I agree! I just watched her routine. Absolutely breathtaking, and as a former competitive figure skater (way back in the mid-'70's) I know how hard all that is. Like all sports, the bar has gotten so high to be at that level it's unbelievable. She has the perfectly amazing blend of artistry and athleticism!
And now she is doing quads. I guess that is the new thing to achieve, but who cares. I can never count how many rotations they have in the air anyway.
Just dont fall girlie, not worth it.
I did see her fall and the speed in which she jumped up and got back into her routine was amazing.
I just realized I hadn't shared with you guys. This is what I saw when I looked out my back door this past Weds morning:

I guess this should go in rants, but having cut the cord, I haven't been able to watch any of the Olympics. NBC is one of the few networks that I haven't found a way to get free access.

I only watch clips on Youtube. Probably the sports you like are represented there.
It's funny you bring this up, hapypstuff. Last Olympic season, we had the same problem and I was visiting my dil and granddaughter. We thought we had found access, then realized we were actually showing her, who was 3 at the time, the Olympics from four years earlier. We started laughing, realizing that to a 3 year old, it made absolutely no difference what Olympics she was watching, and we all had a good time.
But I get wanting to watch it in real time, as an adult. I miss network tv when that was all there was.

I miss network tv as well! Most of what I actually watch these days is still on network tv.
Cute story! LOL. Even at 3, who knows what kind of impression it made on her!

I will check out youtube, IL. Thanks.
You should be able to get network TV with a good antenna. There are models you can use inside.

Thanks, Jane. Unfortunately, we live in a valley. None of the inside antennas have been able to get access (even the expensive ones!), and we aren't really wanting to install some big outside antenna attached to the house.

Same with us in Hermann. For the first time in our lives we got cable TV two years ago because we got no reception with antennas, even the new types.
Can you get Peacock? I believe it's NBC's streaming channel. It's carrying the games.
https://www.peacocktv.com/?cid=20200715takeflightpaidsearch410&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=paid_search&utm_campaign=20200715takeflight&utm_content=44700030842284201_44700030842284201&&msclkid=ff2a6a973f0015dd53f40895ff80a4e7&gclid=ff2a6a973f0015dd53f40895ff80a4e7&gclsrc=3p.ds
We spent years trying to get access to tv via antenna and we live right downtown in a big city. Finally figured it out and (even though I have no idea how it works) hubby can record all kinds of local channels and we can get the news. I dont watch local shows without recording because I cannot stand the commercials. Even the local news is hard to watch. So much easier to just check what is written online without commercials.

Actually, I do have the free version of Peacock, but it is only allowing access to the Olympics with the Premium plan. But thanks for the suggestion!
My rave for today is about what happened yesterday. Went to a new vet (had only gone once before) and had a fantastic experience. Vet spent time talking to me and I didn't feel like she was just trying to rush me out the door. Everyone was very kind to my cat and seemed to care about why he was there (aggression towards other cat in house). They didn't try to upsell me a bunch of stuff and even saved me another trip to the vet by having the prescription delivered to the house instead of making me go pick it up in a few days.

What drug are you getting for your cat? I am out of the loop entirely on cat medication these days. My last cat died two years ago. I am getting the bug to get another cat. We will have a cat or two in Hermann.
My dog takes anxiety medicine for long rides in the car.

The state mask mandate for schools was lifted effective the end of the month. The Board of Health said they would remove the City mandate when this happens but I don't trust them. They have changed the metrics for lifting it at least 6 times. One idea was keep it in place "in case we get another variant". Yeah, we could get another variant - in 10 years, or 50, or 100.
Anyways, at least there is growing momentum to repeal these mandates. I see two hurdles - first the City mandate, and then even if that is repealed the Library Director could put her own mandate in place. Aluta continua.

I might upgrade to the premium plan for a month, if that's possible.

A local sportscaster was interviewed on a radio show I listen to. He talked about the extreme controls on any footage from the Olympics. It’s not just NBC’s strictures, it is International Olympic committee rules. Local news can’t even show a brief clip. If they have a local athlete doing well at Olympics, they may not show video of their hometown hero. They can only show a still photo.
What a crock of shtz. But as a Capitalist I should support their contractual agreements and not watch illegal clips on YouTube, but I dont.
This guy postulated international Olympic committee was shooting itself in the foot because the Olympics are not being promoted appropriately through video (It is a visual activity, one with movement so it can only be adequately represented in video) therefore their audience is shrinking and people don’t pay attention.
I think he’s right.
mask mandateI don't see masks being worn much here anymore so it's sort of a non-issue. I have started thinking of them like hats - if you want to wear one, do so. Even still I wear one when shopping out of respect to the store personnel who have to wear them all day.
Surprisingly here in the Rio Grande Vally of TX….. most people are still wearing masks.
Saw yesterday that Costco pharmacy sells pet medicines. Might be worth checking out? My prescription there if I pay cash is less than $10 for a 3 month supply otherwise $30 through insurance. Have checked cash price other places and never that low!
Here is some of the fruits of my labors from the estate-clearing job:4202 Got a big bottle of leather conditioner and went to work, and viola! Our old, stained crappy sofa is GONE and we with hired movers we didn't have to lift a finger to move either one!
Wonderful when restoration by thorough cleansing is possible.
I got to do QiGong ( 7 minute stretches) on the porch as it was 42 degrees and sunny. It is wonderful to be outside. Yesterday we pruned the blueberries and it was so much easier with my husband's portable reciprocating saw. He did the work and I hauled the branches. 2 tarps full! And the daffodil greens are poking up.

