Little Free Libraries- could be a cute neighborhood project

A friend sent me this link to the Little Free Library website and I'm kind of smitten with the idea. I have boxes and boxes of children's books. It could be fun to get some neighborhood kids together to build and install a few of these in our neighborhood. The kids could put out the books they've already read or outgrown and share with the other kids in the neighborhood.

There is one in my town but so far the person who has stocked it has had none returned. Of course, it isn't too far from the public library that is full of books and open seven days a week. I think in a small neighborhood it would be ideal.

I LOVE this idea! I have lots of books I could contribute. What a wonderful concept. Wonder if I could put one in my front yard and not have it filled up with chip wrappers and coffee cups via the middle schoolers across the street?

I've seen these where I live too. The books seem to be returned (at least I've seen the inventory change).

I figure I would start with books I would otherwise donate. That way if they didn't come back, it wouldn't be too big a deal.

I'll have to ask around and see if anyone else is interested in doing this with me.

We have one near our house! We just peeked at it today. I think in our neighborhood the danger would be that people actually donate too many books, or out of date ones, or in poor condition . . . but we shall see. Some of them were nice, and some of them were children's books. Nothing that caught our eye today, but you never know. And we never hang on to fiction, so any that come into our lives via garage sales, etc. go back out into the world, maybe into a Little Free Library in the future?

Kelli that book sharing idea is fun too! I haven't had a chance to talk to my neighbors yet, but I was thinking maybe we could combine this with some kind of fun summer reading program.

I learned about these recently, too, and love the idea, particularly for rural areas where the libraries might not be so convenient. It's a great way to informally trade books among neighbors, too.
