Thank you. He is quite the cat.
My rave for today is that at almost 50, I am finally confident in myself that I can be bare faced on the weekends... sometimes. :~)
@Iris... after posting those pictures, I found this one which sums up his life in a nutshell. Sitting by the fire while he meticulously bathes himself. :laff:

Just got my first cataract eye surgery. One week later 20/20 in that eye and I could see most of the 20/15 line. Now I a happily waiting for the second one at the end of this week.
Super easy, simple, fast, no pain. Only discomfort is when they pull off the tape holding the drape to the face. Wish I had not waited even one day. I have worn glasses for 60 years.

Sweetana, good job. DH went from having super bad eyesight all of his life to nearly 20/20 after cataract surgery. This is truly one of the modern miracles of medicine.
sweetana- congratulations! I am thankful every day for the surgery! Having 6 pairs of readers from the drug store everywhere in the house and car is the only down side! BUT! I don't have glasses at all as of now. Might succumb to progressives if I can't pass the drivers' eye exam without them, but so far I've been thrilled every day to be glasses free.
Good news indeed, Sweetana!
This morning when walking my dog in the local cemetery with large trees as per my usual routine for some time, visiting with the other regulars, some facing serious health challenges and others just glad to be about on a cooler morning, I commented to one couple about the unique, fun, supportive community feeling that exists. They agreed with enthusiasm with the DH saying, "You come here and things are 'normal' and friendly". We laughed about an informal daily gathering in a cemetery as being normal but it is. During lockdown, it was part of our bubbles which included the maintenance staff.
Newcomers gradually get to know each other, where we live, where we came from, family situation, share recipes, advice based on experience, successes and challenges, etc. It is a unique community. Some of the regulars join in the conversations, others don't; some have dogs to walk, some don't. Some are young and others very old and frail. I have learned to mention if I am going away for a few days as they discuss who is going to check on me if I am missing too long. It struck me today as kind of neat how human beings can be quite remarkable social, tolerant creatures. Wish more of the world was like this.

Razz, that’s great about your cemetery friends:)). Cataract surgery results last forever and getting it done was great. I still need reading glasses though.
What a lovely story, Razz, and what a great group. One of the problems of living so isolated with Covid is forgetting just how great people are, for the most part.

For the last year or two, I had been saving egg cartons for a local woman who raises chickens. I don't know her but she had put out a request on our local FB giving page. Today she sent me a message that she wants to give me a dozen eggs as a thank you, which is a sweet and unexpected surprise. :)

How nice, rr! I used to do the same thing, but then was told the person had enough for a couple years. I guess she got responses from more people than just me. LOL
The orchid that I gave Mom when she went into the first assisted living place looked dead after a year in isolation in the pandemic--obviously she had stopped watering it, and nobody else bothered. It was one brown
leaf. I brought it home in January and now it is healthy and flourishing, with three glossy green leaves!
(She used to love her orchids, and always gave then a bath with the sprayer every day, because she said they lived in tropical rain forests, and it rained every day. I am suspicious of this "ice cube orchid thing." So bringing it back feels like I am channeling her spirit a little and she's still in there!)

I cleaned out a storage room so... no, I really didn't deserve it. :laff: Even told my boss that. He said that I was "part of the process" so that is why I was included with the rest of my officemates. Really only 3 out of the 5 of us did the bulk of the work and deserved it. The other person did some labels for the project so she really didn't deserve anything either in my opinion. Made me feel like I was part of the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality and I hate that.
Nice reward for your work!

Mass Audubon has given the green light to start feeding the birds again! There has been a mysterious bird illness in the Middle Atlantic states, and we were asked to take down our feeders as a preventative measure a month or two ago. We've been feeding the birds here for about 35 years, and I felt like such a bad, unreliable friend when my birds would show up and there was no food for them.
Rosa, Good news. I'll have to check here in MD as I shut down the bird baths as well....Hoping it is better here, now. enjoy the birds. We had several goldfinches on the cone flower. I did keep out the hummingbird feeder.
That notice was in the Midwest, too.

