Get the diamonds appraised--my grandmother's ring that I inherited is worth way more than my diamond, and it is smaller. I love it--it is from the 1920's, my favorite era in jewelry. It is also platinum.

What a piece of jewelry appraised for is light years away from what you can actually sell it for. You always take a big loss if you need to sell jewelry. Appraisals are for insurance purposes.

Very true, but it's still worth more than my newer diamond, that was what I was trying to say. Just because it's old does not mean it is worthless, like IL was saying. I wouldn't sell either of them but will give them to my granddaughters.

I picture a typical honkin’ man’s ring with itty bitty tiny diamonds pretty close to chips. Of course, I do not know what it really looks like.

Here is a 3 stone diamond ring that totals 1 ct for all three stones--she did say "largish"

That might not be your taste, but it's something you could do with three not huge diamonds

Yes, you’re right the diamonds might be worth a little something. I’m still assuming it’s a man’s ring, but perhaps it is not.

I think women must like jewelry the way we’re talking about this ring belonging to someone else, and we haven’t even seen it!

I am obsessed with old jewelry settings--I love looking at them-- it is very exciting to reset an old family stone in something new. I worked with this jeweler to reset a family stone and it turned out really beautiful.

(This is not that one, this is one they have that looks kind of like Grandmother's ring.)

VINTAGE DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING 1.72ct ROUND CUT YELLOW GOLD MARQUISE ACCENTS (ivyandrose.com)

They are easy to work with and very nice and fast, too.

That is nice. I have a great aunt’s diamond engagement ring from 1918 that I like.

my family are not jewelry people so this was always considered a flashy ring by us. In my youth I thought it was rather awful in its gaudiness, but now I like it.

Very cool! Do you know if it's an old mine cut or Old European cut? From picture looks like old mine?