That's what my brother says as well, he'll never forgive the Rams for leaving St Louis. He's since adopted the Chiefs as his home team and texted me a fair amount of trash talk during the 1st half of last night's game. He was uncharacteristically quiet during the 2nd half. :~)
So sorry Bengals lost. It was close.

Figure skater Kamila Valieva. Whoah.
A skater like this comes along once in a lifetime. She is magnificent. She’s only 15.
I stopped watching figure skating several years ago when the emphasis became about triple jumps. Only half the girls could complete them, and a quarter of the girls completed them sometimes, and almost all of them signaled when they were going to do a big jump. I don’t care if the skaters can do a double or triple, I simply don’t care about little jumping beans and I felt their routines were ruined by the “is she gonna make it or not” focus on jumps. My last favorite skater was Sasha Cohen who is gorgeous, artistic, and could not do triples.
I thought Tara Lipinski was like a little jumping bean, did not like her as a skater. But this Russian Kamila girl is effortless in completing these triple jumps that the skating world seems to think is important. She does it superbly and consistently. And more importantly to me, her spins and her artistry are remarkable.
Oh nooooo! Kamila has been revealed to be doping. i guess if it looks too good to be true, it IS too good.
i wonder if they have her on hormone blockers as well. Skinny petite boy-body girls can propel themselves high into the air and more physically mature skaters cannot. Also, these hugh jumps and hard landings are hard on their developing bones that will eventually catch up to them in skeletal damage.
Dear International Skating Community, please for the love of god stop emphasizing quad or even triple jumps in women’s skating. I dont care about them. Let “mature” skaters of the ripe old age of 25 exhibit their advanced artistry and earn allocades for it. That they cant jump like a dumb bean doesnt matter to me.

I guess I am back to ignoring the ice skating world again except for ice dancing, that I can watch. They don’t jump, it is all about artistry.
I've long preferred ice dancing for the costumes, choreography, and skill. I find figures very boring.
Mild temperatures today - no scraping ice off the windshield, no temperatures in the single digits so even when I blast the heat in the car I need to wear my insulated winter jacket, no heavy boots but instead sneakers. This is a nice foretaste of spring.

Yes, a beautiful day and I really enjoyed my morning walk!
My new 5 dollar watch--I bought two watches on Ebay for parts, looking for a crown for one of Helbros watches, and the listing said these were part watches and not working. So I paid 9.50 for two watches and shipping. I wound them up and they both work beautifully--maybe she did not know these were mechanical watches?
This is the Pesag, which is a Swiss watchmaker, now gone, after polishing to remove tarnish. Even the band is nice.

oh, nice! I wear a big honkin’ Timex men’s watch with a fabric band. I need a fabric band because I wear it daily and through the night and it get sweaty and dirty. These bands are easy to wash.
I often think I would like to have a nice quality watch, a pretty vintage one like this, but they are almost always bracelet styles, right? I can’t wear a bracelet watch, it’s too distracting as it shifts up and down my arm. I think it would also irritate my skin wearing it while I’m gardening and sweating and getting dirty.

This is an expansion band, rather than a true bracelet watch. So it fits snugly and does not shift up and down your arm. Stainless steel might work for you--I just bought one today for the Helbros and it said to wash it with soap and water at least once a month. A lot of nurses wear the expansion bands because you can get the band wet and soapy and slide it up your arm to wash your hands.
Women's watches are really cheap right now--apparently the resale values are very low, as in non-existent, so it might be worth a try. I like the Swiss ones that are less popular names. I am a huge fan of Tissot, and this new Pesag is cool, and Bucherer is a cool less known brand.