I finally figured out the clips mystery! I kind of did it again, only this time I wrote "FB clips." It was a reminder to order some spare clips for my Fitbit Inspire, since I wear it clipped to my clothing instead of on my wrist, and the clips tend to break after a bit. I've gone ahead and ordered them so I don't have to write any more perplexing little notes to myself, at least on that particular topic, lol. The vines still need to be clipped. :)

I am over the hump and nearly to the end of the race with revising bylaws for my neighborhood association. These bylaws have not been scrutinized in 20 years. They have been added to, piecemeal, and have been internally inconsistent.
There are large swaths of text that were very specific about conducting a meeting, and I know when that text went in into place and which president put it into place. I don’t remember why though. It is all unnecessary.
I slashed an entire Article that made no sense to me. I carried it around to three former presidents asking them what is this article about? Why do we have this in Bylaws? What does it mean? None of them could tell me, although amazingly one ex-president named another ex-president that I consulted as the guy who put it into the bylaws. Haha he did not remember.
We slashed the bylaws from 12 pages down to 8 pages. That is progress. We changed a few concepts, but mainly it’s the same set of Bylaws but now that they are very clean.
This board will not have excuses in the future to fail to follow the bylaws.

A friend just gifted me some double-wall glasses and they are amazing! No condensation forms on the outside of an icy cold drink, even on a hot humid day! I've always been a fan of the virtually indestructible Duralex bistro glasses, but these are the best thing ever for a cold drink on a hot day. They also are kind of pricey and look quite fragile, so hedonistic adaptation here I come!

Yeah, I agree! I think there's something appealing about seeing the condensation telling you the drink is nice and icy cold.
And conversely, interesting note about the customer desired experience (n=1: me) when it comes to drinking tea. When I was at the Portland Japanese Garden I bought a beautiful tea "glass"--it was ceramic, and insulated with a little rubber top so you could put it in your car cup holder. Well, I wound up never using it. I didn't like not being able to feel the warmth of the tea in my hands when holding the cup. Wound up giving it away during The Purge.

as an objective observer, I can view this as an example of the legal system’s respect for autonomy, respect to act for oneself and retain real freedom.
How did your mother get an attorney? She doesnt seem capable of picking up a phone and calling someone, hiring them to represent her. And isn’t she far away from where she practiced law back years ago?She wouldnt know anyone in the legal community now, would she?

Correct; she is unable to participate in her own defense. The court appointed a lawyer for her. At this point, both attorneys are stipulating that she lacks capacity.

I don't like having my glass drip all over me. In the hot, humid weather, I often have a paper towel wrapped around my glass to keep it from dripping on me, the table, and the floor. It hasn't been one of the ultimate pain points of my life, but one of those nagging, mosquito-like annoyances.
Wet glasses can also slip out of one's hand. I thought the new ones looked very elegant.

Sister & I went to a nearby farm today that is a favorite spot for produce and baked goods and pumpkins, etc. Today we went to their pick your own zinnia field! For $12., they give you a generous sized vase and the run of the zinnia beds. It was a perfect, warm and sunny day and there were bees and dragonflies and butterflies, and we had a wonderful time, and now my house is full of beautiful flowers. Zinnias make me happy, and having fun with my sister makes me happy!

What a great idea! Zinnias are great! Mine are still keeping my gardens alive-looking and I cut a bunch every week to put in my vase. They're DH's favorite flower.
My DD got a flower CSA this year--something I never heard of. Every week she picked up a fresh bunch of cut flowers.
When she first told me about it I thought she was getting a flour CSA.. because I had never heard of a non-food CSA. I was thinking, gee how much baking can you do?
This is the latest I've been able to keep my zinnias alive- they still look beautiful.
There actually is a flour CSA in western MA- well its a grain CSA and one of the options is milled flour. :) Its a once yearly delivery.

Thought of rosarugosa for this post - got a text from a sibling this morning wanting to take a "spontaneous" day-trip drive through the country and visit a historic site. Ended up being three of us sisters. Historic site was closed inside the building but the outside grounds and small building with films were open and just as wonderful. On the l-o-n-g drive home, we stopped at a winery and had a wine tasting (about 2 tablespoons of wine each "taste", so no worries of intoxication - LOL) and then stopped at an orchard/farmers stand for apples. I got a huge bag of Gala seconds that will end up on the dehydrator and, hopefully, applesauce! The most important thing was the time with my siblings and doing spontaneous things on a cloudy, but wonderful, Sunday. Hope everyone else has had as good a day!

