I had one and didn't like it. Food, etc, kept falling down onto the freezer seal and it needed constant cleaning - eventually causing cracks.

Currently have a freezer on the top and I'm not thrilled with it either. I guess my next one will be a side-by-side. LOL

I never thought about food falling onto the freezer seal but it makes sense.

We have a large LG bottom freezer unit. I love it. I have shoulder issues and cannot reach. I have organized the bottom freezer to there are basically 4 specific food areas and I can find things faster. I could cram more in but then it would be messy and hard to find things. I am on the shorter side and do not have to kneel or have any other issues getting things out of the freezer. Now because of my shoulders, the tallest shelf in the refrigerator is hard to use and easy to lose things in the back.

So like many things, it depends on your physical issues.

Ditto! Much prefer freezer on the bottom!

Hated side by side! Both sides were narrow and a frozen pizza would not even lie flat!

Yes, that is something I keep hearing about when I mention side-by-side. Maybe I just need to stop using a freezer!

    (hmmm....Actually, an interesting thought.)

we utilize a big chest freezer regularly so I couldn’t live without a freezer. But in this current house, the freezer is just steps away from the kitchen. The chest freezer sits in the garage, which is attached to our kitchen so it’s very handy. Theoretically, I could live without a freezer in the refrigerator.

happystuff, our bottom freezer allows us to buy a few things we love when they are on sale and freeze them for later. Or my hubby will make a big pot of chili and I will freezer meal sized portions for later. We did have a big freezer but when it died, we decided to try living with only the one with our refrigerator. It has forced us to make more decisions about fresh food, limit how much we buy ahead and rotate our frozen food. On the whole it was a good decision to not replace it.

30 years ago when we picked over 100 pounds of blueberries at a time or bought big quantities of garden produce/meat ahead of time, the big freezer was necessary. Now at over 70, not so much.

I love to “shop” out of my freezer. I base my meals by what is in the freezer…. where I store the frugal purchases I’ve made or food I’ve prepared to be eaten at a later date. I can’t imagine trying to cook with little or nothing to choose from and have to go shopping all the time!

Many seniors I know go out to eat continuously because they have nothing in the house. Both expensive and unhealthy IMO.