Beautiful watch, Tybee, and great deal! Those kinds of watches are so classic. I have saved my mother's and MIL's watches. In fact, I wore the watch my mother had been wearing up until her death. It wasn't a mechanical watch, but it was still "vintage." The battery ran for years--far longer than it should have, and it always reminded me that my mother's spirit was still with me.
I don't wear old watches anymore. I'm too addicted to the ease and accuracy of digital watches, and as I've said before, I'm not a jewelry person. If I won a million dollars and started a list of what I wanted to do with that million, there wouldn't be any jewelry on that last.
My DD is different, and I'm happy about that, because I have someone to give my MIL's jewelry to. She worked in the jewelry department in Macy's for years, and picked up some very nice pieces. I don't deserve them as I don't value them, but my DD does.

How awesome is it that your DD can inherit her grandmother's jewelry!! I think of her Corelle wear blue and white china and can totally see her with a vintage watch. She has classic taste.

I have a self-winding Bucherer that works but I never wear. I wore it for years but it costs more to have it cleaned each year than to wear a watch with a battery.

Thanks. i looked at it, but I was thinking more of platinum and diamond vintage watches. Those seem to go for $500-$600. But I know nothing about watches so I’ll not be buying one and I know the bracelet thing even an expandable metal one wouldn’t work although I do, as I’m thinking about it now, wonder about some of those string type bands.
The string type would allow my skin to breathe and also might be tight enough to stay positioned.
But when you pay that much for something and then what if it stops working? I wouldn’t know what to do in that case.
Speaking of vintage watches. i believe we have quite an expert here among us, a serious collector.

Well, that was a chore. eBay has cloth bands but the trick for me was finding a 100% cotton one. I have two or three of them now and will never relinquish them.
EBay has many of them but they are partially polyester if not all polyester. I try to avoid those but I do think I tried one and it wasn’t too bad, especially in the winter.

I needed new eye glasses. I chose new frames at a chain franchise and asked about a special that was available in another location in the province. I was advised that a special of 2 for price of one would be available in a month in my area. I received the prescription, ordered the two pairs glasses and paid for them with my loyalty credit card. I spoke to my extended health benefit provider on coverage. Picked the glasses up yesterday.
Result - regular cost is $2200 for two pair of top of line lenses and frames. I had wanted a spare for years but couldn't justify the expense so used old glasses instead.
Actual cost to me - 2 for 1 special reduced the amount to $1100; insurance benefit of $600; loyalty CC special credit for optical service of $350 so my final cost for the two pair of glasses =$150.
I have had a hard time believing my good fortune and love the new glasses.

I know many people are buying them online, but I don’t know how you could achieve an exact fit that way. Perhaps those online buyers don’t have the kind of corrections I have.

Immensely beautiful, razz... thanks for sharing it.
I actually came to this thread to give an update on BIL. As you know, 2-3 years ago he took off for San Diego to spend his mother's money and try to hang on to his youth. He drank every day, threw his money around at the bars there, smoked, ate poorly and never looked for a job.
He came home after he had a serious health issue that landed him in the hospital with a diagnosis of heart failure. His ejection fraction was very low, he had a lot of edema, he was short of breath and could barely walk from the bar to his SRO.
When he came back to Jersey, he got a job as a cart boy at a golf course and has been living for a year and a half in a crappy hotel room! We tried and tried to talk him into renting an apartment, but he didn't want to sign a year lease. Instead he forked over $2500 a month for a room and a bed. He had another episode at the hospital where his EF was even lower--20%.
Without going through all the details in-between, he called us yesterday with a trifecta of good news: 1) after quitting smoking, drinking and getting into a work-out routine and structured cardiac rehab, his latest report from the cardiologist is that his ejection fraction is NORMAL. No edema, and blood pressure 112/87--his medication regimen has helped.
#2) His boss promoted him to supervisor at the golf course and gave him a raise.
#3) He found a house he's going to be sharing with another person in a beautiful area for only $850.
And they say miracles don't happen. I have to give him kudos for turning his life around--as they say, better late than never.
That is amazing to hear, Catherine. Great news.

Yes, and Jeppy is right, too. His safety nets were gone and he had to land on his own feet. But I think that what really, really motivated him was his own mortality. He knew that unless he shaped up the best case scenario was having to have an ICD implanted and worst case scenario, he would die.
Not to minimize what he did for himself, though. Lots of people are faced with shaping up or dying, and they choose death, so I'm really glad he was scared straight.

Thanks, catherine and rr. It is what it is. Age catches up to all of us eventually. I guess it is how we deal with the inevitable that is most telling. I know my mom is a good and kind person, choosing being "nice" over being "not nice". If we truly reap what we sow in this life, then I know she is on the positive side of things. I am hoping I can follow suit - nice over nasty, happy over angry, etc. I firmly believe THESE are the things we both take with us and leave behind for others. :)

This past week I had a “mini” stroke (TIA). Thankfully I have no brain or physical problems from it. My DS sent some pictures he had in his phone of me. It gave me a gist of how I will be remembered… very interesting.
Yikes! Glad you snapped back to normal.