This is not really a rave, but I'm parking it here anyway. Maybe it's a rave about feeling like I'm where I belong.
DH's birthday was the other day and we decided we'd meet two of our kids and SIL for bowling. During the day I was wearing my "uniform" of denim leggings, Van sneakers, and LL Bean hoodie. When DH got dressed, he really got overdressed for bowling, but he has lost a ton of weight and is feeling great, so he's returning to HIS roots from when he would shop at the tony spots in Princeton. Starched casual dress shirt, linen shorts, deck shoes. So I decided to up my game and changed my outfit.
We get to the bowling alley and the kids commented that DH looked great, and I looked VERY Vermont. "Yeah," I said, "I decided to get dressed up." It then hit me that getting "dressed up" meant I had changed out of one LL Bean outfit and into an LL Bean flannel shirt and lumberjack-print quilted outdoor vest. I said to my daughter, who dresses VERY stylishly: "uh oh. When getting dressed up means I get out my best flannel, maybe you should worry about me."
But truth be told, I don't care if I ever get "dressed up" Princeton-style again.

I absolutely love jury duty... Unfortunately, due to Covid, when I was selected, it was held in a 1930's school gymnasium that had very bad acoustics and echoing, I could not hear, due to Meniere's Disease And that is with top shelf hearing aids too. I aked to be excused, as I didn't feel that I could hear well enough. I would not feel it to be fair if I misunderstood the conversation. Parking has never been a a problem. Where I currently live and when I lived in the Seattle/King County area, where traffic and a parking is a sh1tshow. We always had a parking pass/ validation. Masks are not an issue as I believe in science. I have worn them for over 35 years and I also believe in the greater good. However, You Mileage May Vary !Splat!

I regularly read up on the science, including as summarized in Becker's Hospital Review which I check daily. There is a push on by some in health care to mandate masks that actually might work vs any random face covering.

Extra space before the colon, missing comma after sitcom, extra space after Arab, missing period after the last sentence. Perhaps factual but not fun to read as sloppily written.
Raving - plumber came and shower/tub is fixed and usable! Since we paid cash, was less than half the 1st estimate!!!
Well done, happystuff!

This falls under the umbrella of "addictive work"
Last year I established how much I would need to make to achieve spending limits/debt-reduction goals. As a goal-oriented person, I typed up that Big Number and taped it to my window sill, where I could see it every day.
Every year for some reason I always book 20 projects. So, as of last week, I had booked 19, but those 19 projects enabled me to meet my dollar goal--that alone was exciting to me!
Today, I was asked to take on a qualitative project that involved interviewing 48 patients and caregivers, but they all had to be done in December. Well, I've already committed to interview 30 patients on another project in December. So I got out my calendar and my calculator and I saw that I could feasibly do both.
Committing to the project was against my prior commitment to myself that after #19 was booked that I would not accept any other project so I could enjoy Christmas.
Goodbye Christmas.
When I got the offer for the #20 project, I asked DH if he would be OK with me giving up all of December to 78 interviews, even if it means a few interviews on Saturdays and between Christmas and New Years. He said he would. I needed his commitment, so that when I can't go for drives to look at houses lit up, or don't have time to clean the house for company, he can't complain.
I also got him to agree that I would take all of this money and apply it 100% toward debt.
This is going to be hard work. So I ask myself, Why did I do it??
So, it falls under "Daily Rave" because I have to be grateful, right?? I'm almost 70 years old, and I don't have to downsize to a van and head towards Nomadland. It's a "rave" for the power of goal-setting (I reached my dollar goal and my project # goal). It's a "rave" for the support of DH.
I could have put it in the "rant" section because I truly am so ambivalent about working hard at my age. But then I think about the Presidents who are working at 78 years old; the actors who are working at 80-90 years old. What makes me so special?
I speak about how much of my work is distasteful because it's all about the money. I'm not bringing about World Peace. I'm not curing people, or teaching people, or helping the environment. Face it: I'm a drug dealer. But the fact that I have skills that people want at my age is a bit of a good thing.
It's up to me when I give it all up, but I expect I'll have at least 2 more years of this, so if I can shorten it by a month or two by taking on this job in December, I guess that makes it all a "Daily Rave."
Catherine good for you for staying focused on your goals.

