Happyhiker: In our urban area, it is wise to not get people wandering around used to taking things for "free" left around a house. Used to work well but now likely to find everything on a porch, from furniture to decoration, gone. We cannot even leave a garage door open for 5 minutes while we walk to the front of the house (ask me how I know). We have been lucky that packages appear to be safe on our porch but one block away on a slightly more busy street they are not.

Arranged pickups are fine. You have to know your neighborhood.

Back in Austin, the city trash service offered bulky pickup days where one could set out just about anything and they would pick it up, ie old furniture, mattresses etc. People looked forward to seeing what they could snag on the curb. Here, we pay for private trash - ridiculous for a city this size - and they offer no extras. At least eight different trash companies rumble down the alley all week - dumb. Even after big storms, we are on our own to figure out what to do with all the broken limbs.
