View Full Version : Please explain this to me
Best little car I've ever owned, to date, was a 2000 Plymouth Neon that we literally bought from the little old lady that went to our church. Took it to our mechanic for a once-over before purchasing and they were surprised to see that the front windows were electric and the back windows were crank!
My 2014 Ford Focus is like that. This is the first time I've heard of another car with this feature!

Mine are hand crank, not "no crank" whatever that means!

That was not terribly uncommon, especially among lower-priced cars. It got "power windows" on the marketing sheets without having the expense of putting motors and switches on all four windows.
I have to say, I like power windows except when I want to leave a window open just a quarter-inch or so to let the interior dry out (melte slush, etc.). Then they're a pain. 90% of the time, though, they're one of the things I never needed until I had them (up there with a garage door opener and central air conditioning).

[QUOTE=Rogar;352449]Here's a few questions I've pondered.
Why do you saute onions first when they will go into a dish that is going to cook anyway.
Why do celebrities who most likely are well set with millions and millions endorse cheesy products. Like William Shatner, former Commander of the Starship Enterprise promoting CPAP cleaning machines machines, or Joe Namoth selling reverse mortgages, or Alex Trebek and life insurance.
Is forcing some businesses and public areas closed due to CV-19 risk really against the constitution, or is that just something the protesters totally fabricate.[/QUOTE
]
I cant speak about other celebrities but Mr Shanter does have a horse habit and shows his horses... And as a life long horse person who also shows horses … Its a very expensive endeavor. so that might be the reason for his "side hustle" . NFL star Terry Bradshaw is also into horse and showing in the big leagues too and has been in a few commercials too. I have a "side hustle" too but no one is asking me to endorse anything right now !Splat!
Or maybe its to keep them occupied so they don't become OCD about their lawns

This could go in a rant thread.
I cannot find 1 gallon baggies, food baggies, that have no closing tops. I want the kind that you close with a twisty tie.
All I can find now in stores are zipper closures and pinch closure bags.
How much more does it cost to make these stupid closures? I don’t want them.

Why does Air b n b software, and apparently Vrbo software, not support a Zip code search?
what is the thinking there, software development peeps?
Seems to me the most logical thing in the world for me, as a user, to make my geographic location search a ZIP Code.
When I type in the name of any town such as Galena, Illinois, I get results that include Dubuque, Iowa. Same experience for Locating accommodations in Portsmouth New Hampshire, I get nearby places, too.
No. I want downtown accommodations in these places, I do not want places I can easily drive from.
I ordered the same book from 2 different places and they both sent me something totally different. The ISBN codes are not even similar! UGH!

Is there something you want explained to you? That’s what this thread is about.
Why does Air b n b software, and apparently Vrbo software, not support a Zip code search?

I suspect it is some combination of:
1) many renters having no idea of the ZIP code in the area they're considering (many smaller towns have just one ZIP code, but in a multi-ZIP area, you can't find the right ZIP code without a specific address);
2) an opportunity for AirBnB/VRBO/whoever to charge lodging owners for the privilege of either raising their location's ranking in the search results or offering site user something on the order of "People who liked Galena also like Dubuque"); and
3) developers who've never actually used the software beyond test cases which were handed to them.
tl;dr: Assumptions. Not the best ones.

I suppose you are right Steve.
I am so accustomed to searching the real estate for sale and rental sites with the ZIP Code. So that’s my first go to when I’m doing Airbnb because I want to stay downtown. I do not want to stay in a suburb or on the edge of downtown or god forbid in another town to drive to the town I want to stay in.
I am a capable adult who can broaden my search if, for instance, my first point of searching, a ZIP Code, doesn’t yield any hits.
I’m going to write to Airbnb about this.

The common cold is a coronavirus and a cure has never been found for it. It also mutates, as does the flu, which is why a flu vaccine might only be 40% effective, say, in a given season. Please explain to me why a covid-19 vaccine will stop the virus, which is already mutating to make itself more transmissible.

