My house in SC sold yesterday, closed, money in bank. What a relief. It is considered a dumb move to buy first and sell second, but that is what we did. Both houses were bought as foreclosures. We sold SC at a slight loss when you consider what we put into it, but not much, and we lived there for 3 years with a wonderful fenced in yard for dogs, 10 minutes from the ocean, 400 dollar a year property taxes--anyway, it was a great house, but it was time to sell and move due to DH's desire to get back up north (and his worldclass allergic reactions to bug bites, which led to 3 ER visits and blood poisoning. He is NOT a Southerner, unfortunately.) When you consider what rental would have been for similar set up, we probably saved $20,000.

What a relief. I dislike owning property at a distance, although I would consider it again for a rental, not that far, though.

Market seems fine--but we are definitely bottom feeders when it comes to houses--each one gets cheaper. A lot to be said for buying small and paying cash. But we had 2 offers by 5th day on market, then accepted one, but she couldn't get her financing, and then that fell through and 2 more offers--one from the original person who offered without actually being in the house--saw it on the net.

Am truly sad not to live in SC anymore--the people are lovely and it was a much more diverse area than here, with history and awesome winters, but bloom where you're planted, huh?

I am glad for you that the weight is off of you. Do I remember correctly that you moved to Michigan?

That's right, Fidgie, northern Michigan. It is very pretty up here, and we've had snow twice.
One problem with the SC house was the FEMA was redoing the flood zone maps, and it was supposed to make the flood insurance (hurricanes) go up. I did not want to own it without insurance, at a distance, but did not want to end up paying a few hundred dollars a month in house insurance; my budget's too tight.

Sounds as though you were money ahead overall so well done for having a place to live and selling in a fairly tough market.

Thanks, Razz, I think the days of making money on housing may be coming back, but we are not there yet, and I am still of the "count yourself lucky if you break even" school, and this was definitely cheaper than renting for 3 years.

Yay! One less worry to interfere with the pleasure of snow.

Thanks, guys! Jilly, I like snow to look at, just don';t like driving in it. But it is beautiful. . .
