Traffic on this site has fallen off precipitously. One theory is that we lack cat photos. If we don’t have images of our pet cats, why would anyone bother to come here? 5668 This is my effort to address that.

Here we have Madison, the red and white cat with her cat brother William Bill. These two cats are neither friends nor enemies. They usually ignore each other. Today they were sitting on the same little table, staring down at our dog who was wanting to hassle them.

I am waiting for that scam where someone will tell you that if you don't pay them a certain amount of money, they will post all your photos that you have on your phone. I'd tell them to go for it. 99% of them are of my cats.

Well, if this works, here are our two inside kitties - Wynkin (larger, male) and his much smaller sister, Nod. They are very close buddies, although Nod loves to set her brother up, and will come rat him out if he gets into something first.

Ironically I hadn't noticed this thread until today, our last day with our Freddy. She was 13-1/2. I took this photo of her this morning before taking her in to the vet. She was having a horrible morning of howling, pacing and throwing up, peeing different places. Then she seemed to want to go outdoors. She's always been an indoor cat, 100% of the time. So I thought, what the heck, let's go out. She lay in the sun, watched birds, breathed the sweet air. I miss her already. I keep thinking she's going to come tell me it's dinnertime, or I watch for her when I walk from room to room thinking she'll be there. I'll miss her rubs on my ear at night the most.

Here’s a ridiculous photo of my cat, now named William Bill, when he was a glamour Puss. This is a professional photo his former owner had taken of him. This is when he was on the show circuit.

but he doesn’t look much different from all of the other handsome, well fed, tabby cats in this thread.

Okay---you kids have some VERY impressive cats! Yup. But yeah--I was a disreputable cat breeder, producing unwanted Oops! Litters. I had a littlebitty gray breeding pair, and guess what? One of their offspring is a huge yellow bobcat, very good natured, too But not much like mom & dad. Figure that out.

Oh Kay, I am so sorry. Is she your only cat?

Yes, she was, Iris, and thank you to all of you for your condolences.

It's so strange here today without her. I keep listening for her, watching, forgetting momentarily she's not here anymore. It's remarkable what a disruption in the pattern of living the loss of a pet is. They really keep us on a routine, and now it just seems "off."

I miss her.

our orange and white cat is a tiny Persian, less than 5 pounds. She is the best cat in the world! She was born in Germany and ended up in Persian cat rescue at age 7. Most Persian cats are bigger, some much bigger.

our brown tabby cat is an American Shorthair, i.e, regular cat, who happens to be “ purebred” whatever that means. But 90% of street cats are American Shorthairs, so it has little meaning.

Okay---One way to combat the inevitable grief of pet loss is the multi-pet household, with cats of varying ages. I see people who can't cope with a new pet because one they have doesn't "like" the new one. Some people have high expecting of a VERY orderly life. But yeah--get together a cat family, and get used to it.

I like the cats, John.
I'm very curious about the stove. Can't remember every seeing one like it.

How does it work? It looks like you are drying towels in the right compartment. The door is partially open.

The heat, according to the kitten, seems to come from the left compartment.

It's a Portuguese stove made out of cast iron, very heavy, around 1350 pounds.

This stove doesn't need a lot of wood burning to conserve energy, it's stays cozy all through the day with minimal refill.

https://i.postimg.cc/VrXyqLpn/Imagem-Whats-App-2023-12-10-s-15-13-34-d78cc379.jpg (https://postimg.cc/VrXyqLpn)

On the left, you put wood, there are bricks on the sides and back, that is the 'agent' that allows energy conservation in the form of heat.

https://i.postimg.cc/XX7zvqJm/Imagem-Whats-App-2023-12-10-s-15-02-38-8a534794.jpg (https://postimg.cc/XX7zvqJm)

On the right, there's the oven, where you can make roasted food, like chicken, or a cake even.
As you might know, food cooked with wood, tastes very different, also takes longer to cook, though.

https://i.postimg.cc/TyLvPcck/Imagem-Whats-App-2023-12-10-s-15-13-34-241fc7f0.jpg (https://postimg.cc/TyLvPcck)

The reason the door was open is that I wasn't trying to rise the temperature to cook in the oven.
By opening the door, that heat conserved in the oven, could get out, and climatize the kitchen.

https://i.postimg.cc/ZWqhGmvz/Imagem-Whats-App-2023-12-10-s-15-13-33-82803ff8.jpg (https://postimg.cc/ZWqhGmvz)

On the top, there's the grill, where you can put pans, and cook.
On the left, where's the pot pan, the temperature is higher, it's right above the fire source.
There's also a bar, that allows you to put towels, or anything else to dry up.