I don’t know, but I’m with you that I’m hearing skeptical voices that a Vaccine will save us all.
There are coronaviruses that dogs get but I don’t understand the science of it and there are vaccines for them.
They have determined that this is a slow mutating virus. That is the only hope we have right now. W hope for a vaccine, organize our lives to protect our vulnerabilities, and/or simply deal with the death and long term damage. The good news is that children do not have the "receptors" to create most of the serious illness. Not sure when in the early teens it changes.
I'm skeptical of a vaccine, for the reasons you mentioned--along the lines of "Why can't we cure the common cold?" I've never had a flu shot, for one reason because they rarely seem to target whichever strain is going around. It's hard to hit a moving target.

well there are other ways to handle it besides just stay at home and get a vaccine, even though an effective vaccine or truly effect therapeutic is EVERY country's ultimate dream, as other ways of handling it are costly and imperfect (test, trace, quarantine, isolate, sometimes mask in public (depending on if any cases still exist) AND in some cases rolling shut downs, not permanent shutdowns, but when a bunch of cases appear). That's part of why we aren't allowed in other countries, you think they want some U.S. tourist to mess things up and cause another shut down with all that entails, just because we are some huge disease reservoir, I don't think so. Of course in the EU it's political if a country is letting Sweden in because they are also a disease reservoir.
But we live in a failed state so all we can do is hope for a miracle. Failed policies have led us to this. So go science! All in for the techno-solution! I mean it, since public health has failed, we can hope for it to stop failing but Trump is at the helm, dealing with the virus is the only thing that might help his reelection but he's too dumb to even realize it, we can hope for people of this country to bring R below 1 and keep it there with near perfect mask use and distancing all on their own with little government support beyond a few state mandates, but that's somewhat of a hail mary pass as well, so almost all we have is hope for a cure.

When I have listened to jazz, I have really enjoyed the sounds that are gentle harmony but the discord that other people really love to hear, drives me out of the room. The Atlantic recently did a story on this phenomena, the 1500 or so word love letter basically boiled down to "the world could use a little positivity". I never heard anyone complaining about his hair.. just as I never heard anyone complaining about Anne Lamotte's dreads (although I personally feel they're a little too 'look at me'--I don't consider it inappropriate cultural appropriation).
I think the reason Bob Ross is so popular these days is the same reason we have fallen in love again with Fred Rogers. There’s no accounting for taste, but I think good art should be a little challenging. That’s why I’m not that fond of YA literature or adult coloring books. That’s why I prefer Art Blakey, Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young over the listless murmurs of smooth jazz or soft rock, and am glad such tripe peaked in the seventies.

What are two examples of a traditional jazz artist and a smooth jazz artist that would clearly help differentiate the two for an unlearned listener?

I’m not a fan of jazz, and actually find much of it hard to follow. But I understand distain for smooth jazz, it is dull.
R &B seems to me to be a pleasant, relatable, child of jazz that is its own thing and doesn’t corrupt the original, as does smooth jazz.
But you may NOT dis “YA literature” as one monolithic body of writing. I think you do not really know of what you speak! If you are thinking of the Twilight series or Hunger Games, well, sure, but those are no different than half the adult novels on the NYT bestseller list.
Also, in case you are thinking of graphic novels in this put down, there are some seriously great works where the visual storytelling is essential to the work. Not all of it is comic book-seque.
I enjoyed YA novel Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry which I read recently and recommend it.

I would highly recommend Bob Blumenthal’s book “Jazz” for an understanding of the subject.
It’s hard for a humble fan like me to really articulate what the difference is between good and bad. I think it was Thelonius Monk who said something like talking about music is like dancing about architecture.

