    Oscar films 2025

What a sad lot continuing earlier years of sad offerings.

I just finished “the substance “a body double horror film with Demi Moore. It is stupid.

Yesterday I watched “a real pain “a nice but forgettable little film about two cousins who go to Poland on a tour of Jewish Heritage after their grandmother dies. I mainly wanted to see Kieran Culkin perform and he did a nice job. He’s nominated for an Academy award.

I was going to watch “Emilia Perez” but today I learned it’s a damn musical. I don’t do musicals. “Wicked” is also nominated, but I’ve managed to stay far far away from that production for more than a decade and I’m not going to change now.

“The Brutalist” could maybe be entertaining, but I heard it’s 3.5 hours.? Is that right? Could it really be that long? And then I read a review that termed it mediocre so… I don’t know. it’s about an architect who comes to the United States from Europe, to make his fortune.

I don’t want to see the Bob Dylan biopic since I don’t like those generally because they seem to be focusing on imitation of the subject.

I have some interest in seeing “The apprentice “which is a film not nominated for best picture, but Jeremy Strong is nominated as best supporting actor and I love Jeremy. it is a biopic about Donald Trump, not my favorite thing as mentioned.

what have you seen from this Oscar crop?

I'm interested in seeing The Brutalist because I've read very good things about the production and Adrien Brody's performance. I was so impressed with him in The Pianist and he was so young when he did that and got Best Actor for it.

I don't know that I could describe it as "entertaining" though. He is raped and becomes a heroin addict in the course of seeking the American Dream.
My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far today, I have finished two bags of M&Ms and a chocolate cake. I feel better already!

Yeah, I agree I'm not excited about the Oscars, but I haven't seen many of the nominated films. Only two in the best picture category: The Substance and Conclave. I liked the overall premise of The Substance--it reminded me a little of the 90s movie Death Becomes Her which was a much more entertaining story about aging in Hollywood. I thought The Substance went over the top at the end and it did become stupid.

I also saw Conclave, which I could relate to on the level of having grown up Catholic. But it's also a movie about intrigue, politics, and ambition, so anyone could enjoy it. I agree that Ralph Fiennes deserved a nomination, but I'm not sure about the movie. It was good, but not THAT good.

I promised my granddauther that I'd take her to see Wicked. She's already seen it but wants to see it again, so I guess she would vote for that one to win. I've never seen the musical Wicket, although I'm familiar with much of the music.

I'm quasi-interested in The Brutalist, but I tend to shy away from these ridiculously long movies these days, espeically if it's a dark one, as The Brutalist seems to be. However, if I can shamelessly name-drop, when my son was 7 years old, and Brody was about 19, my son worked with him and he was SO nice.

I watched The Golden Globes from start to finish, so I might do the same with the Oscars, just for fun, but I don't have much skin in the game.

Having no cable or paid tv subscriptions of any kind, I'm so out of the loop on these things! But, I actually don't mind. It's interesting to read the conversations and opinions, though.

Adrian Brody generated mad respect in fans of the TV series “Succession” when he took a rather minor role for one episode. And THEN, in a subsequent episode, he participated in a crowd scene, a non-speaking part where the camera panned past him. Everyone was all agog because this Oscar winner stooped so “low.”

but really—-not low—since Succession was the best thing on tv. Rumor was Adrian’s girlfriend, Georgina Chapman (founder of
Marchesa line of elegant clothing and
Harvey Weinstein’s ex wife) LOVED Succession and urged him to take a role.

I am trying out “Poor Things” an Oscar nominated film from 2023. Weird as hell and pretty interesting so far, 20 minutes into it.It is a horror/Frankenstein fantasy of sorts.

I think I made it 10 minutes. Just too weird for me.

Must be my brain but movies and TV shows these days rarely hold my interest.

I finished it. I loved it. It was insane. I loved it. So much blatant sex! I’m surprised this film was made, and even more surprised it seemed to be mainstream.

The film I am talking about is “Poor Things” a Frankenstein absurdist comedy set in quasi-Victorian times,,but more of a Jules Verne /Steampunk setting. The sets were fabulous, and the costumes were pretty nice. The score punctuated when was needed in its weird way..

My daughter live-tweeted me from her attendance of "The Brutalist" - here are some tidbits:

I am watching The Brutalist in the theater and it is 3.5 hours long, has a 15 min intermission in the middle like we’re living in 1960, and they gave me a little package with illustrations of the central character’s architectural designs and illustrated color postcards when I walked into the theater!
It also has gratuitous artsy clips of 20s b&w porn

I am not sure a single film has ever Oscar-baited harder than this ngl
It’s got a serious modernist spiky score than is challenging some of older patrons in the audience which is entertaining bc I think they lived through this the first time

Ok, the second half is UNHINGED and we end up in surreal drug trip land in a marble quarry in Italy for a bit there

I don’t think it had any excuse to be 3.5 hours long; it is weirdly immersive but I don’t actually know if I liked it or not

I’d bet decent money that it wins Best Picture at the Oscars this year
Also let’s appreciate that Jack Black is up for a Razzie for Worst Actor for that dreadful Dear Satan film