John, thank you for the detailed information about that remarkable stove. It looks like it's in wonderful condition and clearly can serve a lot of purposes at once.

We heated with a wood stove for many years and I did some very simple cooking on the top of it. But your stove is unlike any I've seen in the houses I've visited. Very nice.

Simone
12-15-23, 9:42pm
I looked further, John, and see that stoves like yours are available here and may be popular with "off the grid" and other adventurous folks.

If when the sun rises, you get out the house and go to work, this kind of stoves will not be practical if you want to cook in them, you'll need to keep putting wood, and in Portugal, in the region I'm at, it's not cold enough to have this stove at high temperatures all thought out the day. In the Russian taiga, these stoves were and are still used, they heat a space like nothing I've ever experienced. I was raised with food from a stove like this, and I guess that's what made me buy one, they are quite expensive, but never die. If anyone in the US wants to buy something similar, there's these Spanish stoves here (https://www.woodcookstove.com/cast-iron-wood-cook-stove.html), free shipping in the US territory.

Simone
12-22-23, 9:04pm
John, that sounds exactly right. I spoke with a friend in her nineties who recalls her grandmother cooking on such a stove, well into the 1960's, on a farm in Italy. There was no running water, no indoor plumbing, but the house was warm and the meals were memorably good.

I enjoyed this conversation.

okay----posts & pics submitted to this thread of pett catts have fallen off precipitously. Yup. so, here's a random shot of mooomy(top) and two o' her offspring. Moomy looks the part of a grumpy cat & so do her girls. Moomy is not grumpy, but she has approach-avoidance disorder, which perhaps explains why she mighta been abandoned nearby a church cemetery I was passing on my bike. but yeah---a guy who was mowing suggested i take that cat home with mee, so i came back in my car for several days, trying to catch her. finally she showed up where i had left food out on prior days, and though i could not catch her, another neighbor nearby caught her for mee, and took moomy home. a couple days later, she had her kits. yup. here they are, almost ten years later.(see photo) i don't pick out my catts, they pick me. see?579157915791

okay--------those three catts love littlebittymee, even though they look grumpy. i don't torment them with baths & haircuts , either. no sireee. but yeah---i am working working, working almost 7 days a week until my outdoor catt yard is built and secure. so yeah----i don't have much time to explain myself. thatt tiny burg up north in the middle o' nowhere, where hogs in factory farms outnumber the human residents of the state 10 to one, has a rule that forbids more than 3 catts per household! they hve toomany rules there, to compensate for the otherwise bizarre culture, there. but yeah----take a look at this menu. yum---doncha wanna drive-n-eat in iwah? yup. thankk mee.57955795

okay----here's recent photo of the catt that was a littlebitty teeny-tiny skinny gray kitten living in my driveway/backyard for over a month, until she surrendered & I was able to catch her, several years ago. She's all grown up and kinda plump, now. plus--- spaded, although she'd be a great mommy and have nice kittys, like herself. but yeah---i call her mousey because she has a triangular face, like siamese, and is very agile, like a squirrel or a mouse. yup. thing is---she can get to the corners of a food can, and get the last bit. See? (see photo) hope that helps you kids some. enjoy the rest of your day. thankk mee. 58255825582558255825582558255825

Multiple instances of your daily photos un-necessarily takes up valuable server storage space. okay----gosh, alan, i'm sure sorry! i was not even aware of that! how much should i donate to the forum fund, in order to pay for the extra space taken by littlebitty mee? so, anyway---while we're on the subject, i would suggest that we also limit our posts on the topics of partisan politics and alphabet people, as well. they seem to be taking up a LOT of space, with participants chasing their tails, so to speak. sure hope it would not be an incovenience to anyone. but yeah---thankk mee and enjoy the rest of your day!