Here is something nice:
My Neighbor across the street died recently at age 103. He was an old bachelor carpenter, his house was built in the 50s and he and his brother lived there together for decades until the brother died Sometime ago.
Another neighbor next-door to the old bachelor carpenter, Ray, pretty much looked after him in the past decade. Ray is our age. Within a couple of weeks after the bachelor Carpenter died at age 103, Ray put up his house for sale and move to his other house at Lake of the Ozarks. He’d really been hanging around here for the past few years to keep an eye on the old guy.
Isn’t that nice? Ray is divorced. He also happens to be a relative by marriage of one of my Daffodil Society friends.
so it was great that the old guy had somebody watching out for him.
unrelated to main point: Also I learned that Ray mowed the lawn two doors down from us in the house has been vacant for many years. I do not understand why relatives hang onto these houses that are vacant.
Houses are selling like crazy on our street, in fact Ray’s on house sold for $400,000. Thatis a lot of money for Hermann, in the city, if it isn’t a Victorian bed-and-breakfast Inn. It does have a couple of acres with it though.

So the house in Herman sold for 400k? Your post is confusing:)).
I think the point is, it's so nice that Ray actually held on to property just so he could continue to look after the old guy. Unusual these days to be so selfless. It is a nice story.

Well, my main point is Ray was watching out for the old guy.
As an aside, Ray’s house sold for $400,000. The old Carpenter guy’s house sold for something like one $175,000. Houses are selling before they hit the market on my block in Hermann.
So you can’t make sense of my rambling post? Ha ha Ha I don’t blame you. I edited to make it more readable.

Another nice thing is that the little old lady next-door, in her 90s, moved her self down to the assisted living place in town. She had been running the bingo nights there for a few years so she knows the people there and knows the place. She and her family decided she shouldn’t be living on her own, and this was soon after she put her little dog to sleep.
So these are rather nice end of life stories for the elders on my block.

Here is something nice:
My Neighbor across the street died recently at age 103.
That read like, Damn that's cold.....:laff:
My old family mechanic friend, took care of an old man he knew for decades. Guys wife had died in the 50's and they had no children (if I heard correctly, wife and child died in child birth).
He lived in a house with no a/c and refused to let the mechanic put one in, and lived just shy of his 96th birthday. Developed either dementia or Alzheimers, as before it was diagnosed, he got very lost and had driven quite a ways from home, was put into a home, and they saw he had skin cancer from his elbow to his shoulder and had been hiding it. He was in the home a week and passed.
Between the house, vehicle, life insurance and hands on money, he left my friend close to a million dollars.
As to why don't they sell family homes, there are several reasons from siblings fighting, out of sight, out of mind (incompetence), etc.

I don’t see anything about recognizing someone living a long life as cold, someone who is healthy until the very end, requiring only the neighbor next-door to check in on him regularly, take care of his car, and have a beer with several nights a week.
That is a life well lived.
As an opening sentence out of context, it doesn't sound very nice, but then of course it is rather nice in its entirety.
I bought a flat of pansies today and planted them in a couple of pots in front of my house. I will likely buy many more plants in the course of the spring and summer, but there is something special about potting up those first pansies!

Congrats! I love hanging out my laundry as well. Especially in the morning, when I can hear the birds.
Our neighbor has Guinea hens or keets...they are the noisiest and funniest birds I've ever watched. They race across our back yard into the meadow and just seem so determined to get where ever it is they aim yakking all the way! He said they eat ticks and snakes! So they are welcome to run in my yard whenever they want. I laughed for several minutes watching them
Just looked them up-keets are babies.

This was the plant I brought to my parents a year ago January 6, and when I picked it up in March from their room, it was five yellow sticks, no leaves. Same plant that was out in the garden last summer.
I think my dad sits in that room and reads at night. He always liked poinsettias and once, when down in the Keys, took a boat out to see the house of the guy who was a big deal in bringing them to the US.

