Ok, I've roamed high and low and I don't know what's wrong. I know this would be better suited for a computer forum, but someone here always seems to have intelligent help without the attitude, so ....

I decided to start a blog at wordpress, in a somewhat backward fashion; I want to write a journal offline using blog-friendly software and then use the published (but private) wordpress site to back it up.

Let me say that I have no attachment to Wordpress or Windows Live Writer, these are the two elements that were suggested. I'd be happy to start over with different sites and software if someone is doing this successfully with something else. I'm running on Windows 8.1.

I downloaded Windows Live Writer, and it wants to link up with the wordpress site. Fine. we get to a screen that says, insert blogname

http://<blogname>.wordpress.com/xmlrpc.php

I trade out kiblog for <blogname>:

<http://kiblog.wordpress.com/xmlrpc.php>

I get the message:

Network Connection Error Moved Permanently: Moved permanently.

I have tried inserting @, inserting www, cancelling the xml business at the end, to no avail.

The help I have found says the older versions of wordpress required you do something to manually enable the remote component, but the newest version doesn't require it. I find no way to change that setting on wordpress. Wordpress itself has a handy useless tutorial that has me inserting the blogname into that exact pathline that Writer is asking for. Which doesn't work.

Any clue??? Is Writer 2012 not compatible with the latest version of Wordpress? Am I just missing a comma or a period?

Prior to getting into possible remedies, are you sure the blog url is correct? http://kiblog.wordpress.com resolves to an already established, older blog which may have the remote posting functionality turned off. If the kiblog url is just an example, I'll give you a few suggestions.

I was just using that as an example because I wasn't thrilled about posting my private blog address online. I'll PM you the address.

>8) Ok, read too fast. Now you have my blog address, so you can amuse yourself at will. :~)

What do you think I'm doing wrong?

Is what you're trying to do any easier than just writing in Word or whatever other program and just copying and pasting the whole thing into a Wordpress post? Or you could use one of the various cloud storage systems to back up your writing, unless you want to let some people see what you've written, as a Wordpress post?

I'm just wondering if there's a simpler way to accomplish the same goal.

Your blog is set to private so I was unable to view without a valid login, which is part of your initial problem. You’ll need to temporarily change that setting to be able to add it successfully in Windows Live Writer. You should be able to accomplish this by logging into your Wordpress dashboard and navigating to Settings > Reading.

After successfully setting up Live Writer, return to your dashboard to set it back to private and then make a test post to ensure all is right with the world.

Ah, of course, that makes total sense! Brilliant, thank you. Worked like a charm.

Kestra, not really, the whole point was setting up the diary in blog format with links and pictures, and having online access with tags. Also serving as practice for if I ever decide to do a public one. I've been journalling and backing it up for 22 years, I wanted a more up to date format and internet interface

... 22 years with Word Perfect is probably long enough, if it were a baby it would have moved out by now. :|(

Oh, I understand now. That's actually a really interesting idea. I may incorporate some of that into my own journalling.