The text load on our server storage is very low, but uploaded files such as photos take their toll over time. We were on the cusp of running out of space a few years ago and purchased additional storage to ensure that everyone could continue to share photos as they wished, and you are welcome to continue to do so. Feel free to post 8 pictures of your cat or 4 photos of a residence of ghoulish interest to you or 5 photos of someone arrested in your town, I'm simply asking you to make each of them unique and stop posting the same photo multiple times. It's wasteful.

okay------too bad i don't have a photo to share o' this, but my ol' tomcat who is dark gray & quite chunky was pawing at a leftover piece of pizza crust that has ants crawling on it, as though he figured he may as well have a snack. so anyway, i didn't want him eating it, so i gently tried to pick him up but no---he grabbed onto the shelf and dug his claws into it. i gently pulled him away and set him down on the floor, but guess what? he jumped back up there & started pawing at the ants, again. but yeah---he was trying to manipulate me, as you know how catts can do. ha. well, this time i took him out in the kitchen and opened up a cann of catt yummies, which got his full attention. lots of people would deem him a no-good worthless catt, but i get my kicks keeping him around yup. he's a punkin' head. okay---i know you kids are VERY engrossed in discussing the next inevitable conflict in the VERY conflicted, so-called "middle east". o' course, the region is VERY tribalistic and has theocratic, authoritarian gummmints, plus a VERY controversial theocratic thorn-in-their-side neighbor assisted(coddled) by western powers. so, yeah---it's like one big football conference, there. ha. but yeah---who cares? forget the propaganda. don't sellem any more nukes; they might hurt themselves playing with them. so anyway---here's another cat photo, which is VERY relevant, to mee. yup. (see photo) i was gonna consult you kids on whether i should get rid of her---dump her off in front o' the annnimal shelter when it's closed, due ta the fact that she evidently mistook the "mouse" on my 'puter for fair game, and chewed through the wires. well, i managed to fix it with tape, so i'm up & online, again. but, i think i'll let Annie stay, anyway. yup.

They're not siblings... but we love tuxedo cats! The one in back is about 5 years old and is large, an American bobtail mix. He is just FULL of personality (his nickname is "Troublemaker")! The older cat, about 13 or 14, has the title "Nicest Kitty in the World." They were both rescues.

oky---i really like them two piebald catts. they are prolly in the top five of MY favorite kinda catts. unfortunately though, my last piebald kitty boy, Squeaky Toy, passed away prolly 5-6 years ago. i got him from a place that had a FREE KITTENS sign out front, not far BTW, from where the Blanchard Residence was. the lady there was out of kittens, but she gave me squeaky toy, who i think she wanted to get rid of. But yeah---Squeaky was very shy & kinda sickly. He finally did get pretty usta living here, and he was a very nice kitty boy. And then, back in the 80's, i had a piebald kitty boy that i picked up as an abandoned cat, and he was very personable, but it turned out he was infected with FIP, which wasn't good. Nope.

Did my shift at Marin Humane today. There's been a big girl (20 lbs), Kiera, there for a couple of months. About a month ago she got put into quarantine because she bit someone. The sign on her space after that said "staff only" I was sad for her because how could she get adopted if no one could go meet her. And in the several weeks I took care of her space before that I'd always found her to be a sweetie. The first time I met her I learned that she just wanted a brief moment of love. Five seconds and then she gave me a love bite and I knew to not push things as she rolled around on my feet. Today she was gone and a new group of sweeties were in her space. The animal care coordinator came to ask me to not move anything in one of the other spaces with several cats and I asked about Kiera. "She got adopted!" It turns out that the person she bit spent the last two weeks pondering adopting her and ultimately did so, saying "She was so adorable and now that I understand what matters to her I can work with that." My week was totally made with this news.

okay---the only reservations i would have about getting a cat that HUGE would be if she felt hungry and was sitting on a shelf high above you and jumped off on you to bring that fact to your attention---well, yikes! that could hurt! These three little girls, Toffee, Taffy, and Ribbon, are new arrivals i'd never met before. They are in one of the "townhouses". Basically 2x2 feet with four floors. Tiny. Especially for three young energetic girls. They had WRECKED their space. Knocked over the food and water bowls, all the bedding was in the bottom in a big pile, etc, because they are so playful. As soon as I opened the door to their space they all immediately jumped out into the shared area and started playing with all the toys, having the best time of their lives. After I finished cleaning up their mess I left them out to play and cleaned up a couple other spaces. Twenty minutes or so later I put them back in their space. Five minutes after that I took this picture. They had obviously worn themselves out because they were all about to fall asleep.

Oh so cute! It has always been incomprehensible to me that there are cats begging for homes. I would think it more reasonable that they would all be considered valuable treasures that one had to pay large sums of money for and be on a waiting list or something.

