My plan has consistently been to retire at 60. I just turned 58 on May 20. Work is getting progressively more stressful this year and I've been on the edge multiple times the past 2 months. This week progressed with more issues. It's not a good time to leave but I'm putting myself first. I've had poor sleep 3 nights now and I feel like I'm at the edge of my sanity and I don't want to tip over into another thyroid crisis (what spurred me to leave the last corporate job in 2001).

At breakfast this morning, I told hubby I wanted to resign on Monday. He is in full support. We have no debt. I paid cash for my C300 in 2016 so I'm set for life on transportation. I have funded retirement well, I can start drawing my pension at 59 1/2 and we have a 6 figure emergency fund.

I'm jumping! I'm so happy about it. I just keep taking big deep breaths-have been all day. I will work 5 more weeks (28d is required for leadership anyway). Working a day in August gets my health insurance for the month. I'm going to schedule a colonoscopy and a wellness checkup in August since those are fully paid under wellness care. I just had a full dental visit w/xrays and cleaning so I'm good there.

So August 2 it is!

How wonderful for you! What will you do for health care after August?

Deja Vu! I retired last August 1st and had a colonoscopy on August 3rd. Except for that prep part, every subsequent day has been heaven. Enjoy!

Until we get universal healthcare, hubby is working, or we hit Medicare (we are 9d apart). He continues to love his work so he will insure me. The plan for quite a while is that I would work until 60 just padding retirement accounts so I'm jumping 22 months early but we'll be fine.

If he decides he's had it early? We can afford health insurance.

The best reward for a long, fraught working life is escape from it. Your retirement will be restorative.

We er'ed in 2013 at 55/61 and did not regret anything so far.

Hearing some of these stories fills me with gratitude for my own life trajectory. Just retired from a job I generally liked with a decent, fully funded, pension. Moved to a lower cost area in a nice little city and renovated a downsized house to our liking. Just accepted a job with a small nonprofit that should be less demanding but perhaps more fulfilling than the old one.

Unless some disaster occurs, we will be perfectly happy running down the clock right where we are. Planning helped somewhat, but I can’t help being struck by how important dumb luck has been in my life.

You are ready and it’s not worth ruining your health over by working a few more years. Enjoy!

Thank you all for your support and encouragement.:thankyou:

I did it! I resigned and I only gave the required 28 days notice. Not giving the extra week. I've gifted my employer enough hours in 9.5 years of salaried work. They probably "owe' me about 3000 hours so I'm not gifting them an extra week! Yesterday, I started teaching staff some of things I do because "I'd love for you to learn this"....so far they are biting!...evil aren't I? And I'm clearing my in-process projects to hopefully leave a clean office. Clearing out old files that no longer apply to my book of business. etc etc. Today I'll be copying some non-proprietary items that I've always had at work instead of home. My ethics are intact>8)

I've told my siblings and a dear peer at work and that's it. Well, and ya'll cyberpals were first after hubby and I discussed. My boss wants some time to make some plans and I told her I am fine waiting until my July 19 staff meeting to go public. Then I would only have to deal with whining for 8d.:~) My busiest and newest surgeons weren't born yet when I started my career in surgery.:D and they've been begging me to work until our new facility opens fall 2021 which is 6m after my planned age 60 retirement.
It is exhilarating:cool: So yes, let the countdown begin. I have PTO scheduled noon tomorrow through July 8. So, 15.5 days left! It's all about me baby!

That’s great news! Sometimes we need to just look out for ourselves.
