View Full Version : Are You On The List?
Of folks the government is keeping an eye on? My wife has family in Pakistan, in Peshawar no less. We call/email/skype regularly to keep up with them. I'm pretty sure calls from that country code landed us on a few agency watch lists. Combine that with me buying a copy of the Anarchist's Cookbook from Amazon a few years back and we're terrorists waiting to happen.
For the record, we have a fairly large collection of cookbooks on shelves in the kitchen. I bought the Anarchist's Cookbook to slip into the mix as a gag (I am not currently planning to blow anything up). A few people noticed. A few less actually knew what it was. They are probably on lists, too.
No idea. One can find out some info on oneself via FOII petitions.

You know the joke about going to hell for the company - it's where all the interesting people are. Well I don't know about that one, but I often think it's the case with the lists of people the government is keeping an eye on. The best people are probably on the list, it's good company. Yes many are no doubt on the list for nothing more than the crime of existing while being Muslim. Even an ocassional real terrorist might windup on the list by accident :~) But what do you want to bet nearly every protestor is on that list (IOW everyone who gives a darn about the crimes of our age and is finally driven to actually do something about it), every real community builder and organizer (I definitely don't mean Obama) - anyone who isn't in other words entirely apathetic about what is happening in the larger world. I doubt I've made it to the list yet (unless they're going after real small scale stuff) but if I did I believe I would be in real good company.
I always figured my family was on the list in the sixties/seventies as we were participating in peace rallies, etc. There used to be agents of some kind posted on rooftops taking pictures at every event. And at least one of my relatives is an avid reader of the Anarchist's Cookbook for no reason other than to twit authority.

Anarchists cookbook and all, I recently met a relative I never had before, anarchist cookbook was on the shelves. Really, who doesn't own a copy? :)
They have a special list to keep track of which lists I'm on.

Ha! We have joked for years in our family about "being on the list." My oldest brother had an article he wrote quoted on Al Jazeera's website. So yeah, our family is on the list.

No. Wish I were. Except I'd probably have my Expedited TSA status taken away, so, on second thought...

Given many of my views and stances, I am sure I am on some list somewhere.
I have a story about this I find relevant to the times. Back in 2010 I was waiting tables at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and I got into a discussion about what was wrong with health care in the US. Big mistake even though it was off the clock. One of the women involved in this discussion called me a "terrorist" as I believe in universal health care and told me that her boyfriend worked in Homeland Security down in Tucson and she was going to have me put on the Do Not Fly List. I went to management with this and luckily I was liked by the managers that year and the woman in question was perched at a place right before getting fired. She did something very minor soon thereafter and did get fired. This was about two weeks before I was to catch a flight from Las Vegas back home to Phoenix. I was very very very apprehensive about going to the airport but I figured, well, whatever, worst case scenario is I have to take a Mexican bus line back to Phoenix, no big deal. So I went to the airport and went through security and apparently could still fly. And have flown a few times since then without problems. So I'm hoping there is some realistic and sane oversight of who gets on these lists and why there are placed there? Rob
I'm not sure why they'd have any concern about me though....

I wanna party with your crowd!

Highly doubtful since my sister, who works security for a aero space military defense contractor and lives with me, just had all her very high security clearance renewed - which involved looking into my backgroud and finances and interviewing many of my friends and former aquantinances and neighbors as well as her own. They wouldn't clear her if I was on some watch list. However, years ago when I was a criminal justice major I did a report on white supremist groups connection to international drug trade and signed up for all kinds of stuff from various groups - including the KKK's monthly newsletter (called the White Knight I believe). That along with a subscription to Soldier of Fortune magazine my dh got me as a joke, a copy of the Anarctist cookbook, and many other similiar publications I used for research, I might have made a list or two. But again I don't think so because when I applied for federal law enforcement jobs after I graduated I was able to get thru all the background checks.

That's probably a good way to get onto a few lists.

Could you request one for me? As a liberal, you have a 92% chance of getting it for free where I, as a conservative, have a 73% chance of having to pay for it.

LOL! Sure, but my fee is a lot higher than theirs is.

Which is why I am saving my FOIA request for after I retire.
I've always assumed I have a large file on me in both the US and China. Now I wonder which one is larger.
I'm not that interesting, so I assume I'm not on any lists.
I'm on DHS' list, but because of my customs broker license and the background check I had to go through.

Don't forget Tradd, us gun owners are probably on a list or 2 or 3 :-)
I'd think the list of people who aren't on any other list would be interesting....

They might begin to question if they actually exist at all. If a tree falls in the forest ...

In 9th grade, when the internet was brand new I printed off pages of the anarchist cookbook and sold them to other kids on the bus.
Senior year an army recruiter called me several times and so told them I was a communist.
Since then I have been a pretty inconspicious, law abiding citizen. I worked for a bank so my fingerprints are on file somewhere.
DH's name is on the terrorist watch list. It is a horribly common anglo name....website estimates there are 3,491 people in the U.S. with the name. I pity the folks who have to try to keep track of that terrorist. We are always questioned and it takes forever unless DH puts in his passport number in advance. One time they even knew where he worked "You're the John Smith that works at XX Corp, correct?" when he came back for questioning. It is really a little scary.
