I always wonder how they determine this.
I think if you ask Americans if they're happy they'll say "Hell, no. Got to work, pay taxes, grumble grumble."
Some countries, people are not going to admit that they're dissatisfied; it's just not part of the culture to complain.
Americans seem to have super high expectations and no shame about whining - but I'm not sure that makes us unhappier?

Not a lot of analysis, but I've heard some of this before. I thought the low wage gap had something to do with it in some of the Scandinavian countries...

The one thing that I always think is interesting is that overall the economic portion of the survey seems to matter less than other social categories. Obviously that could simply be skewed by the questions, but it does seem to be a trend. I don't think the US is an unhappy place, but I do think we get a little more obsessed with money than we need to. I've also found that I have the ability to make myself miserable or to increase my own relative happiness pretty much regardless of what is happening on a national scale.