I still have human contact with people via face-to-face social distancing, talking over the phone, virtual contact... it's there. Things DH told me: When I ask him why we don’t hear about people committing suicide by carbon monoxide in their garage with the car running, he said it’s because modern cars have catalytic converters (or maybe it was another mechanical thing ) and don’t put out those emissions.
Is this right? If one is so inclined to commit suicide that method always seemed the best to me.During the recent Texas cold snap fiasco a mother and daughter accidentally killed themselves by sitting in their idling car in their closed garage. Temps were constantly sub-freezing for several days and they didn't have any heat in their house because of prolonged power outages, so apparently they turned to the car as their best chance to warm up for a little while, and it killed them.
So in answer to your question: DH is wrong. The catalytic converter changes hydrocarbon gases and carbon monoxide into approximately 71% nitrogen gas, 14% carbon dioxide, and 13% water vapor. Your lungs can't extract oxygen from any of those three gases. So the enclosed space fills up with those three gasses and the car engine sucks in whatever good air there is because it needs oxygen to run. That leaves you with no breathable oxygen, and that causes you to get fuzzy, pass out, and die.
IMHO it is probably easier to accidentally kill yourself by running a car in a closed garage now than it was 50 years ago because the exhaust fumes don't smell as bad or as strong, so you don't get the obvious warning that you're breathing dangerous air.
And since "It’s just an intellectual exercise!" I will add that doing this is probably not the best way to kill yourself because if you are found and rescued you might survive and spend the rest of your life mentally impaired by your brain being deprived of oxygen for too long during your suicide attempt.
BTW: have you ever seen the movie Harold and Maude? I'm not recommending it, just asking if you've seen it.

I've read in several places (books, internet, etc.) that, truth be told, there are only five basic needs: Clean Air, Water, Nutrients, Shelter and Sleep."Nutrients" can be expressed more simply and accurately as "food". Scientific efforts to replace food with nutrient packets have repeatedly failed long-term, because what we need to survive and be healthy is the whole complex matrix of fruits, veggies, etc and science hasn't figured out yet what all the nutrients we need are, or in what specific combinations, let alone how to create a nutrient pill that replicates the total contents of a carrot or pear.
The need for "Shelter" is really just a need for something that insulated us from cold weather, hot sun, wild animals, and physical objects like large hail. For all intents and purposes, a warm waterproof coat would be as good as a house most of the time, although you might have to sleep in a tree to avoid carnivorous predators.
And without shelter "sleep" would often be difficult or dangerous because you could die from hypothermia or be attacked by wild beasts while you were asleep. That means you would probably do more dozing than sleeping, which would be bad for your mental and emotional health, but it probably wouldn't kill you.

Here is my question for the day:
How can Reddit be worth $3 billion when it hasn’t turned a profit? The headline news I just googled said that Reddit did not turn a profit in 2019 and hasn’t since its inception.
I am a big Reddit user. It is an old fashion platform that is text based. I don’t see ads if they’re there, it doesn’t host photos for the most part Although its sister site, IMGUR, will host an image and videos that link on Reddit.I just don’t understand how something like Reddit is valued.
Likewise, I remember year after year after year of Amazon not turning a profit and I wondered how Amazon survived. Jeff Bezos started out selling books because the built in stock control and product ID System of ISBN Coupled with the ease of shipping books ( no breakage no weird packaging) Made books an attractive product for him to start with.

How can Reddit be worth $3 billion when it hasn’t turned a profit? The headline news I just googled said that Reddit did not turn a profit in 2019 and hasn’t since its inception. You're confusing "turning a profit" with "making money". Rest assured everyone associated with Reddit is making money, they're just making sure it doesn't show up on their balance sheet as taxable income.
Quoting From https://www.comparably.com/companies/reddit/salaries
How much do people at reddit get paid? See the latest salaries by department and job title. The average estimated annual salary, including base and bonus, at reddit is $124,430, or $59 per hour, while the estimated median salary is $151,311, or $72 per hour. At reddit, the highest paid job is a Director of Engineering at $192,116 annually and the lowest is a CS Rep at $55,209 annually. Average reddit salaries by department include: Customer Support at $71,297, Business Development at $112,081, Product at $132,324, and Marketing at $192,539. Half of reddit salaries are above $151,311.
You're also confusing market value with actual value. That $3 billion is what investors were willing to pay for it based on their belief it will be worth more than that in the future. Wikipedia has a more complete overview of the various prices Reddit has been worth as it was bought and sold various times.