I was told some time ago that the hummers return around tax day. It's always been an easy way to remember and watch for their arrival. My first showed up about a week ago. We have mostly Broad-tailed here.
Best thoughts with the fires. It's been a strange winter here with the winds and heat, but mostly the dry conditions. There are some pretty severe fire warnings for the next few days, but the big fire SE of Boulder put a scare into folks and the fire teams have scrambled to catch the smaller fires so far. There have been a couple of short lived evacuations not that far from front range towns.
Thank you all for the kind wishes. We had a very quiet anniversary, cold and windy out so inside most of the day until he grilled the steaks!! No hummingbirds yet, but a pileated woodpecker in full strut was looking for stumps....finally found the one that hasn't been removed yet. My patient husband lets them rot, then finally digs them out, so the woodpecker was a bit disappointed at two spots that had stumps last year!
It's been cloudy and rainy and cool here for the past week or so until yesterday when we had a glorious sunny day with a high of about 75*. It's a bit brighter than a star and travels faster than a plane, moving from horizon to horizon in just a matter of minutes. NASA also provides a schedule of possible sighting times here: ISS sightings over your city | Spot The Station | NASA (https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/sightings/index.cfm)

This is not really a Rave, just a little story:
In January and February 2021, I spent a lot of time looking at paintings for sale on eBay and on Etsy. I got hooked on paintings offered by Russian and Eastern European dealers. I guess maybe it was the snow scenes? The Ruskies know how to do snow—bleak but beautiful winter. Several of the ones I really liked were too expensive for me, but one was reasonable, a portrait of a Russian soldier.
This guy would be about my age since it was painted around 1970. There is something about him that captivated me, and I dont even like portraits very much. I kept going back to look at the painting, and finally, about a year later, I ordered it. It came from the Ukraine because it is by a now dead Ukrainian artist. As it turns out, he would’ve been a Ukrainian soldier in the Russian army.
It arrived about four weeks before Russia invaded the Ukraine.
so, now I have a Ukrainian solider here, a quiet but clear presence in my home.
the painting is by a reasonably well known (in the Ukraine) artist: Mordovets Andrey Nikitovich

For quite a while now, I have wanted to stop drinking alcohol of any kind. I was a very moderate drinker for years but just wanted to be out from under the habit. Ironically, it was a lingering tummy issue that led me to give it up. Another plus is that I have lost some weight by not having weekend wine/beer and snacks. It feels very liberating and I don't miss it at all.
Good for you pinkytoe. I am basically there too - maybe if I go to an event in the future I will have a glass of something but I don't buy any. The latest studies show cancers risks and that the supposed benefit of moderate drinking was a myth.
Pinkytoe, my husband has been tracking his sleep statistics and having alcohol in the evening, even if early, affects his deep sleep. He has months of data to support this. Just another thought. He gets the same number of hours but his deep sleep is affected.

Sigh. I miss my wine drinking days.
i now have a glass of wine about every two weeks. I may not continue this forever, but since I am watching calories and would rather eat than drink, it will be low alcohol consumption for me for a while longer. Snd no, I don’t notice any life improvement, just the opposite really!
Having quit smoking, no recreational drugs, etc. my wine is my vice of choice and I enjoy it. I only have a couple of glasses during the course of the weekend, though, as I won't drink alcohol during the work week.
I bought a bottle of brandy in March of 2020, at the start of the pandemic. I still have about 2/3 of it. Fortunately, booze has a long shelf life.

I quit drinking 2 years ago and it really helped with weight loss. My sleep is much better and I feel better in general.
Another benefit of zero alcohol that I can't quite describe is that I seem to be thinking more clearly. I am noticeably more focused on whatever I am doing. I did make a substitute though - one really spicy ginger beer soda a week:)

I love ginger beer! The spiciest I’ve found is Fever Tree. But I like Reeds the best.
My rave is that I had a stressful day which included three interviews—two never showed up and I had 8 clients listening. Plus I gave my beloved maple a haircut for safety reasons. The silver lining on that is the tree is actually a sugar maple and very strong! So now I’m sitting under it reading a book and listening to peepers, owls and a variety of birds. Bliss!

Wait--is that the iron bar?? :D
Haha nope. I was quizzing him last night about that iron bar and he claims he can saw through it and has used pieces of it over the years, and it is shorter than it once was. OK buddy whatever you say.
In Hermann, I had already envisioned a scenario where I drag DH in to talk to my physician with a prearranged lecture where she tells him about how One of the top causes of senior citizen death is a fall. I was not going to have a house in our old age with no handrail to the basement. I’m getting handrails in the bathroom I will be using most often.
to his credit DH has agreed to have a handrail to this basement in Hermann, his main logic being that with our walkout basement he has easy access to the basement and doesn’t have to rely on the stairwell to move large pieces of whatever up and down which was his excuse in the city. I will just mention that our city house DOES have access to the basement from outside as well as inside, so I think it was a poor argument but doesn’t matter now.