Closing weekend at the local quarry for the year. Had a great solo dive on the biggest platform (think of a deck elevated from the bottom so you don’t stir up the silt). A local sidemount instructor came by with a student and briefly shared platform. He later told me I looked great. He’s never seen me dive before so that was great.

DH and I went to see a live theatrical performance last night for the first time in two years! It is a small local theater that we love and they always do a cool spooky show in October. This was "Short and Scary" and it was eight mini-plays. They took Covid precautions very seriously: only 25 allowed in the audience, chairs well spaced apart, had to show proof of vaccine or negative test, and masks required. All performers and crew were vaccinated. Here we are in our festive seasonal masks (Rosa needs her roots done, lol!)

I'm scared to venture in crowds now unless I get my booster. But with my boyfriends awful reaction to the booster (he is fine just a couple days of fever, body aches and headache no tylenol could cure), I'm not looking forward to that either, it's like geez I'll suffer for a couple days crazy "sick" from the booster.
Nor will they even give clear guidance on boosters for people my age either (though noone can beat Trump for sheer stirring up chaos, Biden's handling of it all has been pretty incompetent I have to say).

Due to Covid and virtual learning, there hadn't been any promotions in my youngest's ROTC journey. Now that things are back to normal, he has finally gotten a promotion to Petty Officer 3rd Class. He is also an Assistant Operations Officer. What I do find odd is that he said he will be receiving a medal for returning to school after the whole pandemic thing played out. Not sure why that warrants a medal. What else was he supposed to do?
I feel like I have the world's greatest daughter-in-law. We saw them yesterday and had lunch and played board games and laughed so hard. She loves the Dansk giant salad bowl that I found for her at at Michigan estate sale--my son didn't want to take it because he said where would we store it, and she took one look at it and said, "I'll take it." She went walking out with it cradled against her protectively, like a baby. So yesterday she made a fabulous salad in it and I complimented her on it and she started laughing and said they had been fighting over it, and we all laughed about that. It's become sort of a family joke but also an instant heirloom, since the moment I saw it, I wanted her to have it--they entertain a lot, and it's beautiful, and I never have that many people over. What is great is she already cherishes it, and I get to visit and see this happy family around her table, the way I always dreamed.

I realize I do this particular thing religiously whenever I see people panhandling around Santa Fe: when I am at home and go into my Quicken program to track the day's expenditures, I log in the $2.00 I donate to panhandlers and I also put a quick note in the memo area. For instance, today I gave $2 to the guy with the cardboard sign that said "dreaming of a cheeseburger," which was then noted in the memo column when I got home. I do spend time each day thinking about the homeless people I see all over the place panhandling. Last week I gave $5 to a family with a little girl standing in the entrance of the Walmart parking lot, and marked it appropriately in my memo column. I think it helps me humanize these people and their plight. I wish I could afford to do more. I wish I could give out $50 bills and really make some sort of difference in someone else's life and provide at least some comfort for the day or night.
Yet other days I have to harden my heart and stare past them as I sit at the traffic light, waiting for it to turn green. I cannot fix this huge problem on my own but I always feel like I should do more, somehow.
It is really hard to see and help those in need. Neat approach to humanize them by noting something unique each time.
You are in a warmer area so may have more than the colder climate such as mine. I finally decided that I would focus my donations to the Salvation Army in our area as they supply food, shelter and coordinate services where needed. That way, I believe that my donation is not going for buying drugs.

My unpracticed eye can’t tell if someone executes a double, triple, or a quad, I was always annoyed when they attempted their triples and quads and didn’t make it and it ruined their performance. I pretty much stopped watching women’s figure skating a few years ago because of this.
Well this girl can execute quads and impress those who know about skating, meanwhile she can impress me with her artistry because her jumps do not interfere with it. She jumps effortlessly and never signals that she’s getting ready to do a big jump.
She is the new powerhouse in women’s ice-skating. She just made her debut in the senior category.
Quite remarkable what the finely tuned human body can do so beautifully. Three coaches! - I wonder how each of their direction is focused.