In the woodlot, is a coppice considered one tree (one root with more than one trunk growing out of it) or a number of trees with a shared root system?
Well, people have been harvesting coppices for firewood for years but with great forethought and planning to ensure a steady supply of harvestable trunks from each tree, IMHO. Good question.
I thought “coppice” was the verb for cutting down to the roots, and “copse” was the noun for the grove maintained for that purpose.
I thought a coppice was the group of trees, cut back. Not one, not a verb? I think a copse is just a group of trees.

I hope Catherine sees this post, but I’m sure others will have the answer to my naïve question.
When you fly first class and business class, and you have access to those first class/business class lounges, do you have to pay for the food in those places? I mean I assume that you do but I have to ask.
In these Covid times when I’m not flying anywhere but would really like to go to Europe, I’m looking at the cost of first class and business class to Europe. There’s no way I would pay first class prices. I could maybe pay business class. The thing that’s important to me is having a level of privacy and room in the long flight.
I do not care about all of the other dumb perks such as early check-in, unlimited baggage, access to the posh lounges, Board when you want to, free drinks including champagne, better food served, get off the plane first. None of those have appealed to me and I would not pay extra for them. But man, the idea of lying down and stretching out to sleep for a few hours is pretty good.
No, once you are in the lounges, you get free food, free booze (except for premium brands), free newspapers, free wifi--pretty much everything is free. The food isn't meals of course--it's usually soups, salads, sweets, stuff like that.
It's awesome. I have paid for the airline lounge for United for years, and it's one of those experiences that has unfortunately grown from a luxury to a necessity.

Hunh! Ok then.
You get free Wi-Fi in the airports I’ve been in, in recent years. certainly many years ago that wasn’t the case tho.

Yeah, true, wi-fi is no big deal anymore, but it used to be, and it was also nice that I could just open my computer and go. No signing in to different 3rd party wi-fi sites in every airport.

I have another airplane question: what does “airplane mode” on my IPad device really do?
It turns off all wireless communications capabilities such as bluetooth, WiFi and cellular.
It turns off all wireless communications capabilities such as bluetooth, WiFi and cellular.
Yes, although you can turn wifi back on so that you can use the airplane's wifi. If you want full internet it's absurdly expensive unless you are traveling for work and can charge it to your expense account, but a number of airlines allow free texting over apps like iMessage.
We flew business class thru Toronto to Japan and then flew bus class to Paris. The lounges were spectacular especially Paris. As expected the food was amazing and constantly refreshed. I do search for the lowest airfare and, if you can find one, a good travel agent is a blessing (although I do my own). Dont care much for US lounges as they do not seem to have the same level of quality as overseas (just like the flights).
I do not think anyone really needs first class unless they are a celebrity and really need the total privacy. Business was comfortable enough that I slept almost all the way back from Japan. I did take my own pillow which I do most anywhere.
Today I am not comfortable making concrete travel arrangements due to the constant shifting sands of Covid. Not sure if we will travel overseas until 2023, if then.
seatguru.com gives really good info on the airline seats with comfort levels and arrangements. Also says which ones are bad and which are the best.

The best flight I've ever had was in business class on Japan's airline, ANA, from JFK to Tokyo. My pictures didn't capture the look of the seats, so here is an article that pretty much shows where I spent half a day in luxury up in the air. https://www.godsavethepoints.com/review-all-nippon-ana-business-class-777-300er-the-room/
Attached is a picture of the menu and food.
I agree, sweetana, many of the non-US airlines are far superior when it comes to business class.

Here’s my question for the day: why don’t grocery stores package grapes in smaller packages? All those giant packages seem to have two or 3 pounds worth of grapes.
Only in recent years the DH show me that you can open one of those packages get a baggie and put your own smaller amount of grapes in them. But then the checker doesn’t know which grape you’ve got so you have to tell them.
I just don’t believe that people buy those giant bags of grapes.
Please explain this to me. Why does my city say if you don't wear a mask in a municipal building you will be fined $300 but when I report two city employees in city hall not wearing masks they are not fined but just spoken to? Why does a poor person living in public housing where masks are mandated in hallways and other common areas have to pay a fine but the city employees who are the highest paid residents in the city not have to pay?
And why do police reform efforts not tackle cops fixing tickets for themselves and their friends?
Why do governors order mask mandates including outdoors in the woods walking by yourself yet indoors at news conferences take off their own masks so they will look good on TV?
Why are the people who govern us so pathetic?