So, DH and I have been rushing around doing some house fixes prior to my NJ son coming up and my daughter's in-laws coming for a BBQ at our house. They haven't been here since the wedding.
After putting up my marigold wallpaper, we rearranged furniture, which left the entry wall bare and an unattractive electrical socket exposed. I knew I needed something in that small space.. a floating shelf or a very narrow console. I started looking at Target and Wayfair but they seemed so blah.
On the way to the supermarket the day before everyone came, I pulled out of our street and noticed that our neighboring antique shop was OPEN!! He was open twice last year. My car basically drove itself into the parking area, and I SCORED a walnut lectern!! $39!! I brought it home and then went back to my food shopping.
When I returned DH and DS had just returned from fishing, and I guess I got a seal of approval for the purchase, apparently, because I found DH thumbing through his fishing encyclopedia to find a great illustrative page of fishes and hooks--and after finding just the right one he set it up on the lecturn. DH approval! SCORE!
I love it! I love serendipitous discoveries!

I’m just tickled Pink! I just spent the evening selling Tupper- ware [yes, I know, and I did it on purpose]. I discovered 2 large bins full in my shed this afternoon, been working on decluttering and tidying in there:for a couple of hours daily this week. Remembering that it is highly collectible, I first checked eBay “sold” listings, then Marketplace for “asking” prices in my area, determining , yes, I had sought-after items. Actually posted on a Facebook page, thinking I’d come back later to see if I had had any responses… well! It was literally hours before I could get away from my computer. People were clamoring to Buy things. I had to learn the seller side of PayPal really quick. All in all, I’ve sold all but a couple of small items, and made, ready? $482!!! Selling Things I didn’t even remember I had! Buyers also paid shipping costs, so I had to look up those as I went along; those costs are not included in my total. Wow that’s a lot of money for Tupperware. Until 10 years ago I was still using it from the 80’s but then read that the plastic was toxic so threw it away.
Almost all of mine was from 1975-1985; anything before 1990 is considered “vintage.” People collect the stuff (apparently most don’t actually use it), and they paid me more per piece than I paid for it new- and it wasn’t cheap then! Shocking, really!
So glad I thought to check- I almost just took it all to the thrift store without even going through the bins. This morning I sold those huge bins (the biggest I’ve ever seen) to my neighbor for $50. He got a great deal and I got my space back. Pretty sure my brother dumped those on me, he’s forever telling me I’m “too frugal” and insisting I accept Large Items, LOL, I’ve sold and gifted lots of things he’s left here.

My vacation started great in Ireland with a friend of mine from high school. However, halfway through the trip I got Covid and told the tour guide. I got left behind in a rural hotel. The tour company cancelled my flight home and I had to quarantine for 8 days. It was stressful because I didn’t have my flight information until 2 days before I left and a driver secured until a day before. I was 4.5 hours from Dublin. Many others on the bus were sick but kept it to themselves because of what happened to me. I didn’t have Covid upon arrival so caught it from someone.
It was supposed to be a 11 day tour but you lose a day and a half to travel each way so really 8 days of sightseeing and I had 4.I will get a partial credit for another tour. I will find out next week how much of a credit. Ireland doesn’t have any restrictions but just guidelines. Unfortunately the county I got sick in had guidelines of 8 days in isolation instead of 5 like most of the country. It cost 5k but the travel company spent about 4 k between putting me up in a hotel, food, private driver to Dublin and airfare home. I booked with them because of their Covid promise and I also took the best travel insurance. Glad you had a good time Happy!!

Is this a rave or a rant? Who knows. Haha.
Yesterday I hatched a plan to move all of the orange daylilies that still live here in our Hermann Gardens to a place in our yard where it cannot be mowed. It’s too high of a hill and we’re not gonna mow it.
so, I asked myself, what would live there that won’t cost any money and that I simply won’t care about? And it occurred to me – those godawtul stupid FKING orange daylilies. I hate them. Roundup will not kill them. The deer eat all the flowers off so I never see any flowers even. But you know what? Their foliage will keep weeds down and I could dive in between any plants and hit weeds with Roundup because it’s not gonna hurt the stupid daylilies.
This might be a rave or a rant, but I will tell you that it is Personally embarrassing because I’ve said many times I will never plant orange daylilies. They’re the devil spawn. Nope, I would never ever in 1 million years plant those stupid FKING things.
You would think at my advanced age I would learn to never say “Never.”

Haha! I don't know what you have against daylilies, but the deer do love them. Their foliage is pretty dense and will definitely help keep the weeds down, so I think you're making a good decision! And good for them for being resistant to that FKIG Roundup!

Haha! I don't know what you have against daylilies, but the deer do love them. Their foliage is pretty dense and will definitely help keep the weeds down, so I think you're making a good decision! And good for them for being resistant to that FKIG Roundup!
Hemerocallis fulva are invasive everywhere in the United States. They are native to Asia.
I will admit that drifts of them CAN look fine when in full flower, but it is ridiculous to me that people actually dig them up and try to give them away. What a waste of labor. Our local plant exchange will not accept them.