Here is our new addition. We adopted her from the local kitten rescue; she and her litter of 6 had been left out on a country road in a cardboard box. She is completely in charge of the house now. I have to keep an eye on her; she's a little thief! We're thinking of renaming her Snoopy because she is. She spends her waking hours seeing what she can get into and abscond with. The shelter (she'd been there 4 months; her kittens were all adopted) had named her Beauty Mama, but we just call her Booty (or Bootylicious or Girly).

Yeah, life's tough.

It’s fascinating getting to meet all the cats and learn their personalities and see their progression each week. Today there was an interesting new surrender. Mama Diamond. I don’t know if that was her name or if she got renamed when she arrived. She’s only been there a couple of days so she’s still adjusting to shelter life. But she was an emotional support animal to her prior human. She was totally comfortable with me (unusual with new adult arrivals) but not ready to play and just a little nervous generally. She’ll still be there next week but I expect her to be a lot more comfortable and doing a better job of charming everyone that interacts with her.

This week I got to actually see the little guy under the rug. I feel bad for them. He and his brother are super afraid of people. They both just sat, backs pressed against the wall, and quietly hissed at me the whole time I was in their space. Next week I may seek out one of the cat behaviorists to see if there’s anything I can do to help socialize them. They’re young enough (3 months) that there’s hope.

There are two other girls, misty and Mallory, that are a month older and are the complete opposite. They are ready for a PARTY! Two weeks now I’ve let them out of their tiny space to play in the communal area. Both weeks were 45 minutes of nonstop chasing each other and all the toys around. And both weeks when it was time for them to go back into their space they were fine with me scooping them up and putting them away.

Here they are just before I let them out. As soon as I walked in the communal space they were like "Is it play time????"

And then there's these girls. I call them Kiera 2.0 They look like her, and are almost as big as her (both just over 16 pounds). Thankfully they actually like getting love unlike Kiera. Unfortunately they are both 12 years old, so not as adoptable. They have been at the shelter for about 6 weeks now. And finally will let me pet them. The one on the right especially was purring like a chainsaw after a couple of minutes of me giving her love. I hope they can find a home that is low energy and fine with the fact that they will only be there for a few years. But those years will be all snuggles and no wild play time.

So we have begun the process of becoming a four cat household... Tuesday I took SO and dear MIL and dear SIL (who are in town for the week) to meet all the cuties that I take care of every Friday. I can't deny SO. (seriously, just look at his face...) And honestly these little girls are beyond adorable. But this will be the end. We're not going to take in any more. It will be much easier to just say to myself "You're adorable, but no. I can't take you home" anytime there are other sweeties at the shelter. Tomorrow after my shift I meet with the cat behaviorist to talk about whether any of them will likely have issues with a blended household. (Eleanor and Michelle came from the shelter so the behaviorists know them already) If there aren't issues we'll bring them home sometime next week after SO's mom and sister have gone back to St Louis.

This is splendid news!

you never know how they’re going to react. We had one cat who we took in when our neighbor was shot and killed, one of her dozen cats, and this cat had never been a single cat, never an only cat. She was great with humans and was a little attention whore. But with other cats, she was shocked that they existed. It seems as though every day when she met another cat in her own house, she was overwhelmed with surprise they lived on thiscearth.

Cats are so funny! Our current two cats are neither friends or enemies. They pretty much ignore each other.

Well, we ended up bringing the new ladies home friday. They had not been available for adoption because they just got spayed a week and a half ago. The shelter is packed with young cats so they couldn't hold them for us and we didn't want to risk someone else adopting them over the weekend. They have settled in just fine. Super loving and playful. They're ready to leave my office and explore the rest of the house. Our older kitties are not ready yet but after MIL and SIL leave tomorrow we'll begin the process of introducing them.

And they forced me to get around to a project that I'd been putting off the entire four years we've lived in this house. Organizing all the cables under my desk. The little girls love to chew on everything. Now they won't electrocute themselves!

Four cats is a LOT of cats. Bless you for taking them in.

My brother is a cat man and he and his wife have had four as many as four at one time, but now they’re down to one elderly cat and they say “no more. “ I don’t know how they can say that because I don’t want to be without a cat. I can be without a dog though.

We’ve had two periods of no cats. The first one our house at the time felt too quiet. I didn’t think I was ready for more but SO convinced me to meet the sweet sweet orange boys he’d already found and I was smitten. The second time I didn’t notice the quiet so much because the second orange kitty had to be put down a week before we moved to this house so there had never been cats here and we were busy with projects and such.