Why don’t you apply your microscopic vision to my question about grapes.

Of course you can put the grapes in a smaller package. I often tear some bananas off rather than take a whole bunch. This only works with things where you are paying by the pound rather than by the container.

Yes! Bannas. I do that with bananas but I was always intimidated by the grapes because the grapes are in their own package.

I open two bags and fill one sometimes to overflowing and take the bag with the amount of grapes I want. That way nothing has to be looked up because the type of grape is on the package.
ETA.. the price is determined at the checkout based on weight so there is no conflict by dividing up bags.

This is a good method. I had not thought about filling up another bag and taking what I want in one of the commercial, barcoded bags.

BTW: To understand the joke, a kid would have to be familiar with Winnie the Pooh and also be old enough to understand why this riddle is naughty. I'd say 5-8 yo is the prime audience.

If you want us to get back on topic, I'll oblige. However my question is rated PG-13.
Why do women wear swimsuits that are 1/4 this size in front, or sometimes much smaller, and cover almost nothing in back?
3925
Yeah, Yeah, I know.... They do it to attract guys. But surely women realize the kind of guy who would start making small talk with a woman he doesn't know just because she's wearing an ultra-skimpy swimsuit isn't the kind of guy she wants to attract?
Personally, speaking as a guy, I find the size of that blue swimsuit very alluring. It's big enough to leave something to the imagination, and just small enough to reveal a little too much, but it's most interesting aspect is the possibility the sloshing water will make it accidentally slide down while she's bouncing around in the surf.
And now that I've offended all the women on this forum by asking that question, shall we return to silly jokes?

The description says, "To all the girls that don't think they're good enough. You are!"
Why only girls? Yes the main character is a girl, but why do little girls need to be told they're perfect more than boys? I recognize the pressures and traumas that set in during the tweenage years (boys have them too!) but both boys and girls need to be told they're perfect every year while they're growing up.

I have seen clips in the news or elsewhere of European beaches with men of all ages and sizes donning tiny Speedos or similar with little material. At least it will save some synthetic plastics going to the landfill compared to more modest apparel.

BTW please can the "nazi" crap. It's obviously over the top and demeaning to anyone who happens to hold a different opinion -- including me. The rule used to be that in any discussion the first person who calls their opponents nazis or compares them to Hitler, automatically invalidates whatever point they were trying to make and automatically loses the argument. We ought to bring that rule back in full force.

Yes, the size of the target audience and their willingness to buy this book (and the ones related to it) definitely influences what gets published and marketed. But I think all the little boys who are embarrassed to wear a swimsuit or undress in front of other boys because they're skinny, chubby, weak, too tall, too short, too freckly or whatever deserve equal consideration and consolation. Maybe that's because I was one, but IMO there ought to be an equal book series for boys, and I didn't find one in my casual search of book titles.

You bring up an interesting point. Generally the only clothing optional beaches in the US are on federal lands. State and local jurisdiction beaches pretty much all require a piece of cloth over one’s crotch. Similarly during the early lockdowns the only hiking trails in my area that weren’t mask mandatory were on federal lands. Trails that are under local or state jurisdiction did require them.
There are non Federal beaches where the clothing law is not enforced.
My only attempt at skinny dipping ended badly. I was in college with a group of other college women and we went to a pond. After we were done swimming we got out. We were wet so didn't want to put our clothes back on so we were carrying them. It was pitch black and we figured no one could see us. So we're walking along the trail and we hear people coming and jump in a ditch to hide. It was filled with mud and my clothes were white. Despite numerous attempts I never could get them clean.