Hmm.. I didn't realize they were not native, and in fact considered invasive. I was going to suggest to you a variety of milkweed to plant instead (I grow Asclepius incarnata), and here Asclepius tuberose recommended as an alternative to day lilies.

Funny, I have had the Orange Asclepius perennial and it didn’t survive into the next year, don’t know why. I think The pink one grows at our community garden and seems Hardy, but is not spreading. I need a full carpet of plants. perhaps I,could intersperse the daylilies and also Asclepius.
it is a hill with poor soil and I will not waste my time amending soil because I have way too much of that work to do elsewhere.
I have a variety of ground covers. I just planted them, didn't do anything else to them.

I think this is a rave: I came close to offering use of my condo for a month to one of the condo building’s residents who will be displaced during The Big Sewer Repair. I do not know this old guy except by sight. Before offering, I checked with our condo President to see if the old guy would be a decent temporary tenant (i was not going to charge him anything, of course. It was my good deed for the year.)
But our condo President said the old guy smokes in his own unit, and also has a little dog.
The dog I could handle, but um NO to a smoker in my perfect pristine tiny condo.
So i backed out of the idea, and the condo Prez thanked me profusely for my kind offer, and he agrees it would not be a good match.
so, this is a Rave because I get street cred for being a friend to the condo community but do not have to actually put myself out at all, a win/win. Our condo Prez really has no idea how rare it is for me to offer to help humans.

Haha!! Perfect! DH, always throwing offers of all kids out there to friends and strangers alike, feels the best thing is when you offer to do something for someone and they decline to take you up on it. I rarely roll the dice that way, but he always does and comes out smelling like a rose whether he fulfills his offer or not.

Another Rave:
In tooling around my tiny town of Hermann today I came across a newly opened fabric store. A FABRIC STORE! I distinctly remember the month the last fabric store within the city limits of St. louis, population 350,000, closed. So here my tiny town of 2,500 has a fabric store. Granted, the fabric is all for quilters and is all polished cotton, a type I never use. But it is still nice. it’s here because my tiny town is a tourist trap for groups of ladies. I don’t think it will be open a real long time, but who knows.
Also, Hermann has a brand new library just opened. I dont like the location at all, it osnt walkable. But the expanded collections, meeting rooms, and computers are nice. I used it this morning to print copies of several digital documents.
I offered to share my home with a co-worker (and her three children!) due to an abuse situation. Afterwards, I had this OMG! What have I done??? panic set in. Fortunately it didn't happen. She was a good person who didn't deserve the jerk. I lost track of her, but hope she eventually got free.
Out of curiosity, I looked up Hermann and it seems to be a lovely place, with hills and a river, and trees. Congratulations on your new home.

Probably I was subconsciously thinking of the little dog for my offer because who wants any dog to be homeless!
I like the old people in this condo building. There are several dogs, and some of the dogless people takes other people’s dogs for a walk. Now THAT is an act of kindness I could offer sincerely.

That is not a condo rule, that is the local gubmnt’s “ occupancy permit “rule. One-size-fits-all doncha know. The square footage of 530 sq ft is the limiting factor, apparently.
I pay no attention to this rule and the condo association pays no attention to it either. Our condo president and his wife lived in one of the 530 sq ft. units for a few years before they moved to a bigger unit in our building. It was their weekend place, same as us.
This sq ft per person city rule may be a newish thing since our real estate agent-friend says he had not heard of it prior to our condo. The city inspector measures each dwelling as part of his work now.

It was about a school board passing a budget.

well, this condo deal is back on. My condo will be used for 3 to 5 weeks by someone else who has been displaced due to sewer work in our 100 year old building. The guy has stopped smoking. He swears he will never have any more cigarettes. But I told the group that he needs to go out on the balcony if he gets the urge to smoke.
The condo president and vice president are managing his transition to my unit. They will be moving in his furniture (only two pieces) and will be covering my marble kitchen countertop. They said they will check in once a week to see how things look. I told him that relieves my mind greatly.
The only things I’m really concerned about being damaged is 1) marble countertops in my kitchen and 2) my pristine floor. It’s so happens that my temporary tenant’s little dog doesn’t like sliding around on shiny wood floors so he uses mats for the dog. That is perfect! The little dog is very old and is near death, so we don’t even know if he will still be alive in September when this deal happens.
I’m not charging him any rent. The condo Board is not charging me an HOA fee during the time he staying at my place.
I passed full cave! Very intense class!

DH fixed my red car, the convertible that we had stored for 9 weeks in the garage at my condo. It did not start up when we tried it after that long period of no use. Problem was not the battery. DH poked around on the internet to find discussion forums about this car and learned there is a tendency for the oil pump to dry up. He tried a couple of tricks, and one worked!
Now I just have to remember to start it up at least once a week. DH is brilliant!

