to be immersed in the film. The dark theater. The inability to put it on pause. The lack of distractions from my dog, my cats, etc.

My experience of film has suffered from watching it in the comfort of my own home. It has to be a very strong production anymore that keeps me mesmerized. Conversely, in the theater, I could get into a film that was more mediocre.

Recently, I finished season one of Deadwood, the television production by David Milch, watching it for a second time after a dozen years. The closing episode of season one was incredibly strong, better than any film or at least equal to any film of the past few years. It was full of passion and historical interest.

I was just thinking about Deadwood the other day, wondering if it were streaming somewhere. I loved that series, compelling characters, good story lines, stunning visuals and the best damn dialog I can recall of any series outside of Lonesome Dove.

It is amazing. I remember you first introduced me to it. It deserves its place in the top five television dramas of all times.

Sopranos. The wire. Deadwood. … and add whatever other two you like. For me, it’s The Shield and Succession to round out the top five dramas.

    Deadwood is streaming via Max.

today on the Deadwood sub Reddit someone posted an old photo of men at a bar with a reputed Al Swearingen standing behind the bar. It is creepy how much he looks like Ian McShane.

Sol Star is supposed to be buried in St. Louis, but I haven’t found his name in FindaGrave. I read that his sister lived in my old neighborhood at one time.
