View Full Version : Pine needle and cones as mulch

I have an abundance of pine needles, and I can't believe that only just discovered that they make a really good mulch for roses. And pine cones keep the dogs away from plants (perfect for around the herb garden.)

I've been doing landscaping this year and the layer of pine needles and pine cones is going to be a nice finishing touch, especially under the roses I'm putting in all along our fence.

I read that in some places people pay money for pine needles (or pine straw, as it is sometimes called.) I could make a mint!
Does anyone else use pine needles or cones in the garden?

This is kind of the look I'm shooting for:

People in SC use pinestraw all the time. I had so many pine trees I did not need to buy it. The cones are so cool looking.
I always thought the pinestraw made things acidic, but that's not a problem if you are trying to discourage grass.

rodeosweetheart - It does create some acidity, but they break down slowly, and most of my plants like a little more acid anyhow. I definitely want to discourage weedy grass - it seems to grow everywhere but in the little lawn where I want it!

Funny, I just noticed the cat in that photo...

I use pine needles to mulch asparagus and garlic... in different beds, mind you.