I don't know! Here was the cycle on it--gave it to Mom at Christmas in the assisted living, only to find it unwatered and just yellow stalks, no leaves a couple of weeks after Christmas. Took home and put it in a window all winter and watered it a lot and it got new leaves. Then it got too big for the window so in about June, I put it outside where it got really big, then brought it in and put it in the living room in a southfacing window, but the room is pretty cool most of the time. But I didn't keep it out of the light. But it was cool in that room?
If it went dormant, it was way last January.

But then I read communications carefully and I see that I’ve committed to the year 2023. Yes it is summer 2023 that I have to pull off this obligation.

Thanks for asking! She was named by her second owner who got her as a puppy for showing. Baggy Pants had lots of wrinkles around her feet when she was a puppy, so that’s how she got her name.
That owner gave her to me when she was about five years old because she needed to make room in her kennel for other dogs. Baggy did not do especially well in the show ring and never earned a championship, one reason being that she was “doggy “in her physique which means she was big like a male dog. Her owner didn’t take her out often to shows 4117because she was mad at Baggy’s breeder, a feud that had nothing to do with Baggy Pants.

We were able to score a walk in booster shot for my husband yesterday. He had appointment for the 20th, but every day counts around here. They are scheduled out about 9 days now, hard to get them. We just lucked out--I walked up a pharmacy in New Hampshire and said did they have any extra and they did! So relieved.
Son's fil is home from hospital and on oxygen and very weak--currently, he is an invalid from having Covid. No idea what recovery will look like. So I was pushing husband to get boosted as soon as possible.
This is the thread where I meant to post about a nice office holiday party. Last year we didn't get one due to covid so I appreciated it more. Marzipan.
Maybe I’ve never had good marzipan, but I don’t like that stuff. I think of it mostly as a medium to craft food art.
Marzipan.
When I was a kid, I was always attracted to the pretty marzipan creations in the candy store display case, but my mother would tell me they didn't taste good. When I was old enough to test this for myself, I learned that it just meant Mom didn't like marzipan (this turned out to be true of some other things as well). I like marzipan, although I do prefer chocolate.
Maybe I’ve never had good marzipan
The good stuff comes from Germany, and is hard to find except in specialty stores (I get mine from a German deli that imports German goods). My favorite is in a loaf shape and covered with dark chocolate. Those fake fruits made from marzipan are horrid.
No stollen for Christmas this year--not a rave, a rant, but sort of marzipan-related.
Not liking fact that I did not encounter single Lebkuchen or stollen this year. And no Swedish pancake mix or lingonberries at the local grocery. Not cool, Maine.

Recently I've been overcome with appreciation for the good people of this world. People I see on TV making the world a better place, simple acts of kindness, news stories about people using their skills and talents and sheer will to do really good things.
And people who give good customer service, like the guy I talked to today from the Social Security Administration, make me happy because interactions like the really pleasant one I had with him show me that there are so many people out there doing ordinary things who are just.. good.
I agree with you, Catherine.
After the heavy snowfall on Monday, my neighbour came over to help move the big bank of snow left by the snowplow - 3 ft high and 4 ft deep and 25 ft wide.
When I switched my internet provider last week, there were some wrinkles in the process. It was resolved with such courtesy by the customer service and tech support from both from the company I left and the one to which I switched.
I had a financial review today with my CFP at my credit union; she is so helpful considering all the possibilities and pros and cons of each.
I did a large grocery shopping today - items are well laid out and fully stocked, customers were courteous and smiling as we skirted around each other pushing the bulky shopping carts. People are all simply trying to do a good job or be considerate.
Life is good!
Got to rave about the customer service at a local Verizon store. They helped my 89 year old mother in law figure out some issues with her new phone. They were so nice she is planning another visit to ask a few more questions. We cannot help her as she has a totally different phone from ours. Not often she is happy with service these days and they must have listened well and been very patient.

Yes! I brought my mom for an MRI today, and every single person we encountered at the MRI facility was as nice as they could possibly be.

Just spent about 1.5 hours on the phone with car insurance. Had a lot of changes and the individual who I dealt with on the phone was FANTASTIC! Took all the changes I threw at him in stride and we are saving a significant amount of money now. I'm thrilled to have this off my to-do list and to have dealt with someone that made it easy.