Here’s one of the little projects DH is working on today: he’s rebuilding our old Victorian dining room table.
He is doing that in downtime while he’s waiting for stuff in the bathroom to either dry or to get supplies coming in.
Normally I wouldn’t mess with rebuilding an old piece of furniture, but I have a peculiar attachment to this dining room table which may be as early as 1860s. It’s a nice round shape but it also extends into a long oval to seat 8 or 10.
Here the table is today upside down with four of five legs in place and nearly ready to flip over to use as a table.

thank you. This table has been limping along for several years because one of the wheels fell off after we bought it and DH made a temporary fix for it. But now he’s doing a thorough fix so it can live into the next generation of owners beyond us.
I like this table because it is low, and it reminds me of the tiny people it was built for. People 150 years ago were smaller. It also is a wood that we can’t quite identify but it’s likely chestnut, and from what I understand Chestnut was a popular wood for furniture in the southern states 1860s to 1890s.

I echo nswef... so nice to bring a beautiful old table into modern day functionality! Someday I may be motivated to bring my twin tiger maple headboards/footboards to Connecticut where they actually conjoin the twins to make a queen. It would be an inconvenient, expensive project, but I feel that the end product would be worth it. It's beautiful wood and the beds have sentimental value. Maybe I could pay your DH to fly to the Northeast to do that for me? :).

haha no! But you’re in a part of the country where you can find people who can do stuff so you might not have to take them all the way to Connecticut. That’s an interesting concept (putting twin headboards together) , there are many nice twin beds going for a song because people don’t like twin beds anymore. I don’t really want a queen size bed myself, but that does put an idea in my head as I am bed shopping now, and I want something vintage or antique most likely.

When I was an account manager traveling a lot for research, I assigned project manager to go with me to Stockholm. When we booked rooms at a really nice hotel there, she was appalled that she would be sleeping in a twin bed. I told her that twin beds are common in European city hotels, but she tried in vain to find a place with a queen bed.
I truly don't understand how our expectations for comfort have gone so far afield. Suffering=twin beds and sharing a bathroom with a spouse. Wow.

The simplest thing I did recently was make long rice bags with flannel covers for the surgery unit at the spay/neuter clinic. The flannel covers are made so the outer layer can be washed. I made some a couple of years ago and they called requesting more saying how they were very useful. Got to the sewing machine and made up 20. Got the nicest card signed by all the surgery staff. Made my day. One year I collected leftover fleece from a variety of sources and made cage blankets to the size they needed. Simple and useful with little cost and a good reuse of leftover pieces of fleece.

I really like the way my window boxes turned out this year. I have 4 of them. Every year I try something different, but I think I like this one the best: there are deep purple petunias, yellow begonias, creeping Jenny, some kind of annual violet I've never seen before, and the coleus with little leaves. I am loving the color palette of purple, yellow and sage green. That's my theme for the whole yard.

Really pretty windowboxes Catherine. I do like that shade of green on your house.
How often do you have to water window boxes? Here they would have to be watered every day.
Catherine, they are beautiful. I have the same question as IL...I am an awful waterer so never do too well with annuals in planters...bad enough in the ground, so I truly admire lovely, lush boxes.
catherine
8-28-22, 12:01pm
Yes, I learned the hard way that you have to water them more frequently than anything else--including planters/containers. So I try to remember to wet the soil every day. Just long enough for the water to start dripping out through the drain holes. Petunias do have to be deadheaded otherwise they get very sparse and leggy. I hate that chore, so that's why I replaced most of the petunias with begonias this year.
I also learned that if it rains, I'm not necessarily off the hook for watering. The eaves are not big at all, but big enough to divert the rain water from the boxes.

DH tested positive this morning for Covid. He got sick Friday night, has been laying low with a fever and headache and cough runny nose, but yesterday he felt good enough to get on the riding mower and mow our 1 acre. So I think he’s going to come out of this OK. He was not vaccinated. He had none of the comorbidities though other than being old at 67.
So, I am happy because we survived Covid. I am fine although I have very slight intestinal stuff for a couple of days but I do not know if that was related to Covid or not.
A friend's husband and daughter both survived it in the last few weeks. I'm glad your husband is on the other side of it.

IL covid has evolved to get milder and milder so his experience, while not fun, fits this pattern. A while back I told the Library Trustees other libraries didn't have mask mandates and the sky did not fall. Next I am going to tell them about lockers, which I saw at another library. You go the outdoor locker at any hour of day or night and pick up the library materials you ordered. It's like picking up an online order from Home Depot. If you are nervous you do that instead of forcing everyone in the building to wear masks.
Glad your DH is OK, Iris.
