View Full Version : Please Help Me Identify This Movie!
DH and I once caught part of a movie on TV and wanted to watch the rest. However, we don't know the name of it. DH thought it could be Hitch****, but I have read through the synopses of his films and can't seem to find it.
It was an older movie in black and white. It was about a couple of travelers on a train who get stuck somewhere (due to a blizzard, I think) and are forced to find lodging. The only opening available is in a hotel in the attic with the servants. Then all kinds of zaniness ensues.
Does this sound familiar to anyone??
Nope (although the reference to "with the servants" sounds British - do you know any of the stars?

I've seen that, but darn it, I can't remember the name. It's a pretty old movie, late '30s, early 40's, I think. My first instinct was Strangers on a Train but I IMBD'd that and that's definitely not it. Argh. Now this is going to bug me. It's a cute, funny movie, and one of those that's fun to watch because some of the humor seems really fresh, even though plenty of movies have come after it and copied its style.
I will keep thinking,
Kara
Yes, I remember watching it, the whole thing, but I don't recall the name of the movie. If my recollection serves me clearly, I would start my search with Agatha Christie and Miss Marples movies and the likes of PBS murder/mystery specials.
Thanks, everyone, for your replies! This has been driving us crazy for awhile now! It seems like everyone has seen it, but no one quite remembers what it was called :laff:
@ Zig--Unfortunately, I do not recall who was in it. I'm not sure that "servant" was the word used in the movie, either. It might have been "staff"??
@treehugger--You are right--it's not Strangers on a Train (though that is a good one!). This one is a little more silly and zany...it's a fun watch!
@Mrs. M--I never thought to check out PBS/Agatha Christie movies. I'll give that a shot!
It Happened One Night (1934 (http://www.imdb.com/year/1934/)) but no servant just auto court?
Thank you for the suggestion, Brian. I've seen "It Happened One Night," and while it is a fun movie, it isn't the one I'm thinking of.
I don't know if this helps any, but DH said today that he thought the travelers were moving through Europe and got stuck in the Alps. He said they stayed with the servants in a ski lodge, not a hotel.
Hmmm...this is making me kind of crazy! >8)

Yes, I remember the Alpine setting, too. But still the title is not coming to me. This is the kind of thing that often pops into my suddenly wide-awake brain at 3 in the morning...but that hasn't happened yet with your movie, sorry!

Could it be The Lady Vanishes?
Could it be The Lady Vanishes?
YES!!! Thank you, Daisy! We watched it last night. Turns out the only part I saw was the beginning, which takes place in the hotel. When I read the plot summary of that movie online, it seemed like it took place on a train, so I didn't think that was it. But it was!
Ah, what a great movie!
Thanks so much, everyone, for your help! DH and I appreciate it!

Well, The Lady Vanishes isn't the movie I thought you were talking about, but it's a good one, that's for sure. Glad your mystery (about your mystery movie) is solved!
Kara
@Kara--it isn't the movie I thought I was talking about, either. LOL But it turned out to be the right one. It is a good movie--a fun blend of drama and comedy. DH was so happy to finally be able to watch it, too. Let me know if you come up with the name of the movie you were thinking of--sounds like something I'd love to see! :-)

OK, that's funny. But I totally know what you mean.
I love movies!

Hmmm.... not sure The Lady Vanishes is the same movie I'm thinking about, but so glad Daisy pulled out the ace! :)