I am reviving this thread because I have a sincere question, and I want someone to explain it to me, preferably, Alan or Ldahl.
Joe Biden put into place new mortgage rate rules for government loans. That is all fine and within his purview as President of the United States even though I do not agree with his methodology.
What I cannot figure out from the various reports, and I read a couple of them, is how ot really works.
so here’s my question:
in a theoretical instance where there are two mortgage borrowers borrowing $200,000, and Borrower A has a credit rating of 780, and Borrower B has a credit rating of 585, will Borrower A pay more in mortgage fees than Borrower B?
in a theoretical instance where there are two mortgage borrowers borrowing $200,000, and Borrower A has a credit rating of 780, and borrow or be has a credit rating of 585, will Borrower A pay more in mortgage fees than Borrower B?As I understand it, Borrower A may or may not pay higher mortgage fees than Borrower B, it will now depend upon a variety of factors such as credit score, loan to value, debt to income and loan purpose, etc., which can change a borrower's basis points by 100 or more.
In a theoretical estimation I saw from a mortgage broker online, someone applying for a $400,000 mortgage with a credit score of 740 and 20% cash down payment would see their fees increase from around $2000 to about $3500. Someone applying for the same mortgage amount with a credit score of 640 and 3% cash down payment would see their fees decrease from around $11,000 to about $6,000. A borrower with a credit rating in the 500's may see their fees decreased even more as there seems to be a matrix involved that scores those borrowers in order to come up with an appropriate fee, although I've not seen it published anywhere.
So, Borrower A wouldn't necessarily pay more in mortgage fees than Borrower B, but would certainly be paying more in order to subsidize Borrower B. It's called a loan level pricing adjustment, but it's historically been better known as Robbing From Peter To Pay Paul.
I enjoy a credit rating in the mid 830's. If I were Borrower A in the theoretical I mentioned, I wonder how much higher my increase might be?

oh I agree that Biden has changed the formula so that more responsible people are now shouldering a bigger percentage
of the loan costs than they paid in the past. I wanted to see if they are paying in actual dollars more now than the less responsible people.
It both theoretical borrowers have exactly the same metrics (same down payment, same loan to value etc) it seems from your explanation that the responsible guy will still pay less, based entirely on his credit score.
Thanks! I do not like this shift of course but what are ya gonna do? It could be worse, those with better credit s ores could be penalized in actual dollars.

I had several questions this week, but I couldn’t find this thread, and now I forgot my questions. I’ll probably think of them again.

This is an idle question probably no one here has the interest in it, but I’ll give it a try:
Can anyone give me a way to think about Mercedes-Benz car models that allow me to sort out the logic of all their letters and numbers? I cannot make sense of the Way they name models of cars.
just when I think I’ve identified the Mercedes-Benz I really like and might consider buying in the future, it seems to go away. And then there’s a whole slew of new models with new confusing class letters and numbers and suffixes.
It seems like such a Boys’ Club, Mercedes Benz dealing.

D in the number means diesel.
From Mercedes Benz:
S-Class: “Special” Slass (from the German word “Sonderklasse”)
E-Class: Executive Class (denotes mid-size car models)
C-Class: Comfort Class (denotes compact car models)
A-Class: No historical meaning (but refers to sub-compact and hatchback model)
G-Class: Off-road vehicles (from the German word “Geländewagen”)
CLA-Class: Refers to an A-Class based coupe design
GLB-Class: Refers to a B-Class (not sold in Canada) based design
GLA-Class: Refers to an A-Class based lightweight SUV
GLC-Class: Refers to a C-Class based compact SUV
GLE-Class: Refers to an E-Class based mid-size SUV
GLS-Class: Refers to an S-Class based SUV with the finest the brand has to offer
The numbers typically reflect the gasoline engine displacement or performance level, providing a glimpse into the car's capabilities. For example, a Mercedes-Benz E 350 would suggest a model from the E-Class with a 3.5-liter engine.

Hmmm, ok thanks but It is not shedding light on the thing I’m looking for. There’s a really hot looking sporty car that is gorgeous, I was thinking it is “CLK” But maybe not. Then there’s that little sports car they stopped making about 2017, I had my eye on that one for a long time.
Then there was the SLK’s (?) sport cars of yesteryear. Is still very confusing. so maybe it is a S car, the ?special car.
But if you want me to explain Girl’s Club stuff to you such as diamond grading, I would be happy to tell you what G VVS2 means in the GIA world.