That is great, Happy. Sometimes one phone call can amount to more savings than months of being careful at the grocery store!
We ate at a new diner. We have passed it for months and it didn't look very promising because it's in a strip mall, but I gave my husband money for Christmas to go out to a diner, so yesterday we went there and it was great. Best of all, when we walked in, customers were super friendly and told us to sit anywhere, and everyone acted like we were local.
People are so friendly here in the winter--it's just like Michigan, super friendly in the winter and aloof in the summer, since you might be a tourist.
The food was fantastic. Why are diner sausages so much better than sausages anywhere else?
Glad you enjoyed it. They will remember you as local folks now. Diners are community spots usually.

Corned beef hash is also much much tastier at a diner.

We are doing two major house renovations with many, many workmen. We’ve not had one stinker. I can think of one instance where there was some inattention to detail when the floor contractor was too busy talking to me about his place in the country, but it wasn’t deliberate.
Our Hermann house isn’t DONE yet, but 80% of the Really big work to be performed by contractors is done. We love our contractor. The subcontractors we hired for this for landscaping seems to have done a good job. The floor guys are working right now. Most people who have been through a major renovation don’t have universally postive Relationships with their contractors.
do you know that truism about products, it is this: can’t have things that are cheap and fast and accurate. You can get two out of three, but it’s very difficult to get all three.
In our case we went for only one of those on the triad, accuracy. We wanted solid workmanlike product. None of it was cheap, none of it was fast.

Have to say that I love reading about all these raves. Congrats to all for all the good things going on!
Driving home last night from Dinner Theater, no cars on the road, the misty moon was shining and then as I turned to corner to our street the clouds cleared and that wolf moon howled me home. It was the first time in many weeks that I've driven and the first time in months that I drove in the dark, so nerves are a problem. But I basked in the beauty and quiet.
Was out of curiosity checking to see if any of my exes died and saw the most recent one has faced 3 separate domestic assault and battery charges and was sent to jail for 90 days. He was charged with strangulation and witness intimidation and kicked the victim in the face, dragged her across the ground, pushed her to the ground and punched her in the face, and another time punched her in the face injuring her eye.
So glad as someone (Jane?) said to be rid of him, though he was never violent with me.

I'm feeling grateful and sentimental and whatever, but my rave is for the majority of people on this forum who are sooooo friendly, helpful, kind, considerate, etc. When people ask for help or post personal issues or simply just rant or rave - the majority of folks on this forum step up with help, compassion, kindness, suggestions and more. With other things going on in my life at the moment, I'm sooooo grateful for the community of special people here. Thank you all.
End of sappy rave - move on, people. :)

I have this wonderful neighbour who is clearing the snow off my driveway. This is the third time in 10 days.
The garbage and recycling team for our county are working under extreme cold through heavy snow and now ice conditions. I am so grateful for these services.

Wonderful! I've learned that even a simple "thank you" goes a long way. There is a lot to be said for gratitude.
Case in point - a previous rave of mine was the car insurance fiasco. The representative was soooo wonderful, at the end of the call I asked to be connected to his supervisor. Got the supervisor's voice mail, but still left a rave for the representative! Hopefully it resulted in something beneficial for the young man.
I never used to think about doing that, but what a difference it makes for the individual actually doing the job! I will always ask for a supervisor in order to sing praises of the employee doing the actual work!

I feel the same way, Happy. This community is very important to me!
I finally got my six weeks of back unemployment pay! One of the issues which held it up was that they *thought* my self-employment kept me from looking for full-time employment. I finally got someone when I called that actually seemed to give a sh**, who wrote a detailed email to the adjudicator explaining that I was laid off from my full-time job and that I did my part-time employment up to 15 maybe hours per week (if that) in the evenings and on the weekends.
I feel a whole lot better having that money finally. I made some payments on some medical bills that I needed to do. Otherwise, I am going to keep on the lookout for the right position that works for me. I really have to be careful of keeping in mind what I am realistically physically able to do; there is a part of my brain that stills thinks I can run around and lift things and do a lot of repetitive stuff. I swear, I am my own worst enemy at times.

