The first couple years it was legal here in Washington, I responded to lots of 911 calls, primarily from tourists, who had panicked because they had “overdosed”, usually on edibles. None had any significant medical issues, they were just stoned out of their gourds and highly anxious about it.

I was a regular consumer when I was younger and gave it up at about age 25, because I realized that I just didn't really like the way it made me feel, plus it was getting quite expensive.
DH is a regular daily user and has been since his teen years. He has his medical card. He's been shifting a bit more to edibles and vaping because the smoking is taking it's toll on his lungs. We both quit cigarettes almost 13 years ago. I never cough and choke or struggle to breathe, but it's a different story for him because he is still smoking even if not tobacco. Interestingly, I score worse than him on pulmonary function tests, but I feel much better subjectively. I would like to see him switch completely to edibles (if he needs to keep using the stuff), but thus far, he's not willing to do that. He does have a lot of chronic pain going on, so I suppose the cannabis is better than some other options.
I take a 5 mg gummy to help with sleeping.
Catherine, I had a similar experience with a brownie. His sister made a batch and gave some to him. I did not realize they were "special," and I ate one. I commented to DH that it tasted pretty awful, especially given that SIL is a good cook. He was incredulous that I had eaten one. It hit me pretty quickly and it was a crappy feeling, like I was very drunk. I went and sort of napped for an hour two, and then I was fine. It was a really horrible feeling when I realized I had ingested something I didn't want to ingest, and there wasn't really much I could do except ride it out. I felt somehow violated.
IL, that's interesting that the dispensary in your area closed due to lack of business. They are popping up like mushrooms around here, and I've yet to hear of one closing.

that would have been me, had DH not come home in time and had I called 911.

When I was young and would smoke pot - even a little, it would just put me to sleep. These days, I enjoy my wine.

That's why I never liked it. I'm introverted as it is, and if we were at a cool 60's happening and I took a couple of tokes, well, I wasn't happening. I was fading into the metallic wallpaper.

I live in a state where cannabis is illegal. A couple of months ago, I was driving through a bordering state where it is, and noticed one place advertising their “back to school” sale. I’m now convinced it will eventually mainstream everywhere.

It was a head-turner for me to see a cannabis booth at the farmer's market.

I am told my city is very conservative for the state even though pot is legal. They are trying to keep recreational pot out by not permitting any shops within one mile of a school - so obviously there won't be any. DH was a partaker many years ago but says the stuff now is much, much stronger. I never liked the stuff after eating a brownie that might as well have been LSD. Even my wine intake now is pretty limited though I would like to be done with it altogether.

I’ve tried smoking it exactly twice. Both times when I was in college. Both times were not particularly enjoyable. I felt nothing. My friends said I was completely zoned out for two hours. And both times gave me laryngitis for a day after. So I won’t be trying that again.

I am, however, interested in the ‘makes you sleep’ aspect of it. I sometimes wake up at 3 or 4 am after about six hours. When that happens I tend to be awake for at least 2 hours so this would be helpful. But not if I then sleep another six hours. Does anyone have enough experience to know what I’d likely experience? We don’t have any dispensaries in the north bay. I think Oakland is the closest so it’d be a project for me to actually acquire some edibles for this…

A former work mate that I see every so often has described your sleep disruption. He grows plants in his enclosed yard and makes his own gummies. His claim is that instead of a couple of hours or more he will fall back asleep in a half hour or so with one gummy. His mother is in her 90's and has trouble sleeping for what ever reason some of which has to do with chronic pain. She takes one of his gummies before bedtime and thinks it helps. He has talked with her doctor about this and the claim is that it is a better choice than sleeping pills. Another woman I know says she had a run on of random thoughts and couldn't sleep at all.

I think whether it leaves you drowsy in the morning or tend to sleep too long or even helps is up to your unique tolerances. I have tried CBD in a couple of forms, which supposedly doesn't have the mental distortions but helps with sleep, and it did nothing for me and was a waste of money.