Now, though, I can’t imagine this house without the liveliness that comes from these four adorable ladies living here with us. The behaviorist at the shelter was a bit concerned about four women cats in one house but because it’s two and two they seem pretty balanced power-wise and are working towards a truce at least. We’ll probably make the kittens sleep in my office for the foreseeable future just to avoid any fights in the middle of the night.

That said, i realize they don't fit into everyones' agenda, especially what a qualified professional like Dr Grande would diagnose as grandiose & narcissistic, with obsessive-compulsive features. Or, something like that. But yeah---I see nothing wrong with having 4 catts, as long as you don't do things such as dress them up or trim their hair & whiskers & tails or bother them too much. Catts NEED their space, all there is to it. And don't be a fanatic about them walking on countertops and stuff like that. Hope that helps you kids some. Thankk mee.

In the 27 years I've been married, we've been catless for very brief amounts of time too. First cat pretty much came with the house. Obviously abandoned as she was fixed and in good shape. She passed of Cushing's Disease in October and by January, we had two kittens who my husband's coworker rescued and asked if we wanted. They passed Feb and May of 2020 and two weeks after the last one passed, we got two more kittens. okay----a thought occurred to me about how Mousy(who is like a squirrel) happened to be in my yard, two years ago. She is very friendly to me, now, but when she was at large in the yard, she was VERY afraid and even though I'd hear her mee-yowing help, help, help me, she would evade mee, and when she finally did approach to get fed, when I grabbed her to catch her and bring her in, she fought like a tiger--scratching and biting in earnest, and after I brought her inside, she hid and would only appear when being fed and it took several tries to pick her up, because she would panic & fight back, quite successfully. So you know what? I would guess that at one point early on, that she was a kitten tossed out in someone's yard, and got picked up by a predatory bird(hawk/owl/whatever), and she resisted like she did, and the bird dropped her from the air and maybe she fell into a tree which broke her fall, and she landed in my yard. The thought occurred to me the other day, while I was watching two hawks circling over a pasture/yard nearby. I just bet that'ss what happened. The guy at the machine shop told me that birds picked up feral kittens at his place in the country, and he'd seen it. <<<Wow. Ow. Yup.

It is official now - we have a cat because this cat chose us. Six weeks ago I gave what I thought was a stray feral cat some people tuna and now she's wormed her way into our hearts and home. It's a long story but she was actually our neighbor up our little road's cat because it was her brother's but the brother had to go away and left her two feral-ish cats in his wake but she couldn't let them inside because she already had a cat so her friend staying in his camper on her land started domesticating them but the one tiger kitty started appearing in our yard and little by little she started warming up to us because we gave her food consistantly and we began letting her into our house and she'd find places to nap and then she spent the night on the bed because it was so cold out and then I bought her toy mice to play with and we started talking to her and she'd hang out in the window sill by K's desk as he was working and the other day I finally bought a litter box because she's been spending every night inside our house and POOF! She is officially our cat as of yesterday when I ran into said neighbor at the Thanksgiving Dinner hosted by our local volunteer fire department and we decided that the cat chose us and the neighbor is grateful that she doesn't have to deal with an outdoor formally feral kitty anymore.

Proof positive that the Cat Distribution System works as intended. We never would have sat down and decided to go get a cat; cats decide these things for us...

I think tabbys are the most friendly and affectionate cats around - basically big floofballs that love everyone once they decide you're okay. My favorites are black & white tuxedo cats with goofy markings; they seem to have really distinct (and sometimes maddening) personalities. Black cats seem to be a mix. My last cat was a black cat and it took her a while to warm up to me but when she did, I was definitely her person.

Also, that green thing behind them is a counter that I built 50 years ago, and repainted this fall, with green over yellow with urethane clear. It is not professional-grade cabinetry, but it has served it's purpose. Most of the boards were purchased from the very first Payless Cashways lumber store, a defunct chain that quit business over 20 years ago. Yup. The catts have been busy, trying to mess it up, as always. Ahhh-summm & A-may-zeen, as they constantly & continuously say up in IWAH. Yup.

they are cute

I won “best in show” with a floral design based on my cat. I used flat Iris the color of my cat. She has a flat face

can you see the resemblance?

okay---tyvm, IL. but yeah--my fluffy tabby mommy catt came off a farm place where somebody dropped her off, and she desperately needed a home, because of their killer dog. she was nice but shy and pilling here was very(x4444) difficult. you'd pop a pill in her mouth and she could fling it across the room. for a littlebittykitty, she was strong. yup. i just lost her last kitten, a very mellow orange boy, about two months ago.