I believe they changed/updated their naming conventions around 2016 or so and what I posted above only relates to current models. I remember the SLK, SLA and several other models but have no idea how some of those models correlate to current. Sorry...and let's not even get into the AMG, Maybach and current EV models.

You mention the AMG, and I think that’s the one I saw in a parking lot that made me want it.

AMG's are basically customized, high performance versions of otherwise stock Mercedes models. It's a mystery to me how AMG's model names relate to the Mercedes models they're based upon.
Excellent explanation.
Now explain to me how they come up with drug names. They seem to be completely randomized collections of letters to me.

I don’t know about drugs, but please explain to me why this appliance manufacturer chose THIS unsavory name:
Smeg
all I can think of is the —ma version.

Reminds me of that old SNL sketch: “With a name like Nosehair, it has to be good “.

, I’m the last one to ask for tech help especially for our phone because I hate my phone.
But what do you mean by it doesn’t ping?
I had a problem where my texts went through only to Apple users. If they were not Apple users, they did not get my text. Is that the problem you’re having?
now my texts will not ping.
If you mean that your phone will no longer alert you with an audible tone when you receive a text, go to Settings-Notifications-Messages, tap Sounds and choose which alert tone you prefer. You may have accidentally set it to None.
If that's not what you mean please explain and we'll figure it out for you.

Wow! You are good Alan! Evidently I turned off notifications. Thank you!

Elon Musk’s space ship rescued stranded astronauts a couple of weeks ago. There wasn’t much in mainstream news about it, maybe half a day’s story.
I’ve heard a mainstream media source explain slowly and carefully to those of us who are stupid conservatives that the astronauts were neither “rescued “nor had they been “stranded. “
Yet my general knowledge of this event was the astronauts went up for a short time and for some reason were not able to come back at the planned time, they had to wait for a longer period until another spaceship could go fetch them, but that wasn’t happening yet.
Could someone explain to me why these astronauts were not “stranded?” Is it because there was a plan from the United States space agency to go get them it’s just that the timing wasn’t right yet?
the whole thing just seems so odd to me.
I’ve heard a mainstream media source explain slowly and carefully to those of us who are stupid conservative that the astronauts were neither “rescued “nor had they been “stranded. “
As I understand it, they were indeed "stranded" just not in a forever sense.
After NASA changed their primary purpose to Muslim outreach (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/space/7875584/Barack-Obama-Nasa-must-try-to-make-Muslims-feel-good.html) during the Obama administration they also began outsourcing space exploration to private companies. Last year the two astronauts in question went to the ISS on a Boeing Starliner craft for an 8 or 9 day mission but then found they could not safely return on the same craft which later did successfully return home without them. Boeing then spent the next 8 or 9 months trying to correct the Starliner issues (and still working on it) while the astronauts were left aboard the ISS for an indeterminate time awaiting NASA's approval for a ride home once Boeing resolved their issues.
It became a political issue last year when Elon Musk advised the Biden administration that he could send a SpaceX rocket up to return them right away but was denied permission, many say for political reasons due to the administration's displeasure at Musk's stance on free speech and social media.
Once a new administration assumed office, SpaceX was authorized to send a rocket up to bring them home, 9 months after they arrived there and at a point where still no-one knows when Boeing might be able to send a safe craft up for them.
So, in my opinion they were very much stranded with no authorized means to return home in a timely manner during the vast majority of the time they spent on the ISS. Many people disagree with the "stranded" term because of fear the new administration may be seen as rescuing the astronauts while the old administration might be seen as not being able or willing to. Like most things in politics these days, it's silly.
I'm a bleeding heart liberal, and it seems to me they were stranded. And yes, if Musk had rescued them four months ago, he'd have been a hero.
I remember a story about where they worried that the female astronaut could not eat enough to sustain life so yes, they were stranded by any reasonable definition.

Thank you for confirming my thought that it did seem they were stranded. The media sources were trying hard to create an alternate universe. And they wonder why they are not doing well with people who have common sense.

okay-----stranded, with no way home. But yeah---this is why it is best ta stay home & look after your petts. Don't venture out after dark. See?