WOOHOO!!! I know what even a little extra money (even an extra $100) can be like when you really need it (when unemployed).
So glad I got my little under desk cycle I got a year ago. Use it in front of the TV or today I was on a Zoom call for a local shipwreck group. I didn’t need to participate so had camera and speaker on mute. Did 20.5 miles in 47 minutes. Great use of time. I’ve cancelled the gym membership. I work out 5-6 days a week. Don’t have to get home late. Can do it whenever I like. Don’t have to risk getting the plague.
Found out yesterday that Home Goods finally has an online shopping website. Problem is that you have to spend $120 to get free shipping. Now don't get me wrong, I could easily spend that much but I don't want to (at least right now). I literally want a $15 item but the shipping is another $15. I suppose I could just drive one county over and see if they have it in the store.
Could you phone the out of town store and ask to reserve that item for you? I prepay an order and then do pick-up at the customer service desk.

The store isn't that far from me. Probably less than 30 minutes. I just prefer shopping online as I tend to look around too much in a store and buy more than I planned on.

The Home Goods store I occasionally go to, is always jampacked. I mean it doesn’t matter when I go there—am, pm, saturday, tuesday—jammed.
Ours is not a big box store it’s a store in the mall so it’s not terrifically large.

I would imagine ours will be too. Another reason why I like shopping online. The county I live in doesn't have a lot of shopping options. We only have Walmart really. The next county over is where the stores are (Target/Kohl's/Home Goods/Marshall's/etc). People from my county flock to the next county plus all the people who live there. I still haven't made up my mind yet if I will venture into the store, get it online and pay the shipping cost, or just not get it. I plan on decorating for Valentine's Day this weekend and I'll see what it looks like before I decide. If I think this item that I want would really look good in my home, I'll get it. If I think the house looks good without it, I'll save my money.
I caved and went back to get the item online. Unfortunately, I found more stuff that I liked so instead of spending $30 ($15 for the item and $15 for shipping), I spent close to $90. Curse you cute home decor!!!! My name is Kelly and I am a home decor addict. :laff:

Today is a Rave because I have turned the corner on three months of long days and weeks of work. I have been executing 5 different projects (2 is the threshold of my comfort zone). Over the course of 10 weeks, I had to work through Christmas vacation, couldn't leave the house from Monday through Friday, completed almost 150 hour-long interviews, and wrote 5 PT reports each ranging from 20-40 pages and requiring analysis and graphics).
Yesterday I sent the last of the major reports out and did the last interview for two of the projects. I'm down to basically one active project now, and I can feel the relief pouring through my bones. I haven't slept much this week--up at 2:30am to write that last report a couple of days in a row.
Today is my 45th wedding anniversary and DH and I are going to head into Burlington for sushi (weather permitting). If it's too cold to do that, we'll just hunker down and watch movies or something. But I just feel great.
Next step: figure out how to maintain a sane level of work moving forward.

Inquiring minds would like to know - how does one celebrate the end of a 33 year drought? I remember the emotion of the Blue Jays winning moment as some folks are still celebrating.

Well, when I was younger I would have probably toasted our luck with a few too many adult beverages and generally made a fool of myself. Tonight, as a much older man, I find myself simply giggling a lot.

33 year drought is nothing. 108 years for the Cubs in 2016. Boy, was that a celebration.
One does wonder at the sheer joy in a team winning whatever the sport.
I agree that 108 years is a long time for a team to even exist never wait to celebrate a win.

If you ever get the chance, watch Ken Burns’ Baseball documentary series. I had no idea baseball went that far back for having organized team play.
I had no idea baseball went that far back for having organized team play. The Cincinnati Reds have been around since 1876 or 146 years ago. During that time they have a W/L record of 10,713 - 10,501 for an all-time winning percentage of .505 which is a wonder based on the past decade or two. >:(

We have a historic baseball league here in St. Louis currently. They play by 1880s rules. They wear uniforms of cotton and wool. I used to go to their games occasionally, because they play in our neighborhood park during the summer. They have authentic balls from that period And other equipment is of authentic materials.
One of the funny things is if they swear they’re fined a penny or a nickel, I can’t remember which. They refer to each other as “SIR “a lot.

I hope they are not segregated as baseball was pre-Jackie Robinson.
Well, my son likes to do sports betting on occasion, and this was one of those occasions. So after he did all the stats, all the analyses and all that, he bet on the Chiefs. Then he asked his son (my 4 y.o. grandson) who he wanted, and my grandson picked the "tigers" and won $120. I told my son that he should put that money into H's college fund and to quit while he's ahead in terms of encouraging his son to gamble.

That's what my brother says as well, he'll never forgive the Rams for leaving St Louis. He's since adopted the Chiefs as his home team and texted me a fair amount of trash talk during the 1st half of last night's game. He was uncharacteristically quiet during the 2nd half. :~)

Today as i clean out a small shelf of books, I am marveling about our neighbor’s meticulously researched books about Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and and Clark expedition that mapped our great Western United States.
These books are an amazing thing because they were published by Prometheus books, a serious publisher. A respected publisher. So what is so great about that you might ask? The author, Thomas Danisi, installs electronics for a living. He’s not a double PhD at any university let alone at a prestigious university, let alone even the possessor of an advanced degree.
Do ya know how hard it is to break into the legitimate publishing world? Especially with no respected academic credentials.nearly impossible.
He has been focused on Lewis for decades. His meticulous work in uncovering every tiny piece of information about Meriwether Lewis was respected enough by powers that be to publish it. Danisi came up with a non-standard answer to what happened to Meriwether Lewis. The conventional wisdom is that Lewis committed suicide. Danisi doesn’t think that’s what happened.

Interesting that you would post this at this exact time. I've been going through old photos his morning and just found these of my youngest grandson at the site of Lewis's death. No, there's not much evidence of anything left in the house as it's been restored, probably several times, for the benefit of those of us traipsing through 200 years later. I do recall literature there concerning the mystery of suicide vs murder and the informational signs posted about the property refer to it as an "untimely death".

Supposed to get hit with an ice storm yesterday, so Thursday night they cancelled school for Friday. Custodians still need to show up regardless, but it is to a pretty much empty building and - for me - day hours instead of night. So Friday I got to work early hours with the day guys and do some work I never have time for during the night shift. It felt good to get a few things accomplished, leave work during daylight hours AND - NO ICE!!! :)
Yay, Happystuff. It's amazing what you can done without kids in the building. Glad you had no ice, too!!! Bonus!
Great to have a break in shift to daylight hours!

Thanks. Since it is normally night shift, (eventually) there is no one in the building. But there are set things that need to be done and it leaves little time for cleaning/doing any "extras". These kind of days are nice for getting to some of the extras every now and then.

That is certainly better than what I saw looking out my patio door on Wednesday evening as I was letting the dog out. There was this black mass that looked like a man laying on top of the snow. I double checked with the patio light on and realized that it was the BBQ cover that the strong wind had loosened on one side and blown against the picnic table
With the major storm forecast to start overnight, I got dressed, grabbed some bungee cords, retrieved the cover tramping through 18 inches of snow and recovered the BBQ grateful that I had seen it in time.
Oh my goodness, Razz and Rosa! Messages from beyond, written in the snow.

Figure skater Kamila Valieva. Whoah.
A skater like this comes along once in a lifetime. She is magnificent. She’s only 15.
I stopped watching figure skating several years ago when the emphasis became about triple jumps. Only half the girls could complete them, and a quarter of the girls completed them sometimes, and almost all of them signaled when they were going to do a big jump. I don’t care if the skaters can do a double or triple, I simply don’t care about little jumping beans and I felt their routines were ruined by the “is she gonna make it or not” focus on jumps. My last favorite skater was Sasha Cohen who is gorgeous, artistic, and could not do triples.
I thought Tara Lipinski was like a little jumping bean, did not like her as a skater. But this Russian Kamila girl is effortless in completing these triple jumps that the skating world seems to think is important. She does it superbly and consistently. And more importantly to me, her spins and her artistry are remarkable.
I agree! I just watched her routine. Absolutely breathtaking, and as a former competitive figure skater (way back in the mid-'70's) I know how hard all that is. Like all sports, the bar has gotten so high to be at that level it's unbelievable. She has the perfectly amazing blend of artistry and athleticism!
I watched some of the dirt bike/motocross competition a few nights ago. Talk about jumping beans!
The second biggest city in my state lifted its mask mandate last night. The effort was led by two men, one being the Health Director, who is also a pediatrician. There is hope!
